Buddy passes are up there, but parents, spouse, travel companions take priority over buddy passes. For a buddy pass, the airline employee would book you through their booking portal and give you the itinerary number. From there, as a buddy pass rider, you’d be able to check in without needing any credentials. The most important thing to note is that if anything goes wrong, it’s worth it to reach out to the person that booked form. But for something like not making your flight, usually the gate agent will move you to the next flight.

How do they define the priority list? Apparently the process is different for all airlines, as some do not allow unaccompanied travel partner without the employee. Is this being checked?

This info is not correct. Buddy passes don’t go before retirees on American, and we board by check in time not seniority
