Excited about the new channel. I love that you guys are constantly trying new things and creating great content the whole time. Keep up the great work.
I bought one in 2008 and still own it and still love it. The slipper clutch is not for going over rocks it's for when you downshift for deceleration so your rear wheel doesn't lock up. And that little switch underneath the seat that adjusts your power settings also. You can go from a low end to a nice street or a full-out race I have a switch on the handlebars so I can switch it on the Fly. Love you Roman love your Jeep and your car reviews but your motorcycle ones are a little weak
Ok so I’ve been following you guys on trucks. But I had no idea you did bikes as well. Jeez. You guys are kicking ass and putting out the info mpg I’m constantly looking for. Thank you guys so much. Very very impressed with your channel
I haven't ridden the 690 but I own a Husqvarna 701. I've measured between 49 and 63MPG, 49 being a tank mostly off-road and 63 being mostly state highways. Top speed is well over 100 and it gets there quick. That said the 701 has the new LC5 engine with about 10% more HP, in addition to the added counterbalance and a few other updates. I hear the 690 has better low-end torque than the 701.
The worst mpg I've gotten on my '15 is is the mid 40s with hard off road riding. Usually 52-54 ridding a mix of pavement and gravel. Best was in the 70s cruzing around the Smokey Mountains. I got the wings exhaust this spring. Save weight, runs way cooler, and sounds great. Totally worth it.
Luke moto caution?? Ktms dominate the cross country circuit, are producing fuel injected 2 strokes, and have won the Dakar rally more than any other bike. They’re more expensive than Japanese bikes for a reason.
I used to use quads and dirt bikes a lot, but after pushing it a bit too far (and hitting middle age), I hardly ever do so now. Still, I can't lie that watching this vid reeeeeeeeeally makes me want to get back into it. Oh, the 0-60 run was about 7.5 seconds.
slipper clutches only slip on deceleration. thats a clutch line and yes they are both steel braided (hydraulic). pretty sure the dial under the seat is a map switch, nothing to do with ocatane. its just different levels of performance. position 1 might be for bad gas (whatever that means) and two and three are different ignition maps and the rest I believe dont do anything.
dirtrider88 Yup, this reviewer doesn’t know what he’s talking about, slipper clutch doesn’t help you “get up those big rocks” like he said. The slipper clutch is so you don’t lock up the back wheel when downshifting, because the big 690 has a lot of engine braking.
Been watching your reviews for years and always enjoyed them. I rode the White Rim trail back in 1971 on my Suzuki 250 savage 2 stroker. We had to pack a extra gallon of gas to make it round trip from Dead Horse Point it was a very long day back then. Last time I rode it on my DRZ400 in 2002. Made it back to camp by 2:30 in the afternoon and hadn't hit reserve. Legs still felt like rubber for a couple days. hehehe I was living in Arvada Co. and used to also ride Rampart range. Trail 10 Top of the World was my favorite trail then. I would Park at the Chatfield Dam inlet and we always had to stop at the sprucewood bar for Chilli before calling it a day. I'm guessing you did all that too. Hope you get lot's of smiles and miles on your KTM
The WINGS exhaust cures a lot of issues with the 690. Good service from WINGS as well. Just have to wait for the order to arrive. More power, better sound, and less heat. Seat Concepts also fixes that board wrapped in vinyl that KTM provides.
Very cool to see a review of a motorcycle! Suggestion if you guys can get a KLX 250 to review. There are only a couple reviews for this bike and it was refreshed almost a year ago. Love this channel!
Nice bike! I wish Honda would bring back the XR650R (water cooled Baja Champion in its day) but ADD electric start! The 650L hasn't been updated in years!
I think the Honda and the KLR650 can’t be changed; they were grandfathered in when the emissions laws were applied to bikes. I suspect the market for a ~650cc liquid-cooled thumper with quality suspension is kinda small, or at least not big enough, for the big Japanese makers to get involved.
@TLFoffroad pull off the left hand white radiator shroud section. At least on the newer ktm 690's, there is a small tool bag behind it which is recessed into the black plastic with the rubber band.
The Weird dail under the seat: Poor Quality fue mode is at position Zero, 1 is soft throttle map, 2 is medium throttle map and 3 is advanced throttle mapping. Also the adjustment indicator is not on the dial but on the side. you will see a white line. 4-9 is basically just spare mapping positions. I've had plenty of bikes but the KTM 690 Enduro R is my favorite bike ever. Does everything I want it to do. Sand even.
