So I bought 4 multi-mode Cisco compatible SFP's from FS.com along with multi-mode fiber (2 meters), in my previous post to you I talked about using the enable unsupported-transceiver. After connecting everything up I didn't have to use this command, these SFP's work without a hitch. However I had to group both SFP's on both switches in order for them to both work together as uplinks. By default you can only one to a switch. I can send you the command for that if you'd like.

Is it possible for you to explain your infrastructure a little more indepth or provide some sort of diagram? I'm trying to wrap my head around some best practices for my home datacenter project as well and I really admire your setup. I see that you're using the edgerouter which separates your networks. You also mentioned using pfSense as well are you utilizing virtual switches and vlans to separate your home from your lab, or are you using the physical switch to separate vlans? I have so many questions

Yes, please go ahead and tell us about esxi servers such as disk layout.. How to configure exchange server/sharepoint server/ sql server on esxi host, fiber HBA and its connections with LAN.

And here I thought Eaton just made heavy-duty and medium duty truck transmissions.

If you are going to use both your Cisco switches and plan to setup a fiber connection between the two, first only use one connection. You may need to use the "enable unsupported-transceiver" command to get it working if you aren't using Cisco specific SFP's. If you plan to use two SFP's there is a method to getting those working, its a set of hidden commands in the switch. I don't have yet as my Cisco guy is extremely busy right now. But one fiber connection for non-Cisco SFP's works for me on my 3560G's. I will share what I did to get them working once I get the command from my guy and test it.

welcome back bro. Thx for letting us know Power usage. looking at geting a R710 or something but need a Decent Priced Server with Decent Watt's..
Currently useing a HP Prolient DL365 G1 with 32Gigs ram.
And power ussage is 233 Watts Avg.
Looking at Swtching to a Dell Poweredge R710 Much Less Power usage and Higher Performance.

Yeah R710 Idle is around 180 watts and with multiple disks and 2 CPUs and around 48GB of ram

If you only need two drives one CPU and max 32gbs ram then consider the R210 it's noisy but it idles at 40 watts

Luke Wyn-Harris thx that's decent for what i need running game servers mostly

Thanks guys! and the R210 is a good server, but if you dont mind having a lawn mower in the house :P the R510 8 Bay is around 160watts with the low TDP Xeons!

have you ever looked into running vSan?
also we have a very similar home lab
    what i have :
    APC Netshelter 24U Rack
    Sophos SG115 Firewall
    2x Cisco 3750-E switches stacked (L3 routing)
    Dell R620 vmware 6
    Dell R420 vmware 6
12 Bay supermicro for FreeNAS with twin 10G uplinks to each host for iSCSI
Also you should try out running sophos UTM 9 on that utm 220, if you activate the trial license you can trick the device to think its a software appliance by renaming the file called /etc/serial.conf to serial.bak via ssh, then you can apply the free home use license. UTM 9 is very powerful and easy to use.

There is NO parity in RAID 10 it is just a stripe of multiple mirrored drives

    • @Virtualbytes1

id love to have a blade, but for home environment that is like having a lawn mower in the house 24/7 and high power consumption, :( but overall they are awesome!

lol the sound is no issue for me, but i am looking for a way to have multiple servers for quick file access, large file storage, and also over all power for gaming. Also having one stupid beefy server for video and 3d model rendering. Originaly i was thinking about some supermicro servers like the cse-846 (jbod), cse-216 (file server), cse-809t/808t (gaming host), and a dl580 g7 (rendering). But then i saw how cheap the c7000 blade center is and how cheap blades are and i debated for a while, i need some help pls
P.S. love your vids pls keep them comming.
      P.S.S i currently have a IBM x3850 M2 with 4 x 6 Core Xeons and 128gb ddr2
