- The enigmatic protagonist of Mad Men, Don Draper, has been celebrated and derided for being a stoic, suave symbol of traditional masculinity. But that's missing the point. Let's investigate.

Description:
Here you will find thoughtful analyses of video games. Gaming is an art form alongside and equal to cinema and literature, but analysis of it has not lived up to that truth. If you've ever thought way too hard about the themes and elements in Zelda, Final Fantasy, Pokémon, and more, this is your channel!
My outro music is Suteki Da Ne from Final Fantasy X: • Video
Thanks for watching, comrades! I've been waiting to watch this one for a while. - Ігри
It’s kind of funny Pete is the embodiment of all the people who want to be don Draper. Absolutely unbearable and doesn’t realize how terrible it would be though with Pete at least he actually becomes a good character
I didn't t realize people actually wanted to be him...being an alcoholic chain-smoker is reason enough not to
One of my favorite moments in the series is in s1e6 ‘Babylon’, when Roy tells Don that he ‘makes the lie’ and ‘creates want’ in reference to his job in advertising. What I love about it is he’s right on a deeper level than just his choice of profession: Don’s entire identity is a fraud, from his name to how he got his job (Roger hired him while drunk and doesn’t remember when Don shows up to his first day), so he ‘makes the lie.’ He’s also constantly womanizing and having affairs even though he has a loving wife and family at home, so he ‘creates want.’ It made me realize that a lot of the things said in this show have a deeper meaning than what it holds in its original context
I agree. The subtext of this show is often more powerful than the text....
What Roy says about Don is definitely true. But Don's response is also true. "There is no conspiracy, no big lie. The universe is indifferent." Like all conspiracy theorists, Roy wants to believe the conspiracy is personal, and it's about victimizing himself and his kind. In fact, the real victim of Don's conspiracy to "create want" and "make the lie" is Don himself. And he actually knows this on some level. The big "Lie" is mutually perpetrated on society by society. And people like Roy, who characterize it as an act of villainy against him, the rebellious hero, far from transcending it, play right into it.
Interesting thing about Roger hiring Don, we never actually see that happen. Don just said it happened, because he knew Roger would be too drunk to remember otherwise, and would go along with it because to do anything else would be admitting weakness. So Roger's greatest career triumph, "discovering" Don, is actually a sham.
@@rottensquid I don’t know if I’d go as far as to call Roy a conspiracy theorist so much as he is observing the consequences of capitalism, which is to create endless want and drive profit
@@cnvrgnt Sure. I just mean that he sees capitalism as a deliberate conspiracy by "The Man" to maintain power. And he's not wrong. But it's not that simple.
Working on a psychoanalytic essay about this show, excellent work
Highly appreciated
Wow... Great commentary, I cannot tell you how but this actually is causing deep self reflection in my life.
This is one of the best Mad Men video essays on UA-cam. Please make more prestige TV analyses you have a great mind/talent for it
This deserves more views. Quality man ♥️
this is exactly what i wish more ppl understood!! the real meaning of these characters n what the message behind them really is, not their shallow facade. it’s almost like ppl aren’t really watching the same shows when i hear what they think of them. but ur a genius make more of these pls!!
Wow, all I could say in response to this analysis is YES. Everything you've said about the character of Don Draper is true and correct except for one thing. I think that one of the reasons he is this shallow chameleon is in self defense. He has nothing in his past but pain and shame. He has nothing but distrust for other people and he adopts this facade I think as a preemptive devise. He is ever trying to outmaneuver people because his past showed him that one needs to survive in a cold and hostile world. I'm not making excuses for the guy, I just see a man that is like a beat cur who has adopted the guise of a lone wolf but he is really just a frail, lost boy.
great video, thank you so much for breaking it down, this character has been a completely mystery for me but also charming as hell. S407 is the most powerful episode! I cried so hard in the end when he held Peggy’s hand. Great show great analysis 😭
My favorite character of all time.
Good video.
Well done! Very perceptive.
This is an excellent analysis of the show and the character of Don Draper.
What better setting to capture the change amongst the general population than an advertising agency, a place that's supposed to take and increase that pulse.
Absolutely brilliant and amazing analysis of my favorite show of all time! Frankly I think yours is the best and trust me I’m obsessed with mad men
