@@anjetto1 Tank controls are absolutely necessary for fixed camera games. It'd be so much worse to have the controls completely flip out on you every time the camera angle changes. I think when someone struggles with tank controls at first, it might actually be beneficial to have them change to the "normal" controls (if possible) and see how rough it is so they appreciate the consistency of the tank controls.

That was fun! I always appreciate that it's not Monty just watching his fiancée suffer, it's commentary on what the game does and doesn't do to introduce the game and series to a new player. It provides a unique glimpse into what makes a game stick for a person and what drives them away. Thanks Monty and Noobus!

This is such a brilliant video series. Examining a game through the eyes of someone who doesn’t “game” super frequently or is new to a series or genre. It’s fun, engaging, deeper than just a funny surface level, and you are both so entertaining and the production value is amazing as well. I spent today working my way through the entire playlist and it’s been great…can’t wait for the next one. Congrats to both of you on the engagement and thanks for some great content to accompany my day.

Actually, the game does give you a heads up on Crimson Heads if you take the time to find & collect all the notes & papers left around all over the mansion. Some of the notes mention that zombies would revive with reddened skin, code named "Crimson Heads", and to prevent this, canisters of kerosene are left about to fill your flask, or even better, take advantage of the Grenade Ammo glitch to give yourself around 240 Incendiary Rounds, more than enough rounds to prevent any future Crimson Heads & deal with all the advanced enemies & bosses (only works on the US GameCube version though).

I can't imagine how it is to be confused by the tank controls, it feels so obvious that for a moment there i thought they were faking it for the video. It’s sometimes hard to forget how damn scary the game was in comparison to the sequels. The fixed camera was optimized against the gorgeously rendered detail of the mansion. You’re stuck in a horror movie, and you have to savor every resource found for your character to survive. It’s a simple premise as timeless as horror itself

  • @Sentay0

I feel like the biggest hurdle is that RE1 establishes all your people as being in the foyer and then they aren't and it gives you the objective find wesker (which seems like a very mild first objective to do, since y'all were together in the foyer like 30 seconds ago). You don't end up finding him till the midsection which is so long that most people, without context or history, will think they've done something wrong or missed him which makes the puzzles that are actually progress feel like side content or at the very least wastes of time (since you've been explicitly tasked with finding someone who should logically be nearby).

It’s still awkward and unintuitive, but it’s awkward and unintuitive in a way doesn’t remind my muscle memory of less awkward and unintuitive games.

This is both entertaining but also a fun study of how first time people can feel while playing these games without the reason why they're like that. I remember as a kid playing a bunch of RE similar games and struggled to navigate around the map including the controls. Fast forward to 2016 I watched my friend's mother who's into old arcades and modern cinematic games, she was struggling to get used to the controls also the fixed camera perspective is very frustrating to her because she couldn't see her enemies and constantly worried what path is right to take and if her inventory n her skills were up for what's ahead. It does make me appreciate the standard of modern action games we get today like resident evil 4 and the many many many games that came after it. Controls and perspective is very important especially for casuals who don't want to struggle with bizzare gameplay choices.

  • @Sinuev1

Guaranteed the reason she had so many problems with the tank controls early on is because she was using the analog stick for movement, rather than the D-Pad. When the original Resi came out, Playstation didn't have analog sticks - so they were aping a control scheme from many old PC games (which had been exploring 3D longer than consoles had) which used tank controls due to the digital nature of keyboard inputs (mouse pointers were largely standardized by then, but most developers still hadn't figured out how to marry keyboard and mouse in combination for smooth movement).
Digital inputs severely lack directional mobility if you're doing direct movement since you only have access to up/down/left/right - pressing down and left together will only give a 45 degree angle of movement between the two. Tank controls, however, allow you to arc the characters travel path even in motion. It provided much more accurate controls, with a full 360 degree range even while in motion. It makes it much easier to navigate environments and not get brought to a dead halt on geometry or pathing. Have her play an old Sierra adventure game like KQ4 and try to follow a very narrow path (that will kill you if you fall off) from a distant perspective (meaning you only have a few pixels of space) using only the keyboard number pad for movement.