Just rode the 690, 3000 km in Romania, that seat sure makes one stand up 👍🏼 Note: The dial under the seat 0-3 is for engine mapping, huge difference in power distribution. Enjoy
Excellent video man. Very informative. I'm new to 690 and loving it. Been doing a bunch of vids on it showing how we set it up for both touring and for short riders. You look pretty tall. Us short guys have a challenge with it. I learned some good tips with this vid. Thanks.
Get rid of that locking gas cap or carry a second key. Replace with an Acerbis. Dirt will get in key slot and the key may not open the cap when you are muddy in the middle of nowhere needing to fill the tank. My key snapped in the gas tank lock less than a mile from home. Had to walk home for another key. After market seat is a good idea. Great brakes. Great acceleration. A little choppy at low RPMs. Got one when they were introduced.
TFL Offroad, yikes. Nice, I have follow your other channels for some time, I am a truck guy. But next to my truck is a 690 KTM and now my son in law now has a new one after riding mine. OH, I have been riding dirt my whole life, I am 69 and this is my 6th Katoom. May upgrade to the 790 next year but I am not tall, lowered my KTM 690, rides great, chow. Parker, CO
I'm rockin a low mileage '95 KTM 620, left side kickstart only. I upgraded the carb to a 42mm flat slide which makes it 1000 times easier to start. But I feel your pain on that.. Kicking in 90-100 degree heat isnt fun either lol
Had a 2014 690 set up for off road, really powerful but too peaky, front end washed out coz the weight is towards the back. Riding technical stuff in the UK it's too powerful, but the wide flat trails in US it's the one to have, or the FE 701. Got an FE450 now though!,
Awesome! Huge TFL fan. Been waiting for a series like this from you guys. Wishing I was the one doing the riding haha. Let me know if you want to use my 1290 super adv R to do a review? I'll bring it to you.
Nice review. I would love to see a review head to head with a 500exc. I think the extra weight of the 690 would be very apparent next to the 500 particularly in the tight stuff.
Very cool to see bike reviews. You should do a bike shootout with a lower end dual sport and spend the price difference in mods to see how they stack up.
It needs just a tiny bit more range for it to make sense to me, luckily there are a handful of aftermarket options for that. Can't wait to graduate and get that bread so I can finally get on a bike made in this century.
What's the warranty on KTM 'bikes ? You surprised me ROMAN,..I thought first as you entered the video,.." geez Stephen is not that tall!!" These bike's are super fun,..great video, b.t.w. I timed the run as well as I could on my stop watch,..I got 7:55 seconds, zero to 60!
Dan and the Boys context is everything. In the middle of talking about the brakes he referenced the steel braiding. For instance, if I were talking about how hot my date was last night and how good she was in bed, then I said your mom’s dress looked nice. Then you’d rightfully assume from contextual awareness that I was referring to your mom.
Luke moto poor baby! I forgot to put a trigger warning before saying the hydraulic line was for the clutch and not the brake. Luckily for you costco sells tampons in bulk year round... go forth and cure your crimson menace... role tide!
Nice video Roman, as always. I have the same bike, but I'm much shorter than you, at 5'8" with an inseam of 30.5" Still, I can ride this bike, tip toeing... Just saying, for shorter riders who are wondering if they can ride this tall bike... (Typical european bike, where the guys look like they are 7'2".........) Extremely fun bike to ride... 95 miles on it yesterday, sore butt today, but I still have my smile...
Very nice. I like those & the *KTM Dukes* and the new Husky FE versions. I had the Husqvarna TR650 Terra (updated bmw 650GS) before KTM bought them out (yet right after BMW). They were slightly under the same Hp to weight and it was way to much power for any decent offroad with the longer gearbox. I agree on the mileage range, maybe aftermarket might have a oversize tank option, like they do for the hybrid MX versions ( ktm Xc, husky fx, Yamaha yz250fx, honda crf450rx) *As for the seat just have it shaved then a soft gel put in, is usually a cheap option*
How does this bike compare in size to a KLR650 for a larger rider? I'm 6'2" 173 and the KLR is quite comfortable. Just toying with the idea of a KTM like the one you are showing or it's big brother the Adventure. My KLR is fun but is a tank off road. Can't get to crazy on it. I was shocked that it would not pull the front tire off the ground in second gear. Only 1st and that's with a bit of clutching and slight pull back. I would like to be able to pull the front end up with ease but I don't want a bike that feels small to my size. What would you think about the new Adventure 1090? Anyone free to respond please. :)
