I thought his song was about envy and revenge in the lyric "I'm gonna shine a light on your darker side like you did for mine" as it's ironically "live at karma studios" but now you've opened my mind up! Now I'm shook! maybe it's about a person who has died or a friend who is struggling with mental health and he couldn't be there to help the way that this ambiguous person could as you suggested It could be schizophrenia as a lyric "talking to the walls" - so powerful!
Incredible to watch someone else’s reaction with clearly a lot more knowledge and depth in singing. But still draw the same tenderness and realness as I felt. He is AMAZING! I have been lucky enough to witness many of his shows live and it’s mind blowing. Great review. Keep up the good work
this is matt corby today only released last week all the other songs are 9 or ten years old great new albumm hope it does well i see he has some gigs in america in the next couple of months two shows i know of are sold out

Yes, there's a new album. His singles are amazing as you would expect. Check out "Reelin' " its so good. Or "Problems" that's all I've heard so far, I'm sure the whole album is amazing.
Pretty sure this song is about how he walked away from his faith but is now finding it again. It’s like a Q&A with God. The album is wanting to call people in the church back to a higher standard as believers. I truly doubt he will ever call himself a Christian until he is truly walking 100% in step with God again, but this album has so many call backs to his songs from when he was walking with the Lord & is full of intense confessionals, as well as a lot of really straight Biblical language, lines like “I’m gonna shine a light on your darkest side like you did for mine” really make this obvious (just capitalize the second Y & he’s talking to God - literally I dare you to go back through his music & capitalize Y’s & you’ll see just how much he’s not been able to get away from it in his lyrics). I could be totally wrong, but as a believer myself I’ve had many dreams about him over the years & I’ve expressed them to people who are like 2 degrees of separation from Matt who have come back & told me they were 100% accurate. I’ve low key been praying for a song like Better Than That because I feel like the healing he has received over the last few years means he can lead people out of the darkness & into the light. Personally I thought it was more anecdotal, likely about a friend who he worked with in some capacity in the music industry, who’s since quit maybe, and the song is his kind of plea to make up or closing the distance between them. “Villifying the work place,” “dad giving up his guitar,” “but music holds your hand.” But that could very well be having a conversation with himself, which is a really interesting concept and I can see how it could possibly be his own issues with the industry and whatnot. @Storytime with Yaz As for better than that, my own understanding was that it was about addiction. But that’s the beauty of music, art and good lyricism, it’s for people to interpret themselves and find their own connections and meanings. Overall I think this has been Matt’s most honest album yet lyrically, he’s always had a way of being somewhat allusive and meticulous in his lyricism in my opinion which really did leave things up to the listeners interpretation. I know he got a co writer on a lot of (or all?) the tracks and I think she really did help evolve his own writing style.

It’s crazy how Corby is almost better live than studio. Like how is that possible, his singing abilities are superhuman. He’s one of my favorites!!!
