If you read the "about" section on the TVFilthyFrank channel, he basically states that Filthy Frank is a satrical representation of everything that's wrong with social media (and the internet in general), and never to attempt to try his acts in real life.
Joji (the Filthy Frank actor) is very much the opposite personality wise, and is politically left-leaning (he's recently shown support for the BLM movement and LGBT rights).
He retired from doing comedy and makes music now. If you watch his music videos (on his 'Joji' UA-cam channel), it's hard to believe these two are the same person.

If there's one thing a lot of feminists have in common is being offended and/or lacking humor instead of looking at things as they are. There's no reason to approach this video as seriously or giving examples of how bad what's presented in it may be as she did. If there's one thing I'm confused about it's the fact that she's genuinely surprised at the backlash she's gotten so far. Well, no shit - you're approaching a satirical topic with academic level of dissection, meaning you've missed the point completely. If there's anything people may dislike you for it's definitely not for being a feminist, rather simply this stringent approach to the content presented.
You specify several times that you are aware this is satire or a parody, yet choose not to approach it as one. I mean no wonder people aren't fans of your reaction to Frank, as it comes off needlessly serious for the level of obvious cringe the video presented is.
Baffling a bit, but then again it was to be expected, as many feminists take this approach, yet they all wonder why their reception is so harsh. It's like, put 2 and 2 together, lol.

ngl, as a fan of frank's videos, as someone who understands that it's all a big joke from half a decade ago(his newest content anyway) to almost a decade ago(his really early stuff), it's cool to actually see someone who will address *why* his jokes are so offensive. George Miller(the actual actor behind Frank) has said that Frank is everything a person should NEVER be, but a lot of people that are fans of Frank seem to forget that it's satire, i've seen people who take him way too seriously and try to be like him so, it's actually really nice to see a breakdown of his content like this. like yeah it's a joke, but not every joke will be funny forever, sometimes things are just too dark. when i was like 12 or so everyone thought "kill yourself loser" was funny, but now all of us have grown up and we understand that telling people to kill themselves isn't funny at all. i feel like in 10 years or so people will look back at Filthy Frank in general and go "wow that's really fucked up, people should really not act like this even as a joke" because some of his jokes really are too dark or go too far. it's really kind of sad that a video like this needs to exist in order for people to get the message that Frank isn't a role model, but that's the society we live in unfortunately.
absolutely wonderful video. i'll definitely be subscribing and tuning in in the future.
edit: I forgot to mention that George himself grew up in Japan for a large part of his childhood, so he's probably very well aware of how awful this advice really is.

I enjoyed frank's humor in my teens before he quit, I think it was mostly the shock value that made me and others laugh. That being said this video made me realize that just because it was satire doesn't mean it can't be harmful; there had to have been at least a handful of people who took his advice too seriously.
In retrospect perhaps the "frank" character would have been better if Joji had put more explicit emphasise on just how terrible his actions and words were, perhaps each video could have had frank getting some comeuppance or learning a lesson on how he was wrong.

When I watch a Filthy Frank video, I immediately understand that hes playing a character. His professional music with 88 rising is amazing and his channel dehumanized himself to the point when he wanted to talk to his fanbase on a serious level they formed a negative response to it. That's the main reason he quit is because people liked his character but disliked when he broke the perspective. Joji and Frank are completely 2 different people in my mind, and I am obsessed with the idea that he is a famous celebrity that is super kind and supportive, with a past UA-cam channel with a character portraying extremely dark and explicit comedy that purposely offended multiple classes of people in the light of comedy. Few people were able to stand up against the rising "censoring" and society became more and more bland. Frank demonstrated to the world that no matter who you are, we are all human, and he reminded us of our roots. By crudely making highly offensive jokes in this persona he made a life lesson to all of us to ensure that we arent taken down by a word, by an insult. That's why I think he was known as "The greatest youtuber of all time" because hes character was quite literally the worst, which made a situation that benefitted and enlightened an entire generation, which made him the best.

    Personal my thoughts are
    a) Joking about Parkinson’s or saying “Gib me da p*ssy” isn’t necessarily offensive within context. People don’t want to be ridiculed, but they also don’t want to walk on eggshells or have other people walk on eggshells around them. Humor can be a way for people to cope with their problems and conditions, even if it is crude. Frank has another video which exemplifies that with his wheelchair friend with cerebral palsy, he makes fun of his wheel chair and makes some jokes about his condition, but the guy claps back and acts like just another one of Franks friends. He’s not pitied, he’s not made the butt of the joke, he’s just another one of the guys. It’s all about context. Walking up to a stranger and saying “Echi Shiyouze” is offensive, but if I walked up to a longtime friend and said it, and they understand I’m joking, that’s different.
It might just be a cultural thing. I grew up in America and if you don’t learn how to “roast” and “clap back” you’re going to have a hard time making friends. It’s all very person specific and if you can pull it off so you and your friend are aware it’s just a joke, then you just really enjoy yourself, but if one person is not into it and the other is really into it, then that changes everything. You have to be empathetic enough to understand when.
    b) That said, a lot of what Frank did was pretty off and it’s insane how he’s just let off the hook for things other people get crucified for. He has videos of himself harassing people in public, stopping traffic, running into restaurants and stores and yelling, running into a picnic and knocking off all their stuff on a table, going up to a couple and asking if he could kiss the girl etc.. he also sort of seems to encourage his viewers to harass some of the haters in his hater replies videos. It’s satire, sure, but he’s still doing it, ostensibly to people who didn’t agree to be a part of it. That’s not a real excuse and UA-camrs who do that stuff nowadays are rightfully ridiculed, hell ignoring the forest episode, it basically what Logan Paul did in his trip to Japan.
Point is that he just does offensive shit and just says “it’s just a prank bro” and because he made fun of other people who did that he’s let off the hook.

