- The matching sweaters return for a five-part introit for All Saints from the first volume of Byrd's Gradualia (1605). Composed in a somewhat old-fashioned idiom, the piece has a four-part structure determined by the introit text, which traditionally repeats an opening sentence on either side of a topical psalm verse with doxology. Byrd sets the psalm verse for a reduced number of voices, bringing all five back in for the Gloria Patri in a more homophonic style.
Text:
Gaudeamus omnes in Domino diem festum celebrantes sub honore omnium sanctorum; de quorum sollemnitate gaudent angeli, et collaudant filium Dei.
Verse (trio): Exultate justi in Domino, rectos decet collaudatio. (Ps. 32/33:1)
Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto.
Gaudeamus omnes...(repeated)
Let all rejoice in the Lord, celebrating a feast in honour of all the saints; in which solemnity the angels rejoice, and together praise the Son of God.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, ye just ones, for praise befits the righteous.
