    On the length, I think it's appropriate that this is a film which not only is long but feels long. The Osage lived with the reign of terror for 5 years. We should be able to sit with a film about it for 3 hours.

    • @ER1CwC
      @ER1CwC 3 місяці тому +33

      The first time I watched it, I felt a huge sense of dread and frustration during the middle, before the FBI showed up: when is anyone going to do anything? I don’t think that the film would have conjured that feeling if it were shorter. I totally agree with you in that this is a film that is right to demand some effort from the viewer.

    • @NatalieGoldReacts
      @NatalieGoldReacts  2 місяці тому +34

      Definitely a fair point. I just know a lot of people (who aren't big cinema fans) that actually stopped watching the film because of it's length, or are hesitant to take the time to watch it at all. A lot of people don't want to take 3.5 hours to watch a movie, regardless of how great it is. I think this story is so important to share and I just want people to SEE IT! That's why I complain about the length.

    • @ER1CwC
      @ER1CwC 2 місяці тому +16

      @@NatalieGoldReacts People aren’t used to the length of epics anymore. Epic films used to be routinely 4 hours long - yes, with intermissions, but they could be quite short. I watched Lawrence of Arabia in a theater, and half of the audience had to run back to their seats. Interestingly though, I recall seeing an analysis of recent films, and the length of films is going up. Even Beau is Afraid and John Wick IV are very close to 3 hrs long.

      Wasn't a fan of this film because so little happens for such a long film.
      They tell us the main plot twist from the beginning and the rest of the film is just what we know will happen of them killing off the osage.
      The FBI investigation is what this film should've centred around because they have missed alot of it and would've been much more engaging imo

    • @ER1CwC
      @ER1CwC 2 місяці тому +16

      @@eyesonren It’s not about the plot. It’s about the relationship between Gladstone and Di Caprio. Also, Scorsese talks about how they made a decision to not make it about the investigation. They were stuck when they were still thinking terms of the investigation. They were interested in exploring emotions, not in conducting an intellectual exercise where someone solves a jigsaw puzzle.
      I guess this is the sort of film that just works for some and doesn’t work for others. For those of us who respond to the film, it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if it were about the investigation. This film gets better and better the more times one watches it and the more time one thinks about it. It’s not about the plot.

    I'm Navajo, and in a lot of native tribes a vision of an Owl is the harbinger of death. I was so glad to see that in the film.

    • @SorenAlba54
      @SorenAlba54 3 місяці тому +6

      Ah yes. I recall learning about it some time ago that to the Europeans, it is a knowledgeable and wise creature. To the Native Americans, however, it’s equivalent of seeing the Grim Reaper. I don’t blame them because as a nocturnal bird of prey that moves silently in the wind, it is a true being of the night. I’m not exactly a Native person myself but, if I was on the verge of death, the last thing I would like to see is a Barn Owl because I’ve always admired its beauty of soft and autumn colors on their plumage. Hence the symbol for my profile picture. If you know what they sound like, they’ll fit that bill perfectly. 🦉

The bird comes with no evil, no malice, just a mutual understanding you're not long for this world. The script was originally written for the focus to be on the FBI agent who comes to town and eventually helps to solve the murders, with DiCaprio playing that character. But Leo (correctly) felt that it would have been too much of a "white savior" type of film. He wanted the focus to be on the murders and the injustice that was done to the Osage. So the script was rewritten, with Leo taking the role of Ernest, and Jesse Plemons ended up playing FBI agent Tom White.

      A big criticism of the film is that it was from the white people’s perspective and not natives. So they are side characters in their own tragedy. And the movie kinda glossed over the Tulsa rights that happened in the same state in the same decade where they flew a plane over a black town and dropped a bomb from it and then shot and stabbed black, kids, women and men because the whites were angry they town was becoming so rich and black people had more money than them so had the goal to murder everyone black in Tulsa what was known as Black Wall Street because they were so rich.