Ah yes a feminist who does not have a sense of humor or does not know what satire is lol. as a European I would suggest to author of this video to embrace japanese culture and traditions which are thousands years old, rather following some neo-liberal ideology which comes from a country with history of 200 years.

Thank you. As much as I've enjoyed his comedy and watching others doing the same everything you said needed to be said. You can't assume everyone who watches it actually knows the things you are pointing out here. Quite the opposite, I know there are far too many ignorant humans out there, some at least partly because the education you are trying to put out there is almost non existent but also because some just don't care to know. Comedy is comedy, but maybe instead of just brushing aside the concerns even just a little banner at the start reminding people that it is actually comedy, and not something to be acted upon ever, wouldn't go astray.

I do have a question? If my English name is kayla but if I ever go to Japan is it okay to use my name in Japanese? Is that considered wrong? My Japanese name translated from kayla would be Kaira. I just want to make sure I’m not disrespecting the culture if I decide to use that name instead of my English name if I ever decided to go to Japan.

In my opinion, the people who were upset that you did not immediately recognize this as dark satire and decided to leave rude comments are themselves foolish. I have seen many reaction videos from Japanese people and while some of them do realize it is humor, it doesn't quite make "sense" because why would it? It is a controversial form of humor from a very different culture. Also, a "react" video by nature will often not have a proper context because by definition when you first react to something you are looking at something shocking without any context beforehand.
I had a professor tell me about the time he worked at a Japanese company, and did not receive his boss' business card with two hands. It's infamous now among people who take an interest in Japan with some intention tentative or not to work there, but this was sometime in the 90's when there weren't viral videos about business card culture. A lot of Americans also don't "get" many aspects of Japanese culture and irritate Japanese when they go to Japan. To the extent Japanese don't like or don't "get" foreign humor in a foreign language, many foreigners also do not understand Japanese social rules and humor.
Speaking to the topic of this video, when disagreeing or misunderstanding it is framed as an "SJW thing" regardless of who is the person reacting to the video, it's obvious the person is coming from a perspective charitable to a specific, modern Western mindset.
There is an amusing paradox where people enjoy having a sense of humor that "normies" or "NPCs" don't get, while also being frustrated about not being understood by those around them. I'm not very aware of niches in Japan but perhaps there's some equivalent with the ability to understand inside jokes within a community being a sign that someone is part of an in group.
I'm not saying these things can't be understood by outsiders, though. Conversely, Americans can learn keigo and sonkeigo or humor based on homonyms with different kanji/meanings as well, but it would be silly to expect that to be automatic.
Also, I would add (I've spoken too much probably) that George is himself Japanese, speaks Japanese, and left after he was an adult. So he must be aware of Japanese reactions to humor and knew people were going to think he's crazy.

Thank you so so much for this wonderful, thoughtful, and kind comment! Indeed, this was only the second video I'd ever watched from Filthy Frank (the first one was the Weaboos one) but unfortunately my "reaction" wasn't appreciated by a few people, haha.
What confuses me is this mindset some people have that "wokeness" or "westernness" is something unique to... well, the "west"? There are plenty of "woke" Japanese people, I just happen to make content in English, haha.
Again, thank you so so much for your comment, I really appreciate it!!

like if you know these are jokes and you don't take them seriously, why do you need to explain every joke like you would take them seriously? like it's like someone at a stand-up comedy club saying after every joke "that's offensive". everybody gets they are telling jokes. if you don't like the joke, you don't need to like it, but you don't need to tell everyone that you don't.

I appreciate that, considering you disagree with the character's language and sense of humour, that you are not attacking him as a person. The way you explain why certain things are distasteful is refreshing. As a woman, myself, I personally find filthy frank extremely funny. I understand that he is parody, and so his distasteful nature does not affect me. I agree, in reality, that hitting on women and treating them as objects is not funny. But I, also, understand that this is a type of humour that not everyone finds funny. So I wanted to commend you on explaining why you do not find it funny, without demonizing him specifically.

It’s different in the way that the social movements that drive them is different. Socially speaking, the US and Japan are in very different places-the US is becoming more accepting and there’s this understanding that equality is a goal, whereas in Japan there’s still a very systematically rooted status quo, but with many, small, organized efforts to drive change 😁
