  • We finally faced the dreaded chore of uncovering the cabbage to see if it actually made anything. Disappointed at what we found, but really enjoyed spending the day in the garden with our girls here in the mountains of Appalachia.

I like what Corey is saying about wasting food. I think when you work close to the earth with gardens and raising animals you become very aware of how much work is involved to get food to the table. You do not want to waste.

I see a good ole fashioned bean breakin in the future. When I was growing up in Tennessee we had cornshuckins, pea hullin, pea hull jelly. Picking, peeling, cutting apples from the orchard around our chicken coop and then drying them in the sun on screens we made our own souse meat between Thanksgiving and Christmas. All kinds of things most folks today wouldn't begin to understand or undertake. Neighbor ladies from out the road would visit one another and just sit down and start helping like it was their own garden being worked up. Sure do miss my grandma 👵😔

@@CelebratingAppalachia I remember when I was in first grade my teacher was Mrs. Louise Terry. It was nap time one day and we had some new headphones with padding on them. Mrs. Terry was out of the room, and I had it in my head that I wanted to try on them headphones just to see what they felt like. I was so scared of getting caught that I hemmed and hawed and waited; finally got up the nerve and put them on. . .not listening to music or nothin', when in walks Mrs. Terry. I got my hand whipped with her ruler [this was the early 70s] something fierce while everybody else was out to recess. When my mama got her teacher's aide certification and started working at my elementary school, guess whose room she was assigned to? Mrs. Louise Terry's.

I am a retired teacher (middle school and elementary). I love Tipper's remembrance of Corie's teacher saying she was the kind of student who made her want to be a teacher. Then Matt chimes in with Katie's the kind that makes a teacher want to retire! Lol. I have had plenty of both types! I honestly don't think Katie would make me want to retire, however! My very first public school teaching experience was not the best. I was assigned two groups of kids in middle school who had been identified as "potential dropouts" and I literally went home and cried every day!

Loved this video of your sweet family working and laughing together, sharing good memories with one another. It cracks me up that Corie and Katie loved their teachers when they were little but hated school. LOL. I can just imagine what little stinkers they were. It sounds like they got it honestly from their Daddy who took all his clothes off and ran around the room in Kindergarten resulting in him getting sent home. Lol And speaking of the disappointments of gardening, my cucumbers were growing like gang busters with blooms galore. Then I notice some the of the leaves started to turn yellow, curl up and some were even getting spots. Being new to gardening, I didn’t realize how devastating the moldy mildew can be to cucumbers. Fortunately, I have been able to have plenty to eat with our meals and I have put up several jars of pickles. I will know what to do next year and will get on it at the first sign. I hope your family enjoys the Labor Day weekend. Thanks for always making me smile.

I love the idea of gettin in the truck and finding findin someone else who had a good year with cabbage. That is hilarious!! And crocheted pumpkins might not taste good at Thanksgiving. Reminds me....I had a bowl of fake apples sitting on my dining table. I had a bunch of family over and the next day there was a fake apple with teeth marks in it and a chunk bitten out of it. To this day I don't know who tried to eat my fake apple but they probably won't try that again.

Well live and learn, but at least no snakes were found in the weeds. And even though the cabbage didn't make, the rest of the garden was beautiful! What a great gift all the grow bags. That was so nice. And can't wait for the watermelons!! hahahah have your teeth floated like a horse---now that is funny... Love it when you all get together! Oh have to check the acorns out to see if it is a knife fork or spoon in it. I hope we have a good wet winter to make up for this no rain summer. Cow shoes---that was Andy Griffith show--loved that episode. I had a woodpecker once that decided to peck on our gutters at 6 in the morning. Now that was loud. I guess he got the bugs that fell out. Talking about a way to preserve food. When I was a boy my grandmother that lived in Kentucky used to use all of her stuff up that was in the refrigerator to make a soup and it was called burgoo. Yeah extra chicken that was left over shredded up extra hamburger if it was in it would be ground up along with all the vegetables and stuff that she needed to do and put it all together and make a big soup out of it and it was darn tasty and you could also freeze it just a part of my childhood that I don’t get anymore. My grandmother passed on she lived to be 103 years old.