    I'm part Osage, and when I saw this movie for the first time, I was so tense and angry. I felt like I had a steel plate in my chest. I left the theater feeling kinda spaced out and stayed that way until I went to bed.
    My grandpa never talked about the murders; I only learned about them about 5 years ago. And only a few months ago, I learned that my grandpa’s mom and grandma barely escaped from a man who broke into their house to murder them, so it makes sense why he never did.
    Also, something I thought was funny, and fucking insane, was when it became clear that the white people in this movie were not the “good guys”, a couple got up and walked out. Like??? What movie did you think y’all were at lmao? They clearly did zero research and just went to see the movie because it was filmed in and around our town. Racists are wild, man.

    I live in northern Oklahoma. Not Osage County itself, but not far away. This movie felt very real to me, with all the mentions of Fairfax, Ripley, Drumright, and other places that I've known all my life. I'm used to movies being set in far away places I've never seen. This felt more like the real world. I know some Osage, but I haven't had the guts to ask anyone if they'd lost any family members.
    The best Scorsese film I've seen is Hugo. I really think you would love it. New York, New York is underated, but it does drag in places. I think it's cool that Martin Scorsese is indirectly responsible for Frank Sinatra having his last hit a couple of years later.

    This was an amazing and thought provoking film. Speaking of which, this movie set multiple incredible Oscar records for some of it's cast and crew. These included:
    - Martin Scorsese becoming the oldest ever and second-most nominated Best Director nominee (10th nomination at age 81, with only 12-time Director nominee William Wyler having more nominations than him). Most notably, in Scorsese's case, 7 of his 10 Directing nominations came after he turned 60.
    - Lily Gladstone becoming the first ever person of Native American descent to be nominated in a lead acting category (I'm personally rooting for her to win).
    - Robert De Niro's Best Supporting Actor nomination for this film allowing him to break Katharine Hepburn's record for longest time span between first and most recent acting nom (De Niro now has 49 years separating his first (for GODFATHER PART II (1974)) and most recent (for KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (2023)) nomination to Hepburn's 48 years (in her case from MORNING GLORY (1933) to ON GOLDEN POND (1981))).
    - Robert De Niro AND Leonardo DiCaprio becoming joint recordholders for most acting appearances in Best Picture nominees with screen credit (this is the 11th credited appearance in a Best Picture nominee for each).
    - Film editor Thelma Schoonmaker becoming the most nominated and oldest ever Best Editing nominee (9th nomination at age 84).
    - Robbie Robertson becoming the 8th person to earn a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Original Score (he passed away in August 2023 at age 80, 2 months before this film's release).
    - Scott George becoming the first ever Osage Nation member to be nominated for an Oscar for this film (Best Original Song for "Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)").
    On a side note: It still blows my mind that both this movie and BARBIE share the same cinematographer (Rodrigo Prieto), with such incredible variety in both look and style.

      Good lord. Can we please get over the celebrations of "[insert name] is the first [insert race here] to [insert accomplishment here]". This is why race relations always suffer, we spend way too much time pointing out the differences and making race an important feature of an individual. It's not. The sooner people just ignore all that and treat everyone as human beings rather than treating them like they have some special quality because of their skin color or location of birth, the better.

    Hey, just in your intro, had to let you know: Scorsese has all kinds of movies, not just brutal dude stuff like Goodfellas, The Departed and Wolf Of Wall Street. There are lots of other kinds of classic Scorsese movies you'd probably love/like, be it "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" or "After Hours" or "The King Of Comedy" or "The Color Of Money" or "The Age Of Innocence" or "Kundun"; there isn't violence in any of those movies, one of them is a 19th century love story, one of them is a sort of feminist drama, one is the wildest, weirdest 80s comedy you'll ever see, etc etc. Scorsese is not just violence and cursing and putting unpleasant things in your face. I'm not saying do reactions to those movies (although King Of Comedy makes a great reaction video; so does After Hours), but in your own time, check out "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" or "the Age Of Innocence". "Kundun" is about the early life of the Dalai Lama. "Wolf Of Wall Street" is like a watered down, Wall Street version of Goodfellas, it's not in his top shelf of work, despite what some of these goofballs will tell you! 😛 Scorsese at his best is '73 - '95, not 21st century (although second-tier Scorsese is still ok/good, better than lots of other people's best! This is a good movie for him to end his career).

