This video prompted me to buy the PI strings and they are a find.I just put them on and they seem to have settled in .They have a smooth open feel and really good response. The tone is a bit like Dominants but with more possibilities and a shade less bright. The silver D has ample projection and the tin E is also without blemish. My 925 violin is on the darker side, but less so with these strings.Larsen Virtuoso was a benchmark by which I judged others on my violin, and if anything, I like them even more. Thanks for leading me this way!
Additional to the educational value ( which is great) the editing was on point , starting from that thumbnail 😂. It definitely tells these are your favorite strings. “ They’re not going to cure cancer or your intonation problems” some TwoSet style material there :P
Hi, thanks for your review. Just wondering, will you compare these PI100 against the Pirastro Perpetual with Platinum e? I believe Pirastro came out with the Perpetual specifically to compete against these PI strings.
Just purchased these strings, can't wait for them to come in the mail! These reviews are so helpful, this is the second set of strings I'm trying because of you!
I love these strings, my violin is pretty loud and bright but still a little sweet so these dark complex loud strings really helps draw out that soloist sound, currently a year into the Bach Chaconne almost 80% done with it and these never fail to respond or cease resonating even when they're completely dead and don't sound anything like the new ones they'll still out preform a new set of dominants or tonicas with the right player. I have so much more color depth especially with the g and pairing the whole set with a pirastro gold label E to replace the very tin-ny and harsh E that came with the set. It really gives me that soaring sweet yet shimmering sound, truly gold.
Your enthusiasm for these strings is intelligently placed. (Proof: Bomsori Kim is using Peter Infelds, along w/ a Warchal Karneol E, here: ua-cam.com/video/qkvrrUv2sO0/v-deo.html ) OMG! Combined with her wonderful Guadagnini, what wonderful sound/tone. And performance. I'm in love!
I've also come from EP Greens and put on my first set of PIs (PI100) a few days ago. On my 1820s English violin, I pretty much concur with your experience. I'm waiting for my German bow to be repaired/rehaired and a M Fischer bow to arrive which may be even better, but on a very cheap temporary bow, the sound is a lot more complex than the EP Greens and feel a bit quieter under the ear (but doesn't mean less projection). With time, the strings have really settled down and sound quiet sweet, especially the platinum E which I least expected. On my violin the E is a bit louder than the other three which means it's not perfectly balanced, but it does sing and has a great response up top. I've also used a set of EP Gold (silver G) once and my honest feeling is that the EP Golds are probably better sounding strings IMHO, especially low down, but those went off relatively quickly. I prefer the PIs over the EP Greens. Anyway, I found a good price for them in the EU and have ordered three more sets!
Would you recommend these for the master violin? I'm wanting to upgrade the strings that came with the violin to something that'll just bring it to the next level! I was also interested in pairing it with a gold pirastro E string, unless you'd have any other recommendations? Would this be a good set up for my master violin? Thank you!
Hi! Our master luthier Felix believes that the Fiddlerman Master violin will sound great with these PI strings :) Or the Pirastro Gold string set. But he would not pair the PI with the Gold E, since the PI E-strings is so great already. Thanks :)
I bought a set of this string! And my experience in the first day is that G, D and E (platinium) are incredible! But personally find A string too dark and not shining in my violin. So I changed A string to my previous green pirastro steel and now they all sound great!
How often do violinists put different kinds of strings on their instruments? I always thought that " you would never put a flat wound on with a round wound or a steel string" on a guitar. I know this is violin, but doesn't the same principal apply?
@patriciajrs46 well, violin is very sensitive and responsive instrument against subtle changes! For example a different wood for bridge or even moving it only 1 mm back or front can easily improve or worsen the sound quality. This is the same for violin strings! And also the same strings may sound different on the different violins! So you need to test it yourself and for a balanced and professional sounding sometimes you need to use different strings as a set. So it's very common to use different strings at the same time and you will benefit from this for sure!
Hey Michael. What can you say about the durability of this set. Considering that they are expensive, I think it's important to know how often Ill be needing to replace these. For some context: I play every weekend for an average of 7 hours (gigs), I also practice for about 1 hour everyday on the weekdays. If anyone could answer this question, that would be awesome!!
I have researched a bit on violin strings in the past, and found I am very picky. For my past violin I just went with fiddlershop's strings cause I didn't really care for any of the brands, and the price and tone were great for the violin I had. I bought this violin with these strings on them, and didn't realize what strings they were until now. I haven't researched this price range of strings, and my new violin definitely deserves the price range, but man, shocked by the price, but I love these strings, so nice to have a breakdown. I thought it was my violin that had such a great projection, but now from hearing him describe the strings, he is right, they are loud then, but in a great way and perfect for playing in concert halls. In my case I am playing with a band and am hooked up to an amp, the pickup I use dampens the sound quite a bit, but they still project well even then. I recommend them, and I will probably not change brands in the future.
Very entertaining presentation. The strings seems to have intonation issues. Is there another set of strings that you recommend that play more in tune?
