The dogs we leave behind

  • "Did you rescue this other dog?" - it's one of the most common comments in rescue videos, where it's obvious that apart from the dog we actually rescued, there were two, three, ten more strays around. The answer is always no. No because of all the reasons mentioned in the video. Unfortunately this is the ugly truth. Healthy, friendly, young strays get left behind all the time, because they are not sick, they are not hurt, they are not pregnant or desperate. I hope this video clarifies some things about animal welfare here. We do our best, but it's never enough.

Thank you so much for explaing the situation in your country, Valia. I wonder if you together with the biggest rescue organisations in Greece, have ever tried to convince a well known celebrity (actor/actress, singer, politician whatever) to speak up for the Greek strays. Normally people are far more willing to listen to someone famous. If you or any other volunteer would like me to assist you with this idea I'd gladly write to any person you name, asking for help and/or helpful advices. All you need to do is get in touch with me.

Valia, you are the best advocate these animals have and I know that you are doing all that you can to help them. Things are definitely better here in the US but we still have way too many strays, abused, forgotten animals. I live in an area of the US where everyone has farms and they have a lot of dogs, cats, horses, goats, etc and many are not treated very well. They are treated as expendable and as objects and not sentient beings. Too often the go through life overlooked, without a caring touch or consideration. When they are too old to be used anymore they are put down or dropped off just as in Greece. I fell that regardless of country, the world feels doomed if we treat those that cannot care for themselves, so carelessly. If we can't find love and compassion in our hearts for these animals then what hope have we. I do not live close to any rescues, shelters or other devoted organizations but I know they exist here in the US and I know that we do have laws in place to hopefully curtain this behavior but in reality, when someone is running a dog fighting ring, they get a fine, a slap on the wrist and maybe a few months in community service or jail. Nothing will change until enough people step up and demand change. I send what money I can to the nearest shelter and I support their thrift store with purchases and donations. It is not a lot but I feel like very bit helps. These people with millions of dollars, sport figures, actors, etc. I would like to see more of them step up and not just fund support but take a stand. Thank you for this video and I can tell it was hard to film as you are feeling that others are judging you and finding you wanting because you were forced to leave a stray behind. Please know that we do not feel that way. We ask because we want to feel a part of it and we hope that they were saved but we know that you and countless others like you, are doing your very best. I follow several animal aid videos and believe me, you can tell the ones that are in it for the money and not for the animals. Have no doubt that we know where your heart is. Thank you a million times over for all that you do.

    • @curiouskitteh8215
      @curiouskitteh8215 5 років тому

Jason Weber it depends on the area. In Detroit, they run in packs and love in abandoned buildings. I’m south of you in CA and don’t see strays here either. Just one, who I slept with in my garage for a few days until I could adopt him out to someone. He was a beautiful rottie someone abandoned at the high school. I’ll never do that again (adopt to a stranger)... this was before I knew that dog fighting rings use craigslist to find bait dogs. I feel regret and anxiety now every time I think about that little peanut, but I pray that was a remote possibility. I’ve been late for work more than once picking up animals on the street who had collars and making sure they got back to their owners. Here in America the problem seems much more abuse, neglect, abandonment to kill shelters, and dog fighting. I network with people trying to rescue dogs from kill shelters and an overwhelming number of once-loved pets are killed daily.

Jason Weber it’s horrifying to think of the terror and abuse bait dogs suffer. Our anti cruelty laws should be as tough as murder laws, I really don’t understand why our “civilized” society fails in this way.

@@curiouskitteh8215 They should be much worse than our murder laws, killing anything innocent like a cat or dog, my god. It just makes me wonder how cruel people can be, like seriously. Though thankfully it is a small minority of people, or at least I hope it is, that do these things. The only good thing is that when they go to prison, the other prisoners will hate them so much that they'll kill the person who did that. Happens a lot in a state prison called San Quentin in Marin County, California. I live about twenty miles from it.

Simply neutering will just curb their population ....Many places adopt mass-culling to wipe out the population of strays .Such a cruel-devilish thing to do ...People will have to be more sensitive and make the connection that they too r living beings with loving heart and soul better than ours .. @@Iron2017 This is a bit risky. If a dog finds a home while on the street, we can't always it safe and healthy until it's actually physically rehomed. This means that the charities might lose credibility. Rehoming is a long procedure, and if during that period the animal is hurt, lost or dies, then adopters lose trust in the organizations. It's like trying to "sell" something that you don't have. That sounded wrong but you know what I mean.

