I am glad to see you call out the built in prefilter! I’ve never seen a review of this product mention the reason I bought this over all other options, which is the placement of where water exits the bag. Most other dirty water bags flow out of the lowest point, sending any particulates, silt, etc., into your filter. This MSR bag allows particulates to settle and draws cleaner water from above, extending the useful life if the filter. This was a critical feature for me. I’ve been able to get good clean water out of “chocolate milk” and haven’t yet needed to replace the filter. MSR absolutely nailed it with this product!

I was wondering why it was located slightly above the bottom. Thanks for the insight!

Can you show, in detail, how you prime and also how you backflush? From your description it sounds like the same process. I just bought one and we had trouble with air in the lines, restricting waterflow. Also, mine leaked from the very first time we used it. Seam at the black base to the clear vinyl. Mostly stopped it with some pine sap. And they have a good return policy.

We could do a short video on this in the future. For now, priming and back flushing are basically the same. Attach a clean water bottle/bag to the outlet, remove the tube from the bag, and turn it all upside down so the clean water flows backwards through the filter. To prime let it flow until all the air is out of the tubing, then reconnect to the bag. To back flush, put 1L of water through the filter backwards to clean it out. The leak you had at the filter is definitely a defect, there shouldn't be water leaking from there. Also if there's a leak it's going to impact how well the siphon works.

I’ve had similar experiences regarding air in the lines, and it flows slowly until the filter is saturated. I usually leave the hose connected to the bag when back flushing (to prime or at the end of a bag), just hold my clean water higher than the dirty. There’s always some air that gets trapped by the prefilter which flows down to the filter and slows things a little. I’ll have to try back flushing with the hose disconnected and see if that helps.
Great thinking with the pine sap! Hopefully they took care of you with a new filter.

The "easiest way" to start filtering water is to use a bottle with clean water.....what if you don't have clean water to prime the tube/filter?

It's possible its just a bit more work. I would pop the filter off the dirty water side of the tubing and allow the line to fill completely with water, then re-attach the filter. That should provide enough suction to start a syphon. It will be slow until you are able to get all the air out of the lines.
