I'm not normally a fan of the bass clarinet as it can sound horrible in the wrong hands but Bob Mintzer really knows how to give the instrument a real muscular and amblified sound almost like the EWI when he plays it. The sound he creates on this piece is very aggressive and at times has a very dark brooding mood but that's what sets him apart from other sax players, he is able to play the bass clarinet as a lead instrument but without it being too overpowering plus i love the way Ferrante, Haslip and Kennedy are able to play & follow his lead while keeping the music flowing but without getting lost in the mix.
Agree completely. I'm unfortunately not a musician, just a discerning listener, and any form of saxophone can be unbearable if used incorrectly. But Bob Mintzer is one of the masters who brings out the very best of the family of instruments. Couldn't imagine enjoying the EWI until I heard Bob on Yellowjackets Live Wires...
They just continue to compose tune after great tune, no matter what combination of band members are on the tune. Thanks for another great "YJ" tune. Your jazz/fusion tastes are pretty well aligned with mine. As always, Will is right there. Sweet footwork, especially in the intro. And the little 'less is more' type things he does, like that one offbeat hit of the snare at 2:31. I guess you've heard by now that he's back with the band. Really looking forward to catching them live this year!
Absolutely high level, oh yes a very dark sound. Wish I could have you guys playing in my club in Curacao, at least once. Maybe the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival people will do a concert with the Yellow Jackets on their 2016 Festival.
Great tune. The Yellowjackets are the epitome of this brand of subtle, precise yet flowing musical intensity. The way they divide 6/8 is one of their greatest rhythmic signatures, I think in large part due to Will's metric mastery. Also the marriage of dark and light in their music creates something that is always ultimately realistic and redeeming. YJs have always been one of the most upbeat and positive music organizations in modern jazz without being Pollyannaish. If you want t hear dark and menacing, with no redemption, listen to Steve Coleman.
I think this one was written by Will Kennedy which is why it sounds so propulsive. . He produces a gem every so often. Check out Capetown from the YJ 'Blue Hats' album.
'Jackets should work some of these classics (from "One Music") into their live acts. It was after all a 100% Yellowjackets record. and in my opinion one of their very best..
This was unofficially the 1st Yellowjackets recording with this classic lineup. Bob became an actual band member afterwards.
. . . I just love the mood of this tune.it is so driven.
would love to be front row in a small club and hear this LIVE.

rembeadgc: Thoughtful, reasoned and informative. Great bands attract great comments.
Will Kennedy back in the drummer seat is the saving grace for this group of musical Mad Scientists!!!
