I have one wife and I am content, however, this does not mean that I shoupd dictate to others to have only one wife. Its a choice, if the women are happy to be part of a polygamous relationship that is ok. What people sometimes forget is that parenthood is not just about having money to cater for the children...it is also about being fully present in their lives. Dear Adeola, may I ask for your pardon to say that polygamy is not for everyone and its not a sin. Our pastors should be blamed for the misinformation on the concept of monogamy and polygamy respectively. Theologically speaking, its evident and biblical that some of our patriarchs including father Abraham were polygamous and it wasn't recorded against them as a sin. In contrast, there were those who lived with one wife till death. In the new testament, polygamy was almost a silent subject to discuss except when Apostle Paul advised that Bishops (Presbyteros) were to be married to one wife so as to avoid distractions and for effective ministry. Additionally, there are parables in the new testament where polygamy is mentioned metaphorically. Now, as an African speaking from the African point of view, Polygamy was never our problem in any way and was never discussed on any platform for or against its practice because it was a norm and a way of life. However, our new-found religion (christianity), came to us with lots of does and don'ts of which our people never embraced completely as were colonized by both the British (christianity) and the Arabs (Islam) which left with more confusion than clarity not until the 19th century when we became more catholic than the Pope that we started tagging those who are polygamous. The truth about this subject is that polygamy is a way of life for Africans and in consonance with nature and even the Bible when approached objectively and without sentiment. On the other hand, monogamy is unnatural , anti-African and subjective in nature. The first major reason why men are encouraged to have more than one wife is because of existence of so many widows and single females who without legal partners encouraged social vices such as adultery, fornication rape etc. The first rule for marrying another wife is that you must inform the wife at home about your intention. Men who have the means to take care of three were encouraged to have two such that marrying another wife will not affect what is made available for the first wife The third rule is that you must be fair and even handed in the way you treat your wives but avoid being judgemental only God can judge. My answer to your question 'Do men need more than one wife'? is very simple 'Do couples need more than one child'? So if you know you can fulfil all the three conditions above why not. My own suggestion on that is not to judge him on his own previous wives, but for him not to marry additional wife, and then his suggestion is ok in condemning the polygamy now, due to poverty level of most of those families and with his own experiences in marrying 4 wives(in which he can not chase them away now), as he realized the consequences in having a polygamous family under a poverty level. They can also set up a parameter that can qualify or disqualify someone from marrying two or more wives without being financially stable to bear such responsibilities.
There are good reasons while some men marry more than one wife bcos ot prevents some women to become public liability,{prostitutes} irresponsible etc. most men who are against more than one wife have one wife and many concubines outside their marriage

What this hammered on here is to be just in your dealing, affection between two people may not be possible but you can be just in dealing with them, which is exactly what I explained before and whatever a man does out of forgetfulness, unknowingly or by mistake is forgiven by Allah and evidence to that is in the hadiths below..

Qur'an 4:3 states "And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]." Muhammad/the Qur'an gave the men the opportunity to have up to four wives. So, let's leave Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi alone with his four wives. It is acceptable by Allah.
Let's however completely ignore that Muhammad was so loved and respected by Allah that it was acceptable for Muhammad to be an exception to the maximum-of-four-wives rule by having nine to eleven wives (Sahih al-Bukhari 5068; Sahih al-Bukhari 5069; Sahih al-Bukhari 5215; Sahih al-Bukhari 268).

