If you watch H&L before the season, it will talk about characters you haven't even seen or heard about, like Sir Davos. Even Stannis had his first screen time only in season 2. Before we only heard about him, but we never saw him.

Stick to after the season. Otherwise there’d be actors you havnt met yet reading about places you havnt seen yet. You’d be lost and it wouldn’t be interesting. The reason it’s interesting now is because you have some knowledge of these people and places

It doesn't spoil anything but probably won't help as much as you think. If you just hate being confused, then you can watch it but I promise you it's ok to be confused. It's a dense show with a lot of plots and sub plots and you can still enjoy it without knowing everything.

You should do them after the seasons because a lot of times there is new information and characters speaking and you won’t be able to recognize them, they’ll just be strangers talking instead of a character you recognize. The voice over work for the stories is always in character, the characters POV, so it works better if you actually know who the character is. You’d have no idea who Stannis and Davos are if you watched them early, you’re not going to know a lot of the voice over characters if you watch them early, you’d not grasp the information as much as you are able to watching it after the season and you’ll have more questions. Why would you be interested in the voice overs and back stories from Davos and Stannis if you have no context of who they even are?

35:20 I don't know how you can say that. Theon was being punished for his dads actions, but Ned (and probably Robert) chose to take a child hostage. That doesn't mean they're bad for this. It's just standard practice in Westeros, but they do share blame.

The Targaryens unified and ruled the Seven Kingdoms for 300 years. Before that, the kingdoms were constantly at war for thousands of years. The Targaryens ended all this.
Minus the civil war (Dance of Dragons which was not actually started by the Targaryens but a different house) and the Blackfyre Rebellions they brought stability and prosperity to the kingdoms.
They did things like build roads, created a single code of law (ending barbaric practices like lords having the right to take the virginity of women from their lands who were getting married), promoted relations and trade between the kingdoms, ended piracy, promoted religious tolerance (and outlawing religious extremists) and gave rights to widows.
The Mad King doesn't represent all 3 centuries of Targaryen rule. The beginning of his reign was prosperous and he wasn't mad then. But circumstances (like being held captive for months) drove him into insanity.
It is also important to point out that before the Targaryens when there were seven independent kingdoms there were bad rulers in those houses that ruled them too including the Starks whom everyone thinks were some saints who can't step a toe out of line. Ned Stark was actually an anomaly in terms of his honour. The other Starks were not like him. There were great leaders and poor leaders with them too - same as the Targaryens.
When Robert took the throne it did shatter the status quo and cause chaos because the Targaryens were the ones who unified and built the Seven Kingdoms as a single realm. You can see this from, e.g., the Iron Islands rebelling against Robert after the Targaryen dynasty collapsed.
I will say one more thing. Brandon Stark brought his death on himself. He was a moron and too rash. He barged into the Red Keep and demanded Rhaegar, the literal heir to the throne, "come out and die." That is literally treason. Yes, his intentions were to save his sister but he was an idiot the way he went about it. What happened to his father, Rickard Stark, was unjust though.

58:03 You know who Ser Gregor Clegane is! Season 1. The Mountain is the big big guy at the tourney who chopped Ser Loras' horse's head off, and would've killed Loras, but the Hound (Sandor Clegane, Gregor's brother) stopped him by fighting him, until King Robert told them to cut it out. Sandor stopped immediately and knelt, but the Mountain could barely control himself, then stomped away in a big-time hissy fit, and Robert let him go.
Later, when Ned was the Hand, sitting on the Iron Throne, a farmer came and said there were people vandalizing the countryside, and Middlefinger recognized the description of one of the marauders as the Mountain, and so Ned stripped Ser Gregor of all his lands and titles, and sent a group of knights to go get him.
The famous line spoken by Ned Stark was regarding this situation: "I cannot give you back your homes, or restore your dead to life, but perhaps I can give you justice in the name of our King, Robert."

