I usually choose 3 thru hikers every season to follow. Your well spoken intro makes you a contender! Looking forward to following your adventures. You will probably sleep in your tent more than planned. The shelters are great for bad weather but fill up fast in the bubble. Early arrival is essential for a spot. Then there's the mice, the snores, others moving in and out and all about -- hope you're not a light sleeper -- it's a lot! Congrats and best of luck!
Thanks!! I am most worried about the snoring. The mice actually don’t bother me. And, I’m a bit of an early bird so I would rather be on trail by 6:00/7:00a and setting up at a shelter an hour or more before dark. If I night hike, I usually do it in the morning than the evening. But I’ll see how it goes the first few weeks.
A little outside pressure can be a great motivator! And I love that your kids are inspiring you. Mine are a huge inspiration for me, too. 💙 We’ll be out there starting mid March from the arch. Let’s do this!!
Awesome!! Thank you. I need all the support I can get. And love getting it from Down Under!! I’ve been to Sydney, Melbourne, and Bundaberg before. Love Australia!!
I got a new pack, too (went down in size to a HMG Junction)! I’m so glad I made the switch. I hope you’re happy with your pack. I can’t remember everyone’s start time frames. We’ll be on trail mid March. Maybe we’ll see you?! Happy trails!
Hey John. Congratulations on this decision. This will be one of the most rewarding experiences. Life changing! I just stumbled across your channel while searching for interesting hikes. I do lots of hiking and posting on UA-cam myself. I hike a lot on the AT too. I haven’t done a thru-hike myself, but it crosses my mind often. I just followed your channel John! It looks like I’m your 56th subscriber! Woohoo!!! I look forward to staying connected and seeing how you do on this challenging. I wish you the best!
Also having lived in SE Pa., I’ve hiked several sections of the AT in Pa., Md., NJ, NY and recently Ga., and I’ve often thought that if I ever decided to thru hike the AT I would do it exactly like you are; knock out Md., Pa., NJ and NY in late Fall/winter before heading to Springer in early March. I’ll be following along on your journey and wish you the best of luck. Godspeed.
WOW Sir. First off, you know my sister Lisa Gomez from working at Deloitte. I think you hired her at one point😂😂😂. She says hello and congrats on your finish. I will be on the AT next year. Congrats from myself as well and I look forward to watching your AT hike vids. I found you from Capt Jack. Take care and nice to meet you from afar
Thanks! Love Lisa!! How awesome. Pls tell her hello. I’m going to do a couple wrap up videos this coming week. One on gear stuff and one on the overall experience and lessons learned. Then I’ll watch Capt Jack on his yoyo!
Good luck! Have fun! I'd love to hear your trail commentary about feelings, perspectives, insights, etc. Sorry you'll miss my Trail Magic in June in MD. Hike on! ☮️❤️🤝
Thanks brother! Sorry I’ll miss you at MM but glad we caught up in NYC. I’ll catch you when I pass thru there on my way from Harper’s Ferry to the middle of NY
Peekskill in Middle of NY? Even though I thought I knew the trial, you made me look it up. Yet, I hope to meet you as you enter Western Mass (Berkshires). I live a mile from the trail as you approach Butternut. Great place to visit, and I would love to host a break. I live in a mansion with links to many historical families, but you might recognize a reference to Morgan Stanley.
You like pressure? Where is the fundraising theme? Crows paying for every mile, 60 for National and 40 for Phi Lamba! Happy to help with the logistics. Win-Win! I would love the mission.
Fellow 2024 thru hiker, I am starting April 10/11th. Question, is that a race car in your pic? Coming from the car racing business, that drew my attention. :) Anyway, subscribed. -fellow semi-retired business guy.
Thanks. If you mean the thumbnail pic I don’t think so. I snapped that pic at a road crossing in PA on the north side of Wind Gap, PA. There was an RV parked in the trailhead lot there as I recall

Hard to believe this is the same guy who danced shirtless (back when that was sort of kind of ok :) at an all hands offsite. Good luck John
Following. I retire in a few years and want to do this. How old are you, if you don’t mind me asking?
Thx good luck
60. And I’ve met several guys older than me. Second day I hiked with a 71 yr old who is doing his second thru hike! You definitely can do it.
You like pressure? Where is the fundraising theme? Crows paying for every mile, 60 for National and 40 for Phi Lamba! Happy to help with the logistics. Win-Win! I would love the mission.
Ha! Hadn’t thought of that. I figure I’ve arm twisted people enough for $ the last 6 months or so. Time to pass that baton.

Rt 115 on the north end of Wind Gap, PA
I think that’s my camper! Happy trails!!
You’re through hiking the AT? Too bad. GL next time 😊
