Can’t wait to hear about your experience on ANA. When I lived in NYC I flew ANA exclusively to Asia, and it was great especially on their new, upgraded Business and First products. They’re old business product which can still be found on the 787 is great too. Now I’m on the west coast I’ve switched to One World because I fly Alaska a lot and haven’t tried JAL yet. I’m looking forward to flying it on my next trip to Japan. Thanks for the preview.
I too am excited for ANA. They just brought “The Room” to SFO and if I am able to find any sort of good mile redemption, you can bet on it that I’ll be there!
I just discovered the The Ones series and am enjoying it. Japan Airlines used to operate round the world flights in late 1960's to early 19070's. The westbound flight was JL1 and the eastbound flights was JL2. The JL1 today for SFO-HND is what's left of it. I remember there was another JL1 from NRT-HKG back in early 1980's, which I assume to be the continuation of the JL1 SFO-NRT flight.
@@PatrickSheaAviation Wikipedia had more info. San Francisco was JAL's first international destination via HNL in 1954 on DC-6; therefore, the JL1/2 designation for the SFO - TYO route stuck. In 1967, they negotiated the fifth freedom rights with the US to fly transatlantic and operated TYO-SFO-JFK-LHR and onto Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Cairo, Tehran, New Delhi, Bangkok, Hong Kong and back to Tokyo. It was the third airline to fly RTW after Pan Am and BOAC. It must have been quite a journey on the DC-8.
Love it man, trying JAL first class on a 777 on "the one" flight number early next year, have you had a chance to try their first class on the 777? Heard it's great but not as good as first class on their A350.
food!!! ... foood!!!.. and the alcohol in the lounge.... the equipment is mostly the same but food and FA service is usually what changes....nice shots of the food but a lil more explanation would be appreciated..🙂.. you have to enjoy the whole experience for those of us who are living vicariously through these vidzzz!!!... thank you for sharing the experience..
Thanks for the comments! I always love chronically the journey from start to finish since that’s what I always looked for in videos before starting my own channel
Beats that Zip Air trip you did recently to SJC. I agree with you on the 2-2-2 layout...I'm definitely not a fan, even if the window seat has direct aisle access. 1-2-1 is the way to go.
It was interesting to see the Zipair/JAL comparison considering JAL is a parent company of Zipair. Basic budget airline vs. luxury airline on almost the same route
Flown JAL business many times to Tokyo. I found the staggered layout, the seats a bit narrow and space between the next seat getting to the aisle. Otherwise it was a pleasant trip.
You video is the best I seen on Jal 787. Thank you! I do have a question. I’m flying Jal business soon out of sfo. Since I don’t have status with jal, I can’t select window yet. Would you think aisle is better or middle? Thank you.
I liked the window seat. I think it’s more private of a space, even if it is a bit more narrow. I don’t have status with them either, so you should be all good!
You should have MNL bound passengers on JL1/2 via HND this is their alternative option to PR105/115. Oneworld Alliance wise JL is 5 Star Skytrax rated like partners CX and QR. Same thing with competitor Star Alliance NH being 5 star like OZ BR and SQ. Both JL and NH beat AA and UA in terms of Service. I'm wondering if you used AA Advantage here or not? Since Saphire tier gives you access to JL lounges
SEA is my home airport where both ANA and JAL serve Tokyo-NRT. Beginning 26 March 23, ANA will commence Tokyo-HND and discontinue Tokyo-NRT. As a business traveler, I choose the carrier that has availability. I enjoy the flight attendants authenticity of both carriers. By this I mean flight attendants do not look at passengers and automatically speak english based on outward appearance of each passenger. It's been my experience that flight attendants speak japanese and pause for a response by the passenger. By doing so, the passenger decides the preferred language of communication. Where overall service and brand are concerned, both carriers are equally superior. No complaints. I do enjoy the layout of JAL's business class. And I did laugh at your remark that the tv is in another zip code. ANA may be my first choice beginning 26 March 23 because HND is closer to downtown Tokyo, but I am unopposed to JAL and NRT.
I loved flying ANA, but it doesn’t appear that they’ve been focusing on connecting flights to the rest of Asia (at least from the U.S.) as much as JAL has. A lot of flights to Haneda now and still require an overnight. I think they may still be normalizing their operations after the pandemic. For that reason I’ll miss my diamond status on ANA. Haven’t flown JAL, but I think ANA hard and soft products in the air and on land may be a tad better based on a lot of videos I’ve watched.
