- This is the theme tune from the 1977 film relating the events in September 1944 when a combined British, American and Polish paratrooper force took part in operation 'Market Garden'. The cast included Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Robert Redford and Dirk Bogard, directed by Richard Attenborough. It tells the story of the attempt to secure bridges over the Rhine for the following invasion forces around Arnhem. it was in April 1945 that the 49th West Riding Division liberated Arnhem - in particular the 2nd Batallion Essex Regiment - 'The Polar Bears'. The Brentwood Imperial Youth Band is very proud to wear the Polar Bear on their sleeve and to 'Keep the Old Bear Alive'. We are also honoured to be the custodians of their standard which you will see displayed behind the band.
This was part of the sell out Concert which took place at the end of a day workshop with the Band of the Parachute Regiment on 7th April 2019. Conducted by the Bandmaster of the Parachute Regiment, Staff Sergeant Mike McGowen.
Awesome performance
Victory is often preceded by massive failures AND loss. Triumph must be tempered with the acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by the genuinely heroic!
In addition to British and American soldiers the Poles were also involved, 1st (Polish) Independent Parachute Brigade.
Thank you. Indeed they did - I have corrected the text. The drop took place 75 years ago today on 21st September 1944. Pleasing to see that it has been commemorated.
Band of the parachute regiment?? Lol
Following recent review they are now known as British Army Band, Colchester. We hope to do another concert with them in 2020.
Every regiment had a band corps of drums or pipes and drums at one point
They seem to be getting SOME parts of the tune right...