I actually prefer the small slim tank and if I go far I'll just strap a 2 1/2 gallon tank to the back. I want one of these pretty bad, just can't afford it right now. I'll have one someday. This is my dream bike, this and the Beta 500RR-S. I actually prefer this bike though and this year the 2017. I dont like the way the newer ones look. I'm trying to buy a used 2008 XR650L right now, I can actually afford it which is nice because I like the XR650L and 2008 is my favorite year of it so it's cool that I found one.
I also own this bike 2017 model, the dial under the seat is a throttle map 0 is for bad gas one is a rain mode kind of makes the throttle smooth and soft 2 is a standard performance setting and 3 through 9 is the same and puts out the most power most responsive throttle input.. it's interesting going from map 1 to map 2 and then noticing the dramatic difference going to map 3 the throttle gets super sensitive
i been debating on a xt 250 or honda 250 crfl or rally then i rode a KTM690 2010 .......I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR ATRAIL BIKE TO RIDE WITH KIDS ON THE FOUR WHEELER AND I CAN GET THE KTM FOR THE COST OF THE XT AND CRF .... o ican stand over but tip toe can this be lowered alittle
I used to say KTMs and Husqvarnas were too expensive, but the upcoming Honda 450L is going to be $10.4k. $9k for a brand new 690 doesn't seem too bad. I am still leary of KTM reliability and maintenance, but I hear they are better than they used to be. Like with anything, take care of it, and it should last.
Same dilemma ive had. Got the shits with Honda marketing telling me 8 months before the 450 was even released. Expensive bike, bought the 690 enduro and absolutely hate it.
I’d like to get some information on the maintenance for KTM/Husqvarna. I like the modern drivetrain, but don’t want to be wrenching on it more than I’m riding it.
More skill and your 0-60 time will be much shorter, though dirt is certainly going to limit traction and times. I enjoyed my 690, rallied it but ultimately it isn't as capable as a true enduro, still falls into the DS category but definitely has off road pedigree. Its a bit heavy and the turning radius isn't up to snuff and unfortunately in 2009 (I think it was 2009) KTM took an inch out of the suspension. Still that motor, what a gem. Open terrain riding where you can open it up is just about as much fun as you can have with your pants on. 100% agree about that exhaust, get ride of it right away, chokes the bike up and it is incredibly hot. Older models you could play with the tune with tuneecu and richen it up as it runs way way to lean.
I honestly think you need more knowladge on bikes before you review a bike: -Steel braided lines are for brake fade(no flex) not for endurance, and the line you show was a clutch line. -KTM is not a German brand. -Doing 0-60 runs on dirt shows nothing about bike performance but how well is your rear tire and throttle controll are.
Soulhunter Agreed. Watching him roll his wrist while shifting tells me a lot. Nice enough guy, no beef there but not completely up to an expert status reviewer.
The '17> 701 has more power, better suspension and tighter turning circle - it's a better bike. There is an updated 690 on the way though (probably an orange 701).
If the 690 were 9000 instead of 11-12k, I'd buy it. Until then, I'll stick with the DR650. I bought a mint used DR with 300 miles for $3800. A 690 in that condition would be $8,0000 or more.
I just got a 2020 690 smc r for $8000 used with 760 miles on her! Ofc there is tax and license and dealership fee in top of that. It was a little splurgey. My brother wants one now i recommended drz 400 as a discount buy. I love the 6000 mile maintenance interval on the 690 tho. (I will never wait that long)
That “weird” fuel adjuster under the seat is for changing the fuel Mapping and low octane fuel adjust meant is only part of what it does. Maybe you should read your manual?
I want one so bad because the 65hp seems plenty adequate for the highway, however i want it specifically for single bike trail riding..now i know a wr250 is boss for trail riding but it sucks on the highway.. i guess i just gott test ride one
I have a 2017 KTM 690R enduro and 2027 XR650L but going to sell the KTM 690R because I'll get more money! I like the tachometer on '17 & '18s....but so much tech like the 1-10 engine map under the seat. And cant really upgrade the gas tank. Thus sold my KTM 690R and kept the XR650L which is Uncorked and is better on road....the KTM 690R blows it away 0-60 but no weight over front end....thus speed wobbles. I'm 6'3 240lbs... so I can handle the BRP (XR650L) and the aftermarket for XR650 is huge.
FYI, 2:07 A slipper clutch isn't any different on acceleration. It's a tool for not skidding the rear as much under engine braking
Excited about the new channel. I love that you guys are constantly trying new things and creating great content the whole time. Keep up the great work.

