This artist is well known in the UK to people with children reading the popular reading scheme, Oxford Reading Scheme. I get the impression from the vids it is worldwide in popularity too.
I can’t tell you how much l enjoy your videos and your wonderful advice.....in the 1960s l loved drawing and painting especially for children....l longed to illustrate for children’s books and in particular to assist in education of children with special needs....but life was much more austere then and life took a more practical route.....here l am in my seventies....what am l doing?....drawing for my grandchildren and in particular using illustrations for my young non verbal autistic grandson in an effort to help him to be able to communicate ( and yes...we’re having littles successes daily) what l love is your advice and encouragement that using methods to correct mistakes isn’t cheating ....back then so much was regarded as cheating when really, all we were doing was practising to be better....love you Mr Shoo!
Wow three books at one time! I'm working on my first children's book at the moment and i could not imagination working on three at one time! I also just wanted to say Shoo Rayner that you inspired me to self publish my own children's book. I just wanted to say thank you!
Thanks Shoo and Alex for that fascinating information you are very kind to let people know the techniques you use to produce those lovely illustrations. I love the idea of "dad" doing the colouring, how sweet. I am working hard with my drawing skills thanks to your videos, Shoo. Thanks again.
That's very interesting Shoo. I'd love to see you do a quick video explaining the limitations of reproduction colours. I've no idea what colours are affected or why. Great video upload by the way. The subject of paper stretching was interesting. I've had lots of problems in that area. I'm now trying Bristol 'board' paper with gentle watercolour 'drybrushing' on dry paper and, using Copic Markers. I'm also giving Derwent colour pencils (Inktense) a go. it's a long winded & painstaking!
:-) It definitely kept her engaged! You must have the best job in the world. I'd love to write and illustrate for children. Bye wasn't quite sure whether Alex used inks or watercolours to colour his illustrations :-(
Way Cool... I was wondering if you could show how to change to the printing colors from computer colors, or more on how or what its about? I have an idea on a comic book, if you ever get the time, lol... Thanks
the way you teach things is maybe a little bit childish, but i love it XD it really sounds like you are having fun while you are drawing and it is really enjoyable to watch. keep up the good work!
BTW Shoo, we've been watching your vids for a couple of weeks and by coincidence my daughter came home with a reading book written and illustrated by your good self! It was one of the Olympia books and my seven year old was engrossed :-)
I hate to float my own boat but I've been drawing like this simple line caricature style for years and I find it easy to do, but I suck at painting or anything else. I draw my own story books and sketches but how do you get work with something like that as an illustrator or anything like that?
Shoo, Thanks for posting this video. I aspire to be a children's book illustrator one day and am inspired by both you and Alex. I have a question. I love doing watercolor illustration. What kind of paper do you and Alex use? Alex seems to be using a paper that is thinner than typical watercolor paper. Thanks in advance for any info!
Alex Brychta is in a book and I know he made biff and chip and kipper books and his life and first he was born in a country I forgot a lot of it but he was born in a different country and a bad thing happend to his school so his parents gone to another school with him and his sister and when he grew up someone wanted to look for a artist and they gone on beach together and they made a sand floppy! I know that it's in a book
If the illustrator used a palette of the 4-color process colors mixed together instead of using other paints... Wouldn't the final printed illustration look more like the original?

I love how Alex draws so fast and it's still so good! Those were my favourite books when I was younger