It's totally okay to watch this show without the fully understanding everything, you will still put it all together and figure it out. - No spoilers in the H&L. They prepare you for the season by telling you things that have happened, not things that will happen.
    - King Robert moving Stannis to Dragonstone was not necessarily a dis. Historically and traditionally Dragonstone is the home to the heir to the throne. Robert had no children and Stannis was the heir. Renly was then next in line to be Lord of the Stormlands.
    - Robert and Ned taking Theon as a hostage against further aggression is basically the same thing Aerys did with Jaime.
    - Margaery totally insinuated that the Tyrells convinced the Gardeners to fight a losing war against Aegon and the dragons. And who benefited? The Tyrells. Sneaky.
    - The Iron Born have the same mindset as several other groups we have met. The Wildlings. The hill tribes of The Vale. The Doth Raki. Even Danaerys herself.
    - House of the Dragon is 170 years before GoT. The Targaryans didn't fall until Danaerys's father.

I definitely would watch these lore videos after each season. You are completely lost if you watch these before, you won't even recognize the actor's voices. I think this is how they were intended to watch and I know no-one who watched them before the actual show. I think if you don't recognize the actors and don't know how the acted in the show you wouldn't enjoy the lore videos to the same extent.

Aerys was bad because he voided his oaths as King by murdering a bunch of nobles who had a legitimate legal grievance against his family when it was duty to meet out justice on their behalf. Essentially
The Targaryens as a whole United a continent that had spent almost 10,000 years in continuous warfare with itself and brought growth, prosperity and peace minus the Balckfyre rebellions and the Dance of the Dragons
The moment the Targaryens were deposed everything began to destabiliz. So you're both right in a sense.

Y'all forget that Robert and Ned were raised together by Jon Arryn in the Vale. So they were kinda like brothers, maybe closer since they lived together. And some of what you say u didn't know was kinda divulged but you have to really listen to all the dialogue in this show, there is hardly any conversation had in this that is "meaningless". There were things that I didn't catch until I watched a 2nd time. Pause when u talk during taping😂

  • @user-kt2ko6vt2q
    @user-kt2ko6vt2q Рік тому +2

I don't think it really matters before or after, cause (I'm pretty sure) they don't give spoilers. Context before, or context after -- it's personal preference. But if you find out they give spoilers (or even that they might give spoilers), DON'T watch them! At least not while you're sweet summer children, which you'll think you're not anymore at some point, but you won't know nothing yet. You gotta wait til WE tell you you're not sweet summer children any more, then you can do what you wanna .
But I think for me it's better to watch afterwards. It's like when you're a kid and you've got your aunties and uncles and grandparents and all your family and the people you know -- you just know them for who they are right now. It's not til later when you're grown some, that you start hearing the stories that made each one of them who they are, or that you even know enough about life to understand the stories: Like who had an affair one time; how your one auntie who works as a waiter was class valedictorian in high-school; about your uncle who died that you never even knew about, is actually the reason some people look sad sometimes; why so-and-so never really got along with such-and-such; where that scar on uncle so-and-so's hand came from; the story behind that ring your cousin never takes off; how your mother was married before your dad (whaaa!?!); that your other cousin was adopted...
It's the unfolding that makes the story a little bit magic, and gives each character even more depth. It's like you get a good dose of your own first impression before you get the backstory. Then you're like OOOOH!!!
GRRM tells the stories in the books the same way: you might meet a character, and it's not til way later that you might hear something about them from a different character: maybe you'll put two and two together, maybe not! Or the other way around: someone might mention someone you don't know at all, then later you meet them, and you don't remember they were mentioned before, but you have SOME kinda feeling about them. It's like a feeling of intuition, but by design. I guess that's why a good writer's characters feel so alive. They've dropped hints and nuggets and easter eggs, that you barely pick up on, but it leads you to develop an impression of a person or a situation, and you're not even sure you understand why you're thinking like that.