How come the UK doesn't have this many strays?
This is only my opinion. I have only seen 1 stray in my life. My biggest regret will always be that I didn't actually take the dog to an animal charity or vet.
It was early morning, I was in the car and I had my cat with me in the car.
I got home, brought my car in with me, called the animal charity and they said they don't rescue stray dogs (WTF?)

Whether the younger ones were barking because the older ones were sick, I couldn't get close enough to find out. Another dog that I saw in Athens, he seemed to have made Athens his own. He was prospering and energetic. He looked like the dog that was at the front of the Greek protests in Athens.

longgowhereto, the last time I looked at Santorini, men from Bulgaria were carrying the luggage up. I'd tell the tourists to carry their own luggage in Santorini. Also the Greeks are defending their donkeys, they're now saying 'fat' people can't ride the donkeys. LOL There is a rescue for donkeys on Crete, I must admit I do have an strong affection for horses, donkeys and dogs.

@@eliakimjosephsophia4542 The donkey Sanctuary (England) I think has a program for donkeys there. I saw that in Turkey they have a lot of stray cats and dogs. They have programs to neuter, spay and vaccinate them then put a chip in their ear to identify the ones done. They have some places feeding stations for them - a big tall container on the street where food comes out at the bottom and the cats and dogs feed themselves and there are donation boxes above where you can donate for the food. One place in a video the town had put 2 rows of little colourful kennels for the ferile cats and a food and water station. I'm sure there are many there also starving and ill, stray and dumped animals, but they seem to like their dogs and cats and have this program for dealing with them.

She has no space for every Dog takes the sick, injured, pregnant and stray puppies. She would live to rescue them all, but their are literally MILLIONS if stray Dogs in Greece. Do you understand now why she can't rescue them all? Does the people in your country rescue every stray Dog? Maybee they just leave them to starve to death?

Italians, Greeks and in many European countries the people are suffering, what can they do, some people can't even afford to feed themselves let alone a dog Annalaura Tau. I remember in the 80s when I went to a rescue home to get an old English sheepdog. The rescue home owner, said that the dog had been in a home with six children, and they couldn't afford to feed their own family, let alone the dog. The old English sheepdog, was so underfed under her coat. Her coat was matted, and she had clearly been beaten and shouted out. It took me months to get her back in shape and really healthy again, she was so adorable and confident again once she was loved.

I'm not rich myself but with my partner we rescued several animals of different sizes and species and I just prefer not to eat than starve my babies or let them get sick. If one loves animals they can always find a way to raise money for them, because they are like children and they are part of the family. The food for just one dog can always be found, unless one does think that the dog is not worth being fed, which is outrageous to me. People are just good at making up all kinds of excuses to hide the fact that they are selfish and without any empathy for the weakest.

Valia, I've watched I think almost every video you've posted. Some how I understood what had to happen, as sad as it is, sometimes you must triage the most needy. In many ways I admire the no kill laws in Greece, in others I can't bring myself to think about the idea of kill shelters, we have them here. The animals know when they are being euthanized, they cry when they go into that room in the shelters here. Adoption is always the best way, however there are more animals then homes. Thank you for being so dedicated to saving those that need it the very most. Sending all of the volunteers and you my admiration and appreciation. Best wishes and as always all my love~D

This is a very informative video and I checked out the charities you linked to. It will be hard to chose between them, they sound amazing. I would love a video with your good insight about any legal avenues that might be a possibility in Greece. In US Ive been surprised how many new laws we’ve been able to get on the books in the last few years. Maybe in Greece, some anti-cruelty laws towards strays and making it illegal to abandon puppies, and a public program to dramatically reduce strays within 10 years by continually spaying and neutering them. I would love to hear your thoughts on challenges and possibilities and what we could do to help from other nations.

Thank you for your explanation. I understand your priorities concerning which dogs/cats to rescue. It's hard for me to reconcile this situation as when I lived in Greece some decades ago, abandoned dogs was nor the norm. I was always shocked by the numbers of them on Greek islands but in Athens it was not such a noticeable problem. What happened? Does Greece have laws which safeguard animals? In which case why aren't funds allocated to curb this problem? Is there any help from the EU? If not,why not? Sorry to bombard you with these comments and questions but the video seemed more like a developing country situation rather than an EU state. I know Greece has been facing awful austerity measures in the last years but many street dogs/cats are abandoned by people for other reasons. Sometimes this comes from attitude or cultural ideas, i.e. it's OK to dump puppies /kittens... Greek people are loving and caring but when it comes to animals, maybe not caring enough.