Dear Adeola, may I ask for your pardon to say that polygamy is not for everyone and its not a sin. Our pastors should be blamed for the misinformation on the concept of monogamy and polygamy respectively. Theologically speaking, its evident and biblical that some of our patriarchs including father Abraham were polygamous and it wasn't recorded against them as a sin. In contrast, there were those who lived with one wife till death. In the new testament, polygamy was almost a silent subject to discuss except when Apostle Paul advised that Bishops (Presbyteros) were to be married to one wife so as to avoid distractions and for effective ministry. Additionally, there are parables in the new testament where polygamy is mentioned metaphorically. Now, as an African speaking from the African point of view, Polygamy was never our problem in any way and was never discussed on any platform for or against its practice because it was a norm and a way of life. However, our new-found religion (christianity), came to us with lots of does and don'ts of which our people never embraced completely as were colonized by both the British (christianity) and the Arabs (Islam) which left with more confusion than clarity not until the 19th century when we became more catholic than the Pope that we started tagging those who are polygamous.
The truth about this subject is that polygamy is a way of life for Africans and in consonance with nature and even the Bible when approached objectively and without sentiment. On the other hand, monogamy is unnatural , anti-African and subjective in nature.
Finally, I want to you to register this in your subconscious that we still have the likes of father Abraham, Solomon, Jacob and King David among us. I strongly believe that polygamy is not a sin as long as you are capable of taking care of your wives and children. Just by looking at the comments, the mentality is already spelled out. These are concerns that should break our hearts each time we hear of them but we laugh about it as if it’s a joke. Each time I watch this amazing lady share our ills, I feel so heart broken and wish I were a thousand men. These are no laughing concerns because we have the responsibility to change the fate of our continent and our countries but the truth remains that we have always seen this as a far fetched motive. But change will never come until we reach out for it. Dr king said “in the end we won’t remember our enemies for the ills they did but our friends for keeping quite” we as a people cannot listen and watch all these ills and sit quiet not ignore them. DaReal Emm .... brother i might not know who u personally but I honestly love ur views. Ur articulations of the dangers of association with Africans are exactly correct. That’s why I say we need a mind set revolution. Bcus until Africa is restored, the black man will never find significance. And no I have never started a movement because of all the set backs you just highlighted above but I am presently working on one right now. It’s taking me yrs Bcus it has to be a master plan that will transform minds. We as a people cannot continue like this. Generations have come and gone with this le sais faire attitude. I must be honest with you though, Africans don’t read. Infact very few of them do except for exams. That is why we as a people remain so backward. Africans home and abroad never have first hand information and u and I know that the power to life is information. We Africans never go looking for knowledge and information that can catalyse us and reboot our minds. We always focus on subjects that do not matter and criticize those making the efforts. This precarious nature of Africans runs in our leaders and is being passed on even as we speak. So I guess we both know better. Africa needs help badly and you have just said my mind in ur last reply. We really should be in touch. People were coming to Nigeria to study before. It's because our educational system has been turncated.
Think about how much we spend in Ghana and SA on tuition, accommodation and livelihood. All that money spent in other countries, meanwhile we can spend same in Nigeria. Govt needs to create enabling environment. Meanwhile, secondary schools in Nigeria is so expensive as compared with US and Canada. You can get good education in public schools abroad for almost free, but in Naija you have to go private. Govt need to revive public schools

Adeola please before you talk on the cost of schooling abroad get your statistic right. Currently, Nigeria Government under Buhari is wasting Billions of Dollars sending junior lecturers from Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Technical schools for doctorate degrees abroad even without any restriction to discipline. Back at home, our schools are suffering development.

It might sound somehow, but there many reason one would need more than of one wife.
1. Boredom, stimes marriages get boring.
2. Child marriage, when a choice is made for u, n a time might come you want to make ur choice
3. Careless from the wife, most women change from being sexy to not being sexy while in marriage. Keep ur shape biko.
4. Curiosity. Man is a curious being, he wonder a lot, n in bid to make it right a new might come up
5. Population imbalance, more Ladies than guys at the marriageable ages.

The first major reason why men are encouraged to have more than one wife is because of existence of so many widows and single females who without legal partners encouraged social vices such as adultery, fornication rape etc. The first rule for marrying another wife is that you must inform the wife at home about your intention. Men who have the means to take care of three were encouraged to have two such that marrying another wife will not affect what is made available for the first wife The third rule is that you must be fair and even handed in the way you treat your wives but avoid being judgemental only God can judge. My answer to your question 'Do men need more than one wife'? is very simple 'Do couples need more than one child'? So if you know you can fulfil all the three conditions above why not. Also one of the arguments against polygamy is that you can not love two wives and my reply is that a lot of parents have more than one child do they love them. I think you also got it wrong with the comment made by Lamido. I think what he was saying is that people who can not meet the three conditions stated above are going in to polygamy and are causing problems. I completely agree with him on that too. As far as I am concerned God in the Holy Books encouraged Polygamy for the reasons stated above and more. The argument is actually caused by western culture on monogamy against the words of God. Unfortunately the western propaganda has won over so many modern women ( Lady according to my respected king philosopher Fela Anikulapo Kuti)

Greedy Leadership is the biggest problem in Africa next to tribalism.
My own suggestion on that is not to judge him on his own previous wives, but for him not to marry additional wife, and then his suggestion is ok in condemning the polygamy now, due to poverty level of most of those families and with his own experiences in marrying 4 wives(in which he can not chase them away now), as he realized the consequences in having a polygamous family under a poverty level. They can also set up a parameter that can qualify or disqualify someone from marrying two or more wives without being financially stable to bear such responsibilities.
The man is talking from his experience, it's a individual decision.

There are good reasons while some men marry more than one wife bcos ot prevents some women to become public liability,{prostitutes} irresponsible etc. most men who are against more than one wife have one wife and many concubines outside their marriage

It's not even all about good infrastructure in our educational system but also to provide good job to our graduates out there roaming around the street looking on what to do to better their lives after spending years in school.