San Jose is ANA too. TBF SFO isn't really a hub for any oneworld carrier so them operating their own lounge here should be a bonus in itself. Definitely fly into Haneda if your end destination is Tokyo.
When you see Bayfront Park from your seat in the airplane, do you reminisce your family visits? Also, did your childhood family visits to Bayfront Park have any influence on your enthusiasm for air travel and aviation in general?
@@PatrickSheaAviation they have been operating domestic ones irregularly(not sure about the flight number back then) but still their first 001 was bound for SF via Honolulu. Having 001 destination usally means that a country’s economy is largely dependent on the country, at which the destination is located, for those in East Asia, unlike those with longer history of aviation such as US, GB, Germany.
Enjoyed your video, succinct and to the point with nice emphasis on food presentation. Laughed at your comment on Japanese over doing the peppers 😄😄 I can attest peppers are not a stable of Japanese food. But since their culture is into aesthetics and presentation, the flight attendants must've gone over on the red peppers, Ha Ha !
You from NY? Something tells me you hang out in NY alot or have a humble upbringing. Like your sensible mature to flying is why I subbed. You don't come off as pretentious or stuck up. Your a cool dude, I see your videos say & exactly me too allt 😂
SF born and raised. Although my first ever business class cabin wasn’t even a full year ago. So I guess you could say I’m new to this whole luxury thing 😂
Yea group one is for OneWorld emeralds and the JAL equivalent. I love your work. Thank you creating these. Did you know they have mattress pads too? They are quite nice. Their entertainment isn’t great. I was laughing watching your video because when I flew JAL in September and November last year they played some of the same movies.
I didn’t know about the mattress pads. I’m curious why the crew didn’t mention anything when I was struggling to make the bed. Maybe next time I’ll give them a try. I also found the entertainment selection odd, so it’s worrisome to know it’s been that way for a while. Glad you liked the video! Thank you!
It’s all about miles. I use work trips and credit cards to build miles and then spend loads of time finding the perfect city pairings to get the best deals
When your gonna fly Japan airlines, 1st Airbus A350-1000's 1st class to JFK? You should be Japan airlines 1st inaugural Airbus A350-1000 flight to JFK in 2024.
They do have a second style of business class that resembles the more normal “Herringbone” style setup. This isn’t for everyone, but I do prefer it over the 2-2-2 setup that you see in most airlines, considering it has some privacy (although they sacrifice seat width)
The JAL business class seats resemble those capsule hotel rooms; it looks entirely claustrophobic. I wish you had commented on the relative space and shown your body inserted into that narrow looking seat. Really, based on this video alone, I can't see choosing JAL when there are so many better business class options. The ANA business class seat can fit two people side-by-side. I like JAL's premium economy seat, but I just can't see paying more for this coffin-like arrangement.
JAL has a great service, but yes, admittedly the seat is very narrow. I could never justify the cost, but British Airways Avios points go a long way towards getting this ticket
I actually enjoy Patrick's voice. He has a soothing voice that in my opinion is good for his audio recordings! Thanks Pat! Keep the videos coming!
Thanks!
Yeah much nicer than the winging Non Stop Dan
Yeah he has an amazing voice hey.....
Im flying with Japan airlines in April business class from SFO to NRT definitely really looking forward to this flight love flying with Japan airlines
That’ll be awesome. Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you! I appreciate it!
Amazing videos… you deserve a lot more followers.
I appreciate it! Thank you!
Just stumbled upon this video. What a great series! Keep em coming! Happy travels! 🎉🎉🎉
Miss the long distance JL flights. Best food in the sky! ❤
Thank you! I’m glad you like it! The food was WONDERFUL

I Have Not Try Out JAL Business Class Yet.Great Work
Thank you!

great silhouette of Mt Fuji on the horizon as dusk turns to night

I wish my flight were on these Apex seats. My KIX-LAX flight next year will be the reverse herringbone. Alas, maybe next time.
I do like the privacy of the Apex Suites, but they are narrow for sure

06:18 - JAL FF Platinum gets same status as FC and Group 1.
I've recently subscribed to your channel, Patrick, and love it..! For your 'Ones' series, is TK1, Istanbul-JFK on the list...?
They’re all on the list, it’s just about when I can find a good fare to go and try them out
I love how you don't have to disturb your neighbor getting in and out of your seat on a flight.

Historically that was the first route of Japan Airlines, hence 001.