      I’ll even add “Hugo” to your list, a movie Scorsese made because he wanted to make a movie that his grandkids can enjoy. ❤ It’s absolutely gorgeous, and is definitely his least violent movie by FAR. Lol

      Agree that it's too long, it's not a perfect movie, but like I said: classic Scorsese is 1973-1995. There is some good stuff (like this) after that, but his most perfect works are in that period. King Of Comedy and After Hours are wild, great, classic 80s comedies. De Niro is amazing in King Of Comedy. So is Sandra Bernhardt. And After Hours has Catherine O'Hara, Teri Garr, Roseanne Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Verna Bloom.......Cheech and Chong, lol........Wild 80s NYC at night classic! And only an hour and 25 minutes!

      @@Little1Cave I love all the recreations of Melies in "Hugo". I'm a silent movie/early cinema fanatic and collector, so to make Melies come alive was definitely special. And again: completely different stylistically. He can work in a variety of styles, not just the wild Goodfellas flash that the stuff she's been watching just happens to employ.

I always tell most people with Scorsese: watch the De Niro collabs, minus New York, New York.....and then add After Hours! One of the great movies of the 80s, the decade everyone says was so great yet most don't know a thing about it! lol.

    2023 has been quite a year for film and especially the Best Picture nominees hasn’t it? One interesting trend among Best Picture nominees this year is the exploration of the dark side of human nature and/or the consequences of humanity's quest for power. This film, OPPENHEIMER, and THE ZONE OF INTEREST (and even BARBIE in it's own way) all explore this topic. The first 3 of them are incidentally nominated for Best Director as well. Everyone must see THE ZONE OF INTEREST when they get the chance (distributed by A24, by the way), which has proven to be shockingly relevant (it is not your typical movie in any way, and I found it simultaneously devastating and unsettling).

This is not a "movie" movie in the sense that it is entertaining, but rather deliberately made to be a quasi-reality show/documentary mix that is intended to be artistic in its approach and make the viewer think about our modern life. It definitely accomplished what it set out to do IMO.

    Re the ending, it was a radio show, and those shows actually happened. The FBI had an arrangement with some radio company whereby there would be a weekly dramatic adaptation of a recent crime and investigation. I am guessing that an episode on the Osage murders did actually take place. The FBI was still relatively new at the time, so it was also a way to raise awareness of it. Moreover, back in the day, since TVs didn’t exist yet, there were often live radio shows that adapted recent popular films (e.g., Casablanca, Shadow of a Doubt, Gaslight); some of them are available on UA-cam. The sound effects used in them are similar to the ones Scorsese uses here.

    Read the book this film adaptation was based on, which was a thoroughly researched investigation down deep rabbit hole of paper trails spanning many years, unearthing the wide scope of the systemic corruption, beyond just the town of Osage itself.
    The book delved deeper into the ludicrous guardianship system which restricted the indigenous of their own money. The status quo in that disgraceful period of discrimination, was the USG condoned laws that deemed native Indian tribes as savages who didn't have the mental capacity to manage their own finance.
    Hale was symbolic of that greater evil lurking in the shadows of a flawed status quo governance.

    I’m almost curious how you take The Irishman. Even though it’s built on previous Scorsese films like Goodfellas, Casino, and Departed but it’s a lot more in style and sensibility of Killers of the Flower Moon. It’s a lot more reflective, grounded, and doesn’t have that tonal jarring you felt in those other Scorsese films. It is as long as Killers, so maybe you won’t watch it for the channel but perhaps you might enjoy it more than Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street.

    There’s nothing wrong with you, Natalie. As a guy who loves the cinema, I too have enjoyed every aspect of how this movie was made, directed by Martin Scorsese, no less. The one thing I admire from this story is that it is nearly accurate to the source material from the book itself that everyone we have seen and come to know have truly existed and the events that were occurring took place on the exact same spot where the murders have happened when filming this. A true testament of a man who used his talents to bring this unknown part of US history to life. Another classic that I recommend is “Gangs of New York.” Fair warning: this isn’t for the faint of heart. Good luck and take care.
