    The recognizably famous main medley I like but not the surrounding variations, which seems a meaningless jumble of discordancy, doing nothing for me; in that respect, I'm disappointed. For me, as a whole, it fails.

      Theme and variations is a form familiar to Beethoven, Paganini, and Bach. It showcases instrumental virtuosity and the imagination of the composer, one and the same in this case. It's not for everybody, as you point out.
