- Just like the movie "Flash Dance" is so important for the history of bboying culure, this clip is extremely important when we talk about hip hop dance culutre. This clip you see here is actually edited sequence of several excerpts from a documentary "Wreckin Shop from Brooklyn". This documentary was aired in PBS in 1992. Directed by music video director, Dian Martel, this documentary captured the vibe of golden age of hip hop era -early 90s. It features hip hop and house dancers in New York such as Mop Top Crew (Buddha Stretch, Peter Paul, Caleaf, Henry Link, E-Joe) and Misfitss (Rubberband, Marquest, Kito, Peek A Boo, Prancer). As many people consider this era as golden age of hip hop dancing, I recall music videos in this era featured lot of real hip hop dancers unlike today's music video where you see the mixture of jazz and hip hop. One interesting dancer in this video is Kito from Misfitss. He has his unique rhythm in dancing though it may hard to see that in this video. But I saw him dancing in other video and he was different in a sense that he seems to dance off beat purposefully but still look fresh. The best scene comes at the end of the documentary which is the battle at club. In this clip, it starts around 7:20.

One of the dopest hip hop docs to date. This changed how we danced to hip hop and house music back in the 90’s. This was a huge inspiration and influence to all the dance crews here in Houston TX.

History I watch this for years
I remember I went to see zhigie perform at a club in the BX. I was displaying all my moves on the dance floor when uptown bounce rakin in the dough was blasting on the speakers. I use to wear alot of polo.. hill & girbraud some times guess Jean jackets. I was into this thing for real. I was like one of the 1st sporting good shit in Washington heights Manhattan back in 92. Epic era.i miss it a lot.

I enjoyed this experience in hiphop 90s from West Coast to East coast we was was battlin like MCs on mics we was in the cyphers in LA Bay Area
I feel there's a very special connection between all the different danceforms within the HipHop culture umbrella... I see this ancient New Style dance and I can feel some influences from the Popping or even Locking dance too and classic party rock moves that were incorporated later all the different forms, the house dance and the new style. Every dance kept evolving on its own vibe and inspired by the different rythms they were danced to. I really appreciate the documentary. I really feel that just the way you can enjoy listening to both rap, house or funk music, learning the traditional dance foundation from each danceform within the HipHop may also enrich your dance skills and broaden your perspective. Some of those dancers were House music dancers. Most of the others were New School Hip Hop dancers,some call it freestyle.
House dancing was another form not taken from hip hop dancing.
Frank White The House Dance culture began in NYC and many of the dancers in the video contributed to the culture in which they merged Hip-Hop with House hence the birth of Hip-House and notable House dance styles like Jacking.
These dancers, along with Ejoe, Brian Green, Marjory Smarth (the baddest female house dancer of her time), Terry from Brooklyn, Caleaf (who’s in the video) and countless others are the creators of House Dance culture in New York City. While Lofting and Footwork were initially danced to Disco, Jacking was purely made for House.
In the 80’s-90’s, Dancing wasn’t just a hobby or recreational, it was a lifestyle for many of us in New York, especially club goers.
Beat Activated This style of dance is called freestyle. You did whatever you wanted to Hip Hop music. It didn’t have to be one particular style of dance. No choreography, no rules, and no limits to your style. You just had to be creative, danced dope, and be battle ready if you got in a cipher.
In truth, it’s just NYC Hip-Hop dance. If you weren’t a Bboy/Bgirl, Popper, or Locker, this was a common way of dancing to Hip-Hop in New York parties and clubs during the late 80’s and 90’s.
Freestyling to House music is what created Jacking, which is why you’re noticing some House moves like spins and lofting (dolphin dives etc.) in the video.
I’m not sure what Peter Paul and Caleaf are dancing to since the video is dubbed when they’re in the club, but they could be dancing to House music at some point, since House was sometimes played in Hip-Hop clubs back then.
