Steve Jackson and Sir Ian Livingston not only created the Fighting Fantasy range but they founded Game Workshop and created White Dwarf magazine. They were the first to introduce RPGs to the UK being personally contacted by Gary Gygax in 1975 to be the sole importer for D&D here with an original order of 6 copies
12:28 Do it, Jeff! Totally recommended. FF led me to D&D as a kid, but I got chance to revisit them when my son was at primary school. It was awesome to go back beneath Firetop Mountain, re-encounter Rhino-men in the Citadel, and head for Port Blacksand (City of Thieves) to confront Zanbar Bone. What it really did though, was bypass my nostalgia to show my adult self the level of deep creativity in the fiction which had been far from childish. Excellent review! Thanks. BTW - can't remember if I've said on here - but the sinuous gold dragon on the 2024 D&D PHB cover is extremely reminiscent of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain OG cover. Probably a coincidence, but…
I remember learning about the Fighting Fantasy games in the early ‘80s. The was a book called Dicing with Dragons by Ian Livingstone which was an introduction to the TTRPG hobby. It even started with a solo adventure and simple character creation to play through the adventure. But I never bought into the solo gameplay. The closest I got to it were with a few solo adventure books for Tunnels and Trolls.
As a kid, the FF books whetted my appetite for RPGs and kept me playing when didn't yet own the D&D rulebooks. I still own the Titan book and Scorpion Swamp, and it was the first RPG my daughter ever played to completion. In grade 11, I even attempted to repaint the cover to Titan: The Fighting Fantasy World - which I borrowed so many times from the library that they asked me if I just wanted to buy it from them.
Great Video! Subbed! I LOVE the Fighting Fantasy series and other gamebooks! I only discovered them recently in life and have been blown away by this genre! Its probably responsible for my successful shift into RPG focused illustration. Though getting to draw for a gamebook still eludes me. I’m happy enough drawing for DCC though. :)
