You should check out the fight scene in Oldboy (2003) when he squares up to a gang in a dim lit corridor. No fancy stuff. Just down to earth bone busting. Great movie.
I hope a big budget martial arts movie pitting all the creative styles like monkey fist and donkey hips is made one day. I love that style when a new style is always more feared and everyone is surprised when its announced.
The best thing about these chinese movies is that the bad guy is really capable. The protagonists victory does not in any way undermine the capabilities of the villain. Its always a hard won battle.
If anyone like Andy On, which played villain in this movie, there is another movie that he is in, called ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA. Bad ass fight scenes.
If this was a Hollywood action movie, they would've showed us flashes of lights and zoomed in faces of fighters with plenty of meaningless sounds, not the action itself. This video gives some nostalgia.
