Annie M.G Schmidt's texts will always remain relevant. She was a marvel! A visionary influence all Dutch grew up with. She wrote the first song about homosexuality (Taboo, mentioning Romeo and Julius), the first t.v series where a black man fell in love with a white girl, another series about a pension for outcasts with mental health issues, rebellious children's poems etc etc. All in the fifties and sixties already. Decades before any of it was mentioned anywhere else. Performing in her pieces like in this musical Foxtrot f.e was also an easy way for artists to openly show that they were gay. I am convinced this contributed to the early acceptance and the fact that The Netherlands were the first country to legalise and perform same sex marriages. Harry Bannink, the composer was also a phenomenon who wrote the sound of our youth. Tunes in children's programs, complete musical tv series, the first Dutch musicals and leading the orchestra in one of our most beloved children's programs, De film van Ome Willem, where he was De Grote Grijze Geitenbreier! ( The big grey goat knitter, kinda like the big grey kahuna).
I was part of a ensemble of foxtrot in the early 90s. The writer, Annie mg schmidt came to see us. (We were a semi professional amateur group) She sat at the first row close to the stage (she was nearly blind at that time) It was a magical moment seeing her clapping and singing along. The best one we played because of her enthusiasm. I was and am a big fan of her books. We had a meet and greet after the show. I was very impressed. Great memories. Great musical Most songs are still relevant today. Some more than before. Songs about Homosexuality, (Romeo en julius, wat ik nou toch heb gelezen) unwanted pregnancy (over tijd), suicide, (to be or not to be) politics and war (niets aan de hand, dansen op de vulcaan) Carice van houten (game of thrones) played the naive girl in foxtrot once.
Anne MG Schmidt was an icon. She wrote fantastic children's poems and did not talk down on them. These poems could be naugthy and many had a rebellious streak to it. The poems are also appealing to adults. I still read them sometimes. One of her poems was about the flower Fucksia and was made into song. Can you imagine a children choir singing: (A cutting) of the fuch-, fuch-, fuchsia.
And that black mans name Panunsoprano was talking about was Donald Jones, a singer, dancer and actor. He was one of the first black men coming from The USA to the Netherlands and he had a succesful career here. He sang a lovesong in that serie "ik zou je het liefste in een doosje willen doen en bewaren" "I would like to put you in a little box and keep you safe" that became very famous and was sung by Dutch people for years. You can still find it on UA-cam, but the lyrics are not relevant anymore these days. He was appreciated and loved.

Thanks for reacting Highly! It's an honor. I'm a big fan of both Yentl & De Boer and Simone Kleinsma, so this was like a dream combi for me
Fantastic Video Axel. I appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment. They are definitely fantastic together! Looking forward to their journeys :)
