As a "faithful" member of the church why should any of us feel we we "deserve more" than anyone else? I'm no better than my brother or sister newly converted. The first shall be last and last first. I am a sinful man. My mortality distances me from my Heavenly Father. I thank God for this parable of the workers in the field. The moment we think we deserve more than anyone else we need to start our labors over. With a good dose of humility. We all like sheep have gone astray and anyone offended by that parable needs to take a good look in the mirror. My longevity in the gospel is not indicitive of my reward.

Such an outstanding discussion on these two beautiful parables. Thank you John for sharing that amazing example that your brother used with children to show that in the end, a father in heaven and a savior gives us the gift of all he has, if we are willing to run the race. Such a great analogy to help us all see how that parable works. Ganel -lyn’s examples of how we need to be in tune with the spirit to know the things we need to let go off in our lives. The things we may have become too focused on.

I always thought the parable of the hiring of workers at different times during the day seemed unfair. But then one day as a missionary with my husband, we taught the gospel to a man who had lived a troubled life and then found truth and was willing to live truth for the rest of his life. The payday seemed overwhelmingly fair. I cried for all the joy this man had missed for not learning truth as a youth or a young child. He deserved to not be left out a second time. I also realized all the blessings I took for granted. We could both share the same blessings and that seemed fair.

Thank you so much! Listening to this episode brought me personal revelation referring to my current situation. I had to give up a great job that I've worked hard for to obtain, to support my husband in a different country. And daily I kept asking what is the plan for me and started losing hope that there is a plan for me, and that what I've done was just a waste and that I'm just wasting away in this foreign country. But I realized that this experience is to help me spiritually, to have a better understanding of cleaving unto my husband, the importance of marriage, and family. This is my second marriage, and I was single for a very long time. Even after my marriage, I've always had this mindset of I'm on my own, and that I have to always be prepared to take care of myself. This lesson reminded me to get out of that mindset, and that mindset is not going to help me progress. Thank you.

Anyone have adverts interrupt this discussion? Adverts aren't normally on Talk of Him.....unless they are added after the week of study 🤔

Another podcast suggested seeing the Labour's parable as dispensations, we Latter-day Saints are the ones employed on the 11th hour. We have the temples, scriptures in our pockets, etc etc.....do the Pioneers or those who translated the Bible for everyday people say "that's not fair"....or are they praising the work that is going forward?

I’ve had youth ask the question about fairness regarding the prodigal and also the laborers, not with the idea that the results aren’t fair, but more the idea that, “… it’s not fair, that person gets to go eat, drink, and be merry now and then eventually turn to Christ, repent, and gain exhalation. Why should I not do the same now?” Thoughts?

Here's my thought - take it or leave it, but when we choose to only focus on the good (and be jealous of it), we ignore the bad. Yes, the prodigal son got a welcome home party. Yes, the laborers also got a penny. Yes, we can take part in the world then repent and be forgiven. However, that mindset overlooks the suffering that each of these people had to go through first. The prodigal son was lost, hungry, dirty, homeless, and so desperate he was willing to eat with the pigs. The laborers had to wait all day with fear, not knowing if they would be able to get work or not and if they didn't, would have to go home to their families with bad news of no money for food or living expenses. With the people of today, none of us are exempt from trials, but those without the church are lost and confused without knowledge of where to find truth, lack knowledge that there's a plan to why everything happens and the purpose for our mortal existence, along with having to suffer more from consequences of addiction, having sex/getting pregnant out of marriage, lacking a strong support group (like the church), and more. Of course, life isn't as simple as these parables, but I'd personally rather live in comfort of the church and knowing that I'm safe and protected by God, and that I can repent for my sins and be healed rather than live in confusion and fear of what's to come.

I loved this one (always do). But my heart is stired and many thoughts come... of times I have listened and walked away from something I loved because the Lord told me to and how maybe they're are other changes i need to make. I also identify with the early servants, in that I've been here the whole time... but now I also see there are ways I'm late in the day. I went back to school to finish a degree at 40 with 5 kids... now at 44 pondering if a Masters is what the Lord wants me to do. I've resisted thinking, "I'm too old it won't benefit me more than the cost. " Maybe the Lord has other ideas.

How cool, Amanda. In some ways we are all early, and in some ways we are all late. I love that. Thanks for sharing!
