- Welcome to The Songwriter’s Workshop. This is the series where I attempt to write songs based on the process and techniques of famous songwriters. Each video looks at a different songwriter’s writing habits, musical inspirations, and creative process while also including an original song written using those techniques.
In this video, we return to the songwriting techniques of MacArthur Park writer Jimmy Webb, taking a look at the lyric writing methods in his book Tunesmith. Jimmy's lyric writing insights help to to write my new song Santa Fe.
Check out my other video on Jimmy's tips on how to get started on an idea for a song: • How to get started on ...

your best song so far. well done. keep going.
Agree. Well done.
The idea for this channel is great and unique. I would love to see you do someone like Neil Young, Connor Oberst, or maybe even go more towards different genres like hip-hop. I personally would love to to see a video on somebody like Kid Cudi
Great suggestions, thanks!
This a great overview of key parts of Tunesmith. I read that book a year ago and took a lot of notes! I also agree with another commenter about this being the best song you’ve put out on this channel to date.
great piano skills and beautiful music. This was a great video, glad to have ran across your channel on my journey of learning Music Theory
Wow this might be my favourite of your songs so far! I'm late to a lot of these videos, but really enjoying the series
YES! thank you
I love these videos! Please do Thom Yorke next, he’s by far my favourite songwriter
I love Thom's songs too, I'll definitely get to him at some point. Thanks!
@@TheSongwritersWorkshop you’ve made me a very happy lil’ dude
Beautiful keychange, best song so far. Can´t wait to see more.
Love these videos
Hello, I hope you do one on melody.
I love your content so much. I'd love to see one on Jim Steinmann.
Beautiful piano theme. Love it.
I really like these series on songwriters/songwriting.
.
I maybe would experiment with a vocal chain ...
so that your voice becomes more of the focus instead of the piano.
I mean that in a positive way. :-)
.
[ I'm thinking of a bit of compression, a bit of saturation, reverb and limiting ]
See if that works for you... [ hope so ] 🙂
.
Thanks + subscribed.
I fww this account 💯🦾keep em coming
amazing work and the song really feels like something I would listen to on a daily basis... also, are you planning to cover Ben Gibbard's songwriting style? I think he has some of the best lyrics I ever heard.
Can't wait to see more!!
Please do a video on the greatest living songwriter besides Dylan…Jason Isbell ✅
Love both Dylan and Jason's music, I'll have to look into their processes. Thanks for the recommendation!
What a cool concept for a video series! I have a question: I've had some moderate success with the method of writing the lyrics out in prose form, then making them fit to the music and creating rhymes by phrasing things differently.
Have you ever tried this? If so, how did you feel about it? And do you know of any artists that write their lyrics like this?
I haven't come across any yet, but it sounds interesting and is somewhat similar to the letter writing method that Jimmy talks about in his book (see my first video on Jimmy for more). I used a couple of lines directly from my letter for Santa Fe and then wrote lines to rhyme with them. Your method would be an interesting way to approach lyric writing, I'll have to give it a try sometime!
NOISE IN BACKGROUND
It’s crazy to me people start with words first.
I could almost never write a lyric and then the music. They has to be at least a seed of a melody when I start a lyric. But, that's just me.
