May I suggest a more specific rule for 1 base vs 1 base: no buildings outside the main are allowed. But mining is. That way you can do SCV caravans that go on mining expeditions
I feel like 1 base vs. 1 base will end in a stalemate too often, especially once it's "solved". The defender usually has the advantage in fights, and if you can't expand then it's impossible to make up for inefficient trades.
I think if I were playing against protoss energy only the best answer is probably to mass thors. None of the protoss energy units can beat thors. The best unit they can have to fight thors are oracles, and that's.. pretty sad when you have to fight thors with oracles.

It should end up being a "safe" turtle war of who can trade more efficiently, with units like tank/liberator creating a defensive wall for the nuke pushes, or scan + yamato sniping. Overall, energy and siege units (meaning super long range) should be especially valuable for their trade efficiency, while units such as marines, marauders, reapers will tend to be less valuable than normal. For Protoss, I'd expect to see strategies like Tempest + batteries, disruptors, sentry hallucination scouts and oracle revelation + stasis wards. For Zerg, I can't imagine them winning a prolonged turtle war without heavily relying on swarm hosts.
I have a crazy potentially fun challenge. You can't build more than 1 unit until you have 1 of every other type of unit. So when you build a barracks you have to build one of each of them before you can build from the factory, then you have to build one of every factory unit, and lastly once every factory unit is built you can build starport units. Now you have all of those you can build 2 of any kind of unit but cannot build 3 until there are 2 of every unit, and so on. (SCVs don't count but you can't use them for offense). When a unit dies you must replace it before you can build other units. I call this the Thanos Challenge as it is balanced as all things should be.
This one seems really neat. Another similar Challenge that'd be really funny is "Annex Only" Challenge, where you can only expand by taking over bases previously occupied by opponent expansions (i.e. you rush, kill their currently building natural, then build/float yours in their place, or do some proxy hatch thing)
I think in practice that's no different than just being a one base all in unless there's some crazy base trade happening. It pretty much never happens that you can beat your opponent soundly enough that you can safely expand on their old base without being able to outright kill the opponent.
Try this: You cannot build any buildings without building 2 of them at the same time adjacent to each other. You can play whatever you want except for Zerg. First pylon or depot requires 2 pylons, first expand requires 2 CCs or 2 nexuses next to each other and so on.
removing battery overcharge was a very rare amazing change by the balance council, definitely would prefer it never came back - the very existence of it forces so much meta and balancing horror. the energy recharge is much more versatile, more fun, and less meta warping

Idea for.a challenge: you can only make units that your opponent makes (so mirror matchups only). Since you can't build any until you've seen theirs, you will be behind, so it forces you to outplay.
I unironically think that last guy could have had a chance against thermy if he rushed ghosts. He could have proxied the Ghost Academy and hidden the Ghosts within a bunker or in a Medivac (might not have time to tech up to that). Then the second two archons are dropped, you unload the ghosts and poof the Archons or otherwise force the pickup. Meanwhile, two ghosts could also be across the map, killing the enemy mineral lines. Also, ghosts can EMP observers, meaning the only reliable detection would be cannons, as ghosts don't kill cannons.
Ghosts should theoretically counter that composition, although, I suspect that players at his level wouldn't be good enough at EMPing templars before they use feedback (the EMP technically has more range, but there's not a lot of room for error on it).
Challenge Idea: Hero SUV AFK Challenge. Everything is AFK for the first 2-3 minutes of the game, EXCEPT 1 SUV. You can produce units from anything built by that SUV, so you still have access to marines - and you could build a base to start producing more SUVs - but until then your income is static via the afk SUVs that you can't touch. Could certainly adjust the difficulty with the AFK time, like against Bronze/silver, you could probably get away with longer - and on a longer timer, you might actually build a new base early, just to get access to gas and income. (Though technically, you could get access to gas via the 1 SUV, but I'm not sure if that's how you want to utilize your sole builder.)

it would be cool to see a terran only 2CC tournament(maybe make a mod that limits CCs to an increasing cap, 1CC till 5 minutes, 2CC at 10min, 3CC at 15 min or a research) not one base but 2CC so they could move around their bases when one mines out. pick a set of some massive maps so that rushing is discouraged and maybe some custom maps as well.

new challange, if you build a certain unit/building you have to get all their specific upgrades as fast as possible. for example you build a bunker and have to research all the bunker upgrades.
I think removing Battery Overcharge (and more importantly replacing it with Energy Overcharge) was a good thing for the game. Having access to both would be too much. Idk, maybe if you had to upgrade your Nexus for it like an Orbital or something like that, if people really miss it that much.

The shield overcharge shouldn't be on the Nexus, should keep the energy recharge. Then have a new ability for Sentries in which they can do a shield boost on structures (units seems too powerful) that costs energy. It would allow for higher tier play and not super easy "click button to win" button as you have to manage multiple resources.
Have you ever thought about doing matches between co-op commanders? Level 15 obviously; power sets maybe but don't know if you can do. I remember people doing custom games with co-op commanders when they were doing Rock the Cabinet contests; didn't know if it was still possible.
Marc, please consider not using 720p60 and higher. This is not handled by my old gaming laptop and perhaps some other in your audience. Please have a poll on this. I may be not alone. Just my 50 cents.
How about something like chess, or "Protect the King" - Players must state which unit will be their king to the other player. They can only make one of this unit, and it must be made before X minutes is up (10 maybe?) Losing the king means losing the game.
also, i recently updated bnet launcher and all the installed games and logged in each to play each one for a few hours cept WoW WoW takes more than a couple hours... I played a few games of Hearthstone, lvl'd up/did some MF/rushed a hero on d2R, did a few solos on WC3R, and then on SC2. however, i do NOT remember seeing this map in the POOL AT ALL.... it looks horrendous all around...
Please include an on-screen description of the current challenge for the first 2 minutes of the game. I kept having to rewind to figure out what the challenge was
