I was in high school in Chula Vista when I heard the report of the white deer being killed due the injection of a high dose tranquillizer. It was really sad that the deer killed in such a negligent manner. However, it's good to know that people cared enough to create a monument in the deer's memory.
I remember her from my childhood. It was always magical to see her. I remember my own outrage as a little girl, and my family’s. We all went to the funeral. But I didn’t realize there was a monument. I’ll look for it next time I’m back home. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
@@SidetrackAdventures yeah, I sent your video to another friend friend who grew up in Mission Hills and who went as well. She said she’s been to the monument and will take me there next time I’m in town. 🙏🏻
Not in my backyard, but I do so enjoy these videos. I wish someone would do some like this in Oregon. Until then, I'll watch these and be happy to see things off the beaten path. Thanks.
I love this special story...I was stationed in the Navy in SD, back around 1970...never heard of this white deer. Being from rather rainy Seattle, my two years in SD was definitely different...In Seattle, we get rain off and on, for at least 8 months of the year...in sunny SD, it seemed to rain only in late November thru February. Quite a change for me!...But it is a beautiful city, and when I was heading back home to Seattle, I actually felt a pang of regret, that I did not just decide to stay there!...There were times when I felt a sense of deja vu, when checking out the streets of SD. I understand, why SoCal attracts to many folks...the nice weather, and many parks, make the city my 2nd favorite city on the West Coast. Seattle is my home town, and I love it.
i hadn't thought of this deer in years! i was taken to this spot as part of a school trip around 20yrs ago in elementary school and was told the same story, happy you're helping keep the memory alive
I grew up in the 50’s across the road in Mission Valley. My parents would speak of this elusive deer. I never got the chance to see it. Thought of it as just an urban legend. May it’s spirit roam free.
I was born here in San Diego in 1957 and visited Presidio Park numerous times growing up, but I never knew about the White Deer until a few years ago. Thank you for this video showing where she rests; I am going to go and visit her.
Wow had not thought of this for 50years. I remember my dad pointing out the deer. Could see it at times from that frontage rd. Just south of interstate 8 below the Presidio. Thanks for sharing this.
What a sad story! Poor little deer, all by herself for years!! And then incompetent bureaucrats kill her! The monument is nice, though. Thanks for such an interesting story!
Used to go to the Inspiration Point parking lot from time to time when I was in High School. Never noticed the Deer Memorial because it was dark. Thanks for sharing. I don’t know how you keep coming up with this great content, but so glad you do! Went to Camp Iron Mountain last weekend because of your videos. It was fantastic!
I thought there was going to be a statue of the white deer….unfortunately the City of SD has a long history of incompetence. It is so sad that it ended the life of such a wonderful animal.
I'm really enjoying your videos. A couple of decades ago, when I could afford to travel for vacation, I had lunch and meditated on that bench several times. I really liked that park. I didn't know the back story on the deer. I thought it was a pet of someone's who lived nearby.
The should make a larger-than-life statue of the deer in white marble or something. He could stand proud on some kind of elevated platform overlooking the watering hole. I'm a dreamer!
I saw the deer one night driving with my dad wen I was about 10. I thought 🤔 it was a ghost and never told anyone. Not tytto long after, I read in the UT about it. Nice video in all of ur videos. SD native 👍
That's a curious monument to a sad story. Never heard about this deer sadly. Interesting about the ghost reports though. Always hear about humans on those paranormal shows but never too many animals. 😅
I remember this event so well …I was never aware of this monument. As a kid growing up in nearby Serra Mesa, deer were exotic creatures. Now where I live across the. Country, deer are pests. Sure, they look kinda cute, but wait until one suddenly jumps in the road ahead of your car or eats your lovingly tended garden plants!
Never know what you will fined in the canyon 😂 i grew up in mission hills sad what the finest city lets live on and off the streets ! Was a safe place back in the day! Love the videos
Nice, really nice, resting place. How could such a horrible mistaken happen? The people who killed it didn't have any brains. They should have gotten fired. Maybe the ghost deer is there to haunt them and pay them back for causing such misery? I say, "GO DEER GO!"
The two white deer used to hang out together. One was hit by a car on Taylor St. and killed. That was one of the reasons given by animal control when they decided to remove the one.
I remember the white Deer. It's so Sad people killed it. Knowledgeable people should have been sent to take care of her. You really cant get any Stupider than this. Yes it would have been sad to see her hit on the Highway but she had managed to live here for 10 years unharmed.

Yes, its such a shame how everything happened with the deer.

Wow, that's amazing you went to the funeral. I read in an article there was a fairly large crowd for it.
I hope you do go and pay respects to the deer. It'll be good for you, too.

So they had to kill the deer to save it. How 1970s is that?

It's great you have memories of the deer. It lives still, in the minds of those who knew it.

I’ve lived in Mission Hills for 33 years and have never heard about this. Thank you.
I remember seeing the white deer on the hillside while driving to and from SDSU - always a special sighting.
I like that background Music: Eternal Garden (So Awesome)
A couple of years ago I happened upon the monument. Thank you so much for the details on such a lovely memory.
Lived in SD from the mid-70's to the mid 80's and I am just now learning about this. Thanks!!
So sad !! Glad they put so much into the monument for it😢
Love your content!
4:35-4:40 is my favorite part. It's the eyes. ;-) Seriously, sad story, and nice video. Thanks!
That road up was a great necking location back in the day...
Based on the cars that were there it probably still is...

Another informative trek ! How sad...Grandfather (U.S.M.C.) wrote us about this when I was 14 !!!

Early 70's I was going to work early in the a.m. to MCRD and seen the deer on the side of the hill by the presidio
I have always wanted to go up that road, but never knew I could.
Great video! I've been moving so I wasn't able to watch this when it was posted.
Also, the story if the deer made me a bit emotional.
Thanks for pointing that out. RIP little deer.

Oh my what a back story amazing reveal.
Wow, you'd think they could spend a little money on keeping the place up and some signage. I guess the city would rather this story be forgotten.
There was just some major work done on the Presidio but I'm not sure who actually paid for that, as its run by the San Diego History Center.
That's a curious monument to a sad story. Never heard about this deer sadly. Interesting about the ghost reports though. Always hear about humans on those paranormal shows but never too many animals. 😅
Yeah, always wonder how the lack of animal ghosts is explained, unless they normally just haunt other animals lol
I remember the sniper in the tower, the canyon will contain flavorfull people...LoL 🤠🤪
I've been lucky enough to see several White/Albino Deer in the wild.
Indeed an almost Spiritual Experience...
Cool story, I'm not from there I'll have to check it some weekend
The museum at the Presidio is worth checking out if you visit.

From what I understand the ranger who did it never got fired.
They should have had a veterinarian from the zoo do it. Doofuses!
I've lived in SD longer than some people, and this is news to me!
Well at least it went 'tranquilly' and not in traffic
I remember seeing the deer from the freeway when I was a kid.
The two white deer used to hang out together. One was hit by a car on Taylor St. and killed. That was one of the reasons given by animal control when they decided to remove the one.
This is so sad.
