You CAN'T knee/kick your opponent in the face when they're down, but you CAN knee/kick to the face when opponent is standing. Knees/kicks to the body are ok when your opponent is down.

Cris Cyborg is an example that If you dominate the fundamentals of muay thai you can be a really good and consistent fighter. No spinning kicks or fancy moves.