Just a little note, KTM isn't german. It is from Austria.
TheViolentPixie wherever it's from it's not a Japanese so as always caution
Yeah lol. German? 0-60 was pretty bad hehe but well there is a vid...
"Anschluß" 2.0 here we go again
Australian
Luke moto caution?? Ktms dominate the cross country circuit, are producing fuel injected 2 strokes, and have won the Dakar rally more than any other bike. They’re more expensive than Japanese bikes for a reason.
a review on a dirt bike riding the gravel straight - VERY informative

A review I can most definitely identify with. Kudos Roman and the TFL gang. 👍

yes the position 1 on the dial under the seat is for gas under 95 degrees of octane = bad gas.
I own a 2017 and agree with you guys.

Nice work Roman, as I am now 59 years old these type of bikes seem appealing. Not sure I want to wrestle 600 lb , 1200's off road!
The WINGS exhaust cures a lot of issues with the 690. Good service from WINGS as well. Just have to wait for the order to arrive. More power, better sound, and less heat. Seat Concepts also fixes that board wrapped in vinyl that KTM provides.
jrschrum the wings exhaust is also 5 pounds lighter. ua-cam.com/users/telerover
PowerPC. Couldn't aggre more I have a 2002 xr650r and I prefer riding it over my ktm 690.
Just realized I was thinking of the XR650L, not R.
that bike is the best ever
PowerPC I like my 650l, but I would have gone for a 650R in a heartbeat if it had electric start.
got $1500 and .99% APR on my 2018. loving it so far!
Rick Motorcycle
Still loving it?
What is the maintenance schedule like?
Would you still get the 690 if you had to do over?
Icon riding shoes! Hope they still make those. I had a pair about 6-7 years ago. Good quality and great style.
@TLFoffroad pull off the left hand white radiator shroud section. At least on the newer ktm 690's, there is a small tool bag behind it which is recessed into the black plastic with the rubber band.

I have decided to buy the KTM 690 Enduro R. Your comments helped me make this decision. Thanks!
@@grendelprime166 Good decision and congratulations! Just came back from a 1200mile ride into the sticks and back. No issues, had a blast!
So which mapping is better fuel and best for faster torque? Setting 3?
@@zackedwards7803 So if you want the most aggressive throttle mapping setting it's setting 3.
Just rode the 690, 3000 km in Romania, that seat sure makes one stand up 👍🏼 Note: The dial under the seat 0-3 is for engine mapping, huge difference in power distribution. Enjoy

Great details.
You left out the Suzuki dr650, is it not still available in the USA?
I have a 30 year old Dr 650 and it is still awesome!
I had a 2006 Honda XR650R but sold it. Would have kept it if it had the magic button - electric start. Kickstarting a cold 650r is NO fun.
I'm rockin a low mileage '95 KTM 620, left side kickstart only. I upgraded the carb to a 42mm flat slide which makes it 1000 times easier to start. But I feel your pain on that.. Kicking in 90-100 degree heat isnt fun either lol
I hope you are loving the bike. I ride a 2010 690 and I love it!
I get a solid 65 to 70 mpg on my 2017 at 60 to 65 mph. MPG goes down quick at higher speeds!
Great video. I haven't been on a motorcycle since I was a teenager but if I were to get one it would be an enduro.

Con 55 años Me baje de una Bmw gs 750 a esta bestia ktm690r y empecé a disfrutar la vida en todos los caminos: una maravilla como va!
Awsome man! Will be anxiously waiting the full review.
Awesome video Bro, but maybe consider some goggles or dualsport/shielded helmet...we need you doing more of these.
Awesome! Huge TFL fan. Been waiting for a series like this from you guys. Wishing I was the one doing the riding haha. Let me know if you want to use my 1290 super adv R to do a review? I'll bring it to you.
Roman, man you seemed at home talking about the bike, great review. KTM1190 ADV R owner
Ummm, the "brake" line you are pointing at is your Hydraulic clutch line. Brake is on the other side of the bike.
Also, that doodad under the seat also adjust for an off road map, regular map and aggressive map, it's in the manual
I just bought one of them, pretty accurate description.
Well this is something different, now do Black Bear Pass or the Cliffhanger with it.😊 0 - 60 in six seconds?
Great video. Keep the bike reviews coming! Can you get your hands on any street bikes? Yamaha, Harley, Indian, Honda, Ducati....
Nice review. I would love to see a review head to head with a 500exc. I think the extra weight of the 690 would be very apparent next to the 500 particularly in the tight stuff.

Off topic Roman, but I love those Icon boots. If I could buy another pair now I would.