I agree, I think that Pop company needs to sponsor you, you are a good "influencer", people are buying them up 🙂 My brother and I reminisce alot about school days too.. One of my embarrassing memories as a 1st grader was the day I was just 'over" being at school, so I faked a "stomache ache" and went to the sick room. The lady Principal came in and was on to me and questioned me if I was really "sick".. Well I stuck by my bold face lie and they called my Mom, who came and took me home. My conscience starting really bothering me and I remember walking out of school with my head down in shame. I don't remember if I ever came clean, but my Mom was no dummy either, so I may have been punished, I don't remember, lol.. Your chickens will be eating "high on the hog" as my Mom used to say with all the greens from the garden! Hoping we'll see another video with you down at Corie''s soon harvesting her garden! God bless you all and have a great week!

Corie, when I was raising my family, any leftover veggies from supper were drained and when at room temperature, I would dump them into a ziplock bag in my freezer. Even tomatoes that were getting overly ripe, I would cut up and add in. Potatoes that were getting too old, anything like that. Because there were 5 of us, I used a gallon sized bag, but now that it is just me, I use a half gallon bag. When I am ready for vegetable soup, I just cook my stew meat and dump in my bag of mixed vegetables and nothing goes to waste. Sometimes, there would just be a serving spoon of corn or Lima beans or pintos, but it all adds up. You can do the same with fruit. Then use it for smoothies.

I am so impressed by your amazing family and the incredible garden you tend all year long. Everything looks so lush and healthy. Really surprising that the cabbage did not do as well as expected. But the bounty you have gotten so far from the garden is beyond wonderful. I am so inspired by all of you! Even the popsicle breaks are charming and delightful. God bless you all and keep you safe!!! Greetings from Northern AZ.

I’d enjoy a video or series detailing how you’ve laid out your garden, how you’ve grown and developed it over time, what you plant when, and how you keep it up during the growing season. My grandmother (who lived about 100 miles SW of you) always had a big garden like yours but the knowledge was never passed to my generation. Been binging your videos all week. Thanks.

Small, but better than nothing at all. The zinnia is pretty. Wish I had some of my grandma's zinnia seed. Hers were pretty and big like yours. Always enjoy your videos.🥰💖🙏

Sorry about your cabbages Tipper. It seems like there’s always some heartbreak in gardening. I went to harvest my beets last week and some rodent had taken a few nibbles out of every single one. I didn’t know whether to curse or cry, so I just fed the beet greens to the chickens and picked beans instead.
I very much enjoy the quiet talks with you and Hubby, but your girls certainly liven things up! What a joy and treasure they are!

Oh my!! This reminds me of picking green beans with my Grandma. Then my first favorite part was getting to snap them. And my second favorite part was eating them after they were canned and Grandma always put bacon in them!! Yum!! Thanx for the memories!

Tipper could you make a video about making leather britches for those of us who have never made them from green beans? Maybe talk a bit more about them too? I have another question. Is there any sassafras around any more. As a young girl I loved tea made from sassafras.

Sigh I wish my kids were still at home or close. Our daughter is 3 hrs away & our son is stationed in CA but has been in Europe for the past few months. Your pole beans look much better than mine. Our bush beans did better than the pole.. Your cabbage did better than ours lol.

My Mama had a Tupperware bowl that she kept in the freezer for leftover bits of veggies. She called it her “Soup Seed.” When the bowl was full, it was time for soup! She made the best vegetable soup! I love your garden! I used to have an acre garden when my children were young. Sure do miss all the wonderful vegetables. 💙🥹 Lots of memories of us in the garden.🥰♥️🙋🏻 ~Janis

After spending the summer with my parents and (then) 16 year old brother, my son came home to enter the second grade. At the first teacher/parent conference, his teacher said, “He is such a good student, always cheerful, helpful to his friends……did you know he has been doing Cheech and Chong routines for Show and Tell?” 😱🤣 I had a long talk with my son and then my brother. We still laugh about it today. Love you all working together and enjoying family time! ❤️🙌🏼

Awesome family. Keep the mountain traditions alive. I was afraid that family gardens would die out but their are young people in my community growing vegetables and canning what they grow. Some have blueberry bushes and strawberries too. With this inflation it's also a great way to save money! And look at the family time y'all get to enjoy while you're melting in the August heat.
