Indeed ...her voice carried a sound that was unmistakable and " larger than life " ....... It was 1967... I was 13 years of age, .... I still enjoy this music and introduced my daughters to all this music of the 60's/ 70's and 80's .
My mom died in 1966 when I was 8 years old. When this song would come on the radio I knew that it was from her. I'd listen to it every night before going to bed. That was her goodnight kiss.
But you know, this is just what a mom /parent etc/ who had to leave a child behind would HOPE for, that there would be some way to send love across the silent boundary back to the loved one. And what a great song to carry that!

They suffer so much from birthing you, nurturing you, protecting you and worrying about you as you grow and learn, and it continues even as you grow into adulthood and become a mother yourself. You follow the same course by the examples she set for you. You become her. That's why you never truly lose her because she lives within you.

Michelle Phillips start the song so softly, and then John, Denny, and Cass come in with those powerful vocals and beautiful arrangement. Still makes my hair stand on end after all these years. What a classic composition and performance.

The process weeded the rubbish out before people heard it. If you look at a top 40 from that era then just about anyone still around from those days will immediately know every one of them.

Way before my time, but I grew up listening to this. My mom started playing 60’s music for me when I was too young to even know or care that these were “old songs”. Of all the bands from that era that she loves, the Mamas and the Papas are my favorite. I could listen to those gorgeous harmonies all day.
And in this 60's psychedelic era, these guys blended smooth harmonies and beautiful lyrics and it was not rock and roll or hallucinogenic riffs but beautiful and wonderful music. if you were good then, you made it.
This is one of "the most 60s" groups, ever. The clothes, Michelle's beauty, the Canyon, West L.A. and these 9-or-10 songs...a brief, powerful moment in U.S. history. So glad we have this footage.

Michelle brings incredible innocence and sincerity in the intro, like a gently flowing stream. Then, all harmonies hit. The words and music open the floodgates. I could cry knowing such a powerful, beautiful musical era is long gone, never to return. Or maybe. In my novel, Soothing The Savage Beat, by E. Augustine, I describe a dystopian future where such beautiful, sensible music has long been forgotten, but may be revived in an attempt to restore sanity in a world gone mad. Music is the therapy we need. And we need both. Even today, but by tomorrow we'll be desperate for both.
Got to give credit to John. He wrote those songs and mixed those voices to create a one-of-a-kind, amazing sound. Interestingly, he and MacKenzie came to our high school in the early 80’s to talk about drug abuse.
I was 7 yrs old when this and many of the great songs of that era came out. I used to listen every day to the radio with my mother who sadly passed away in march 2020. This is one of those songs that reminded me of the happiest days of my life listening with her.

great memory! I first kissed a girl in the spring of 1971 at a drive in movie - Woodstock. One awkward kiss. In June 1971, 3 of my friends and I ended up at a high school graduation party. This song came on the radio right when I started my car as I was leaving the church to go to to the cemetery to bury my mom. I bawled all the way there and still am, 2 years later. Hug your mom today, tell her how much you love her, get as much time spent with her recorded so you can hear her voice and see her beautiful smile. I didn’t do that How I wish I would’ve
It wouldn't matter how much time you spent with your mom, it would never be enough. Keep positive. Let her know you love her. You'd be surprised at how those we miss tend to show up in ways you wouldn't expect. I'm sorry about your mom, but I don't think it's the end. Just a strange in between point.

Michelle brings incredible innocence and sincerity in the intro, like a gently flowing stream. Then, all harmonies hit. The words and music open the floodgates. I could cry knowing such a powerful, beautiful musical era is long gone, never to return. Or maybe. In my novel, Soothing The Savage Beat, by E. Augustine, I describe a dystopian future where such beautiful, sensible music has long been forgotten, but may be revived in an attempt to restore sanity in a world gone mad. Music is the therapy we need. And we need both. Even today, but by tomorrow we'll be desperate for both.
Got to give credit to John. He wrote those songs and mixed those voices to create a one-of-a-kind, amazing sound.
Interestingly, he and MacKenzie came to our high school in the early 80’s to talk about drug abuse.
I was 7 yrs old when this and many of the great songs of that era came out. I used to listen every day to the radio with my mother who sadly passed away in march 2020. This is one of those songs that reminded me of the happiest days of my life listening with her.

Michelle should have sung more. She has a great voice. She is so captivating...she makes you want to listen to her. The others lift her performance to the stratusphere. I can't imagine anybody else doing this song other than Michelle Phillips. So sweet!
She would have sung more if she was not sleeping around with every man that she came in contact with. John was the boss that delegated the songs. She got much less lead parts as a punishment.
