True, he had to sound half-way decent because The Voice screens contestants before they're selected to audition. We've seen some awful performances on American Idol, but that's their shtick. We've viewed some okay singing on The Voice, but never someone who is really terrible. I still wonder if they all knew from the beginning they were being punked.
He made it sound like someone less talented was actually trying - and that is effing hard to do. Imitating a great lack of skill/talent comically is very simple, but imitating a slight lack of skill/talent believably, that is really hard to pull off.

Cynical people always tend to assume everything that goes on on TV is scripted or fake. I would just say that unless you are a Broadway fan or HIMYM fan, you wouldn't recognize NPH's voice that easily.
Because they have come across HUNDREDS of auditions where the contestants sound similar to an actor, or a singer, but they're not them. So why would they suspect it was NPH?

I wouldn't describe it as nasty, but definitely thrown off. NPH was being intentionally weird with a slightly creepy vibe. When you're not expecting it, it's hard to check your own knee jerk reaction. Since that was the kind of NPH's aim, I'm sure he found it comical.

The real AHG host recognized him. You could see it in his expression and how he tried not to laugh with this joy in his eyes. The coaches could tell something was off, and knew **something** was going to happen. They were waiting for that ball to drop and left confused from the interview when it didn’t.
He's being flat on purpose (not using vibrato). Also he's singing with the nose and being extremely dramatic with the twirls. He sings ok here. But the lyrics, twirls and flat notes are a bit too much. Hahaha.

The real AHG host recognized him. You could see it in his expression and how he tried not to laugh with this joy in his eyes. The coaches could tell something was off, and knew **something** was going to happen. They were waiting for that ball to drop and left confused from the interview when it didn’t.

That's because you do not have a good ear.
He's being flat on purpose (not using vibrato). Also he's singing with the nose and being extremely dramatic with the twirls.
He sings ok here. But the lyrics, twirls and flat notes are a bit too much. Hahaha.
@@Mesicku It is possible to sing on key without vibrato. Vibrato is only used to amplify the voice. People were singing without vibrato before opera, which necessitated its invention due to the need of amplification and lack of electronics.
@@AdamFloro Ah, you're right. Thank you for correcting me. English isn't actually my first language, so I translated poorly. Maybe the right word would be monotone or plain, instead of flat.
@@Mesicku Since what we're used to hearing is singers using vibrato, one might call it "plain singing" or simply "boring". I agree that it doesn't sound as pleasant, even if on key. Vibrato makes singing sound better, which is why it is still used even though we now have other means of amplification.