My 2000 690 KTM is the same. Less abs. Sick bike. I’ve had it longer then 2 wifes
What happen to the longterm test ??? I am actually looking to get one and would appriciate that review!
2:03 On a 700, the slip is in the rear tire. Not the clutch.
What an awesome review! :D Love it!
But...but... where's the end of summer/long term review???
You said there would be a revew!
I really am looking forward to see your Review of the new KTM 790 adventure
Nice review Roman! But the bike is too small for you. KTM 790 or even more appropriate Yahama Tenere 700... You thoughts?
i been debating on a xt 250 or honda 250 crfl or rally then i rode a KTM690 2010 .......I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR ATRAIL BIKE TO RIDE WITH KIDS ON THE FOUR WHEELER AND I CAN GET THE KTM FOR THE COST OF THE XT AND CRF .... o ican stand over but tip toe can this be lowered alittle
Good video Roman. I hear KTM's are pretty high quality.
I had exceptional reliability with my lc4 640, adjust valves as scheduled and you're fine, except it's way too tall.
The KLR is probably the most road oriented dual sport of the Japanese 650's. So at the most I would give it a 50% road 50% dirt rating.
Ya I heard that too. 60-40 in favor of dirt for a KLR? I don’t think so
@@danielhicks5031 yeah I would say 65 percent road.
Pleasantly surprised to see you guys review the KTM 690. Nicely done.
Aaron Fink is that really the price for the 450L ?
MotoEMNK Yes, Honda has price and specs up on their site
Same dilemma ive had. Got the shits with Honda marketing telling me 8 months before the 450 was even released. Expensive bike, bought the 690 enduro and absolutely hate it.
@@simonchant761 You should have bought the Husky 701 ;-)
What is the brand Armour jacket you were wearing? Where did you purchase it? How much do they cost?
Tjhey cheap ass.
I’d like to get some information on the maintenance for KTM/Husqvarna. I like the modern drivetrain, but don’t want to be wrenching on it more than I’m riding it.
Hey the regular guy is back
Why does this bike cost about the same or less than a KTM 350cc exc-f dual sport?
I honestly think you need more knowladge on bikes before you review a bike:
-Steel braided lines are for brake fade(no flex) not for endurance, and the line you show was a clutch line.
Couldn't agree more with your comment.
Very good video !!!!
Let’s have a long term review!
The '17> 701 has more power, better suspension and tighter turning circle - it's a better bike. There is an updated 690 on the way though (probably an orange 701).
ATGATT! :) Nice review. I went with a UTV for my off-road fun these days. Arctic Cat/Textron Wildcat Trail.
Can’t wait for Nathan’s comments on this video!!
If the 690 were 9000 instead of 11-12k, I'd buy it. Until then, I'll stick with the DR650. I bought a mint used DR with 300 miles for $3800. A 690 in that condition would be $8,0000 or more.
I think one bike weighs a lot less The 690 goes 100mph 🤷
I just got a 2020 690 smc r for $8000 used with 760 miles on her! Ofc there is tax and license and dealership fee in top of that. It was a little splurgey. My brother wants one now i recommended drz 400 as a discount buy. I love the 6000 mile maintenance interval on the 690 tho. (I will never wait that long)
@TFL peeps, any update on this bike?
Good review.
Awsome! Let's have more!
That “weird” fuel adjuster under the seat is for changing the fuel Mapping and low octane fuel adjust meant is only part of what it does. Maybe you should read your manual?
Did you ever do a follow-up video to this one?
good review. doesn't seem like he has been riding very long
I want one so bad because the 65hp seems plenty adequate for the highway, however i want it specifically for single bike trail riding..now i know a wr250 is boss for trail riding but it sucks on the highway.. i guess i just gott test ride one
Used 690 costs as much as a used wr250. At like 1/3 the power. Sold the wr for the 690
I'll never understand why KTM put a close-ratio transmission in THIS of all bikes
They just put the same setup in the duke and enduro.
Holy shit! I just recognized Haystack. You're in Boulder! What trails are you riding?
We need the 1 year long term update!
It makes that knocky sound like my 450exc used to.
Someone has been watching Wranglerstar videos!!!!!!! ? Oh and your 0-60 on my watch was right at 12.5 seconds. Lol jk
How do you know they haven’t been watching TFL videos. We’ve been doing these for 10 years
What jacket is he wearing?it's awesome
nice work
I have a 2017 KTM 690R enduro and 2027 XR650L but going to sell the KTM 690R because I'll get more money!
Roman should try the xt250