Watching this and seeing someone encounter the game for the first time really brought me back to why I fell in love with it. My first RE was RE2, but nothing stuck with me quite like the RE1 Remake on Gamecube. I can't remember how old I was, I think 12 or 13. I got my mom to rent it for me from Blockbuster. I took it down to our unfinished basement and immediately began playing it on my little 19 inch CRT screen. The graphics absolutely blew my mind. In fact, I think the game is still beautiful. The scene where Kenneth gets his throat ripped out honest to God made me sick. I turned the game off. I even went and told my mom. She was horrified. But I ended up pressing on because I didn't want to give up. A switch inside me had flipped and I realized I had to conquer this game. It was a matter of honor. I'm sure I died plenty but I had eventually gotten to the point where I felt more comfortable running around the mansion. I'd found plenty of ammo. I'd made good progress with the puzzles. And I was slowly cleaning out the rooms for safety. I even made maps by taking pictures of the screen with our digital camera and then editing them in MS Paint, marking supplies and dead zombies and naming the rooms. I'd never committed to being so meticulous over a game and there was something very satisfying to be said of it. It felt more real, more intense. Eventually I ran into the same surprise she did - the crimson heads. I thought I was so clever for wiping out the zombies, only for them to come back in droves. I remember running from room to room trying to make it work, not wanting to admit defeat. There was even a moment where I scored a head shot on a crimson head with my very last handgun round. Alas I had to start over because my supplies ran out on me. I was so proud of myself for eventually saving Chris and Barry and getting the good ending. I've played every other main series entry except RE3 OG and I have to say that out of them all, this made the biggest impression on me and it is one of my absolute favorites, even being someone who does not gravitate towards horror games. You can cut this game's oppressive atmosphere with a knife and there is something to be said of the monumental pride you feel in yourself for overcoming what at first seemed impossible and letting out an intense sigh of relief as you watching your character fly off into the sunset in that chopper.

In regards to the camera angle thing, I really prefer the fixed cameras to the over the should. It gives the games a more cinematic feel, like the old horror movies where the scene keeps jumping because there were multiple cameras, it allows the game to put enemies just out of sight without needing them to constantly burst out of things, they are just behind the black. 2 and 3 work fine losing the angle as they are more focused on the chase, so having Mr.X/Nemesis jump out at you from random places plays to it.

    • @sonicsean34
      @sonicsean34 5 місяців тому

Yup I remember rooms from the classic Resi games much more vividly than anything since re4 cos they were presented so iconically.
The best the later games give is just a general vibe of the local (or in the case of re6, forgettable blandness)

While I understand the need to avoid backseat gaming, I feel like there at least should have been an explanation of the original game's controls. A lot of these older games expect players to read the manual (not that many did, though *I* did). It could have saved a lot of the initial headache--still clunky but at least it would help wrap your head around them, especially if you explain it like driving a car.

Ah, Resident Evil. This was my favorite game for years, it still holds up today. I rented this back when it came out and kept it for 3 months. The video store kept calling me to return it. I did return it but never went back due to the fees. I mastered this game and the “tank” controls. Even accomplished finishing the game using only the knife (Japanese players challenge)

Looking back at older games, especially at games with controls like this, I think we need to remember that a lot of these games didn't have tutorials... but they DID have manuals. Sure, lots of us may have completely ignored the manuals, but they were always there to provide guidance to players who wanted it. I think to make this at least a reasonable experience, the manual should be available.

Def agree and it pisses me off when publishers put games on modern systems and don’t include a digital manual since they were designed assuming you read the thing.
You see so many ppl playing old games and getting annoyed cos the game isn’t stopping to tell you how to play cos they’ve been trained on 2-hour tutorial levels for every game in recent history and there's no indication the game had another source that wasn't included with the port so they just assume the game was always frustrating
I remember in high school days getting a game and reading the manual on the bus ride home so I’d be ready to start as soon as I got indoors. Was magical.

Once we learn that going into any room and tapping the aim button will point towards an enemy, you can do that also on long hallways. Its game breaking in the sense that lowers the tension.

I'm sure that'll come with the inevitable remake, once we've got a version of 1 that's not built around static camera angles. Not sure how they could translate the original perspective into VR

I can't understand how the controls can be a problem. Maybe the first couple of tries "oh, it rotates, ok, got it", but it's not that difficult, I can't imagine how it is to not get the tank controls. I don't say this to be mean, I'm curious, the controls are so obvious, I can't imagine how it can be confusing.

Have really enjoyed this series so far, happy to have found it 😁 one thing that crossed my mind with this video though, is that this is a game that released when manuals were commonplace and typically really good for advice on playing the game. Would it be worth, in the case of games from that era, to give advice that's in the manual?