Lol! Yeah, all the strings I play seem to have that same issue. If you find a set that fixes poor intonation, let me know ASAP. I don't know what else to do! 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Michael I have some questions to ask. Which violin string do u prefer, Evah Pirazzi Green or Peter Enfield? Which sounds better and which last longer? 🙂
Hi Nam, For me, (and on my violin) I like PI strings for their durability and slightly more muscular sound. But man, there might not be a better sound than some Evah Green strings right out of the package. They are so sparkly, but fade out just a little early.
I'm positively impressed with PI 100. Beautiful sound in every position. Haven't checked the price but would be highly tempted to spring for them, regardless. Certainly would not the other two types you showed. Thanks for a thorough, well structured and fully informative demonstration.
Well I would like you to make a video of Viola's strings please, so far I used the Obligato game, eva gold, CG Spirocore and full Larsen game and just in a few days I will try the π and so far my favorite set is C Spirocore tungsten G Chrome D and A Larsen. Great Videos!!!
I played Obligatos for years and just decided to pick these up. I'm excited to play them, but a little nervous about blending with my symphony now. LOL I'm sure I will love them though.
an update, i had been using Evah P's on my Ming 905, and they are unlike any other string in every other way, even when they start to go out.(Unusually short life span on the Evahs). I thought something might be wrong with the violin because it was sounding off, especially D on A. I watched this video humpteen times, and figured what the hay, I've got visions on the artist and it sounds great, fantastic actually, lets see what the PIs will do. Power is a bit of an understatement. they are way ahead of Pirrazis. I was intimidated, they havent even had a chance to break in and they are outperforming the Evah greens in every single category. The clarity and strength, everything, beyond words. you compared them to Obligotos but to me they are much closer to the Visions. its almost like im playing the same violin but having it amplified, with every great thing about the Visions even better in the PIs. I have never been a fan of Thomastik, had a bad experience with them when i first started and never looked back. Today, as far as these two violins go, Visions and PIs are the only strings I'll ever buy for them. And as for the E string......No one else even comes close to the PIs platinum. the absolute best E string I have ever used.
Wow, Mark. You should see if Thomastik is hiring in marketing! But, I'm glad they were a good fit for you. I was equally blown away the first time I put them on my instrument, it's like you don't know what you're missing until you try them. But also to be balanced....they aren't for everyone. I also like the Vision Solo Titanium for a long time, but the PI's just had that extra little "umph" you described so well. Happy practicing -Gibbles
Put these on my MJZ 909 and the platinum E string is on fire! It resonates while playing the A and D strings. I've never seen an E ring like this thing. Is it normal for the E to ring like this with the sympathetic vibrations from the other strings? The pirastro universal E I was using didn't do this. Violist wants to know.
I would really love a comparison between Infeld Red and PIs. The Reds are my all time favorites from back when I played, but PIs seem to be so highly regarded as well. I love how warm, rich, and full the Reds sound. PIs are considerably brighter with less robust or deep sound?
I ordered some of these for my violin because my Pirazzi Golds are shot after only 4 months…thppp….one reviewer said Pi wears out after one month. That seems unbelievable to me unless you practice 9 hours a day….how long would these likely last for someone who plays about an hour or two each day?
I've just changed pi as new choice, and its sound is really impressive. quite loud, clear sound, etc.... I like it and are there any specific recommendations or tips for playing well with PI?
so far all explanations of" Michael explains it all" VALID, helpfull and leading up in violin sound - Larsen "Il cannone solo" - Evah Pirazzi Gold - and now just one pitch better - Thomastik Peter Infeld Platinum P100. So thanks for great video series.
I am coming from times when EUDOXA was near the SUMMIT of violin heaven. But now - with informations of "Michael explaines it all" I had wonderful experiences with Larsen "Il Cannone" and with Warchal "Amber" (which I put on reserve just in case for the small ensemble) - and now have the WONDERFUL problem, to make a decision for my 150 years old Bohemian violin "without certificates" whether to choose Evah Pirazzi Gold - which IS wonderful - and Thomastik Infeld PI Platinum p100" which INDEED gives a special PITCH (of FOCUS) over the orchestra - which but I will have to check against the SINGING qualities of the Evah Pirazzi Gold. Well, Infeld PI just arrived this morning - and I will have to make tests, to get soms data from experience. BUT, as should be stressed, WITHOUT any complaining, because BOTH are REMARKABLE, Evah Pirazzi Gold and the Thomastik Infeld Pi. are spledind in their own right. JUST imagine, what Louis Spohr or Beethoven may have accomplished with SUCH TOOLS from TODAY technologies! - Thanks again for INFORMATION - kicking off the HUMDRUM!
@@brunoantoniobuike7068hi glad you have firsthand experience with the exact 3 sets of strings I am interested in. Would like to hear your thoughts about their differences. I have a quite old (125+) German violin that sounds dark and and sweet which I like. I put Evah green on it and worked quite well with more brilliance and volume. Then I needed more volume and changed to Stradpet titanium tailpiece+button which works to that outcome, but the Evah now becomes a bit metallic. I changed to Warchal Amber and the sound is now just right and net-net still with bigger sound than before. I just wonder if the Evah gold or PI would give even bigger sound without again leading back to too metallic
@@simon0yeung Michael has explained in meantime Pirastro Cadenza and Pirastro Permanent Cadenza - and well at moment I think this is even more than eva pirazzi, which was amazing already.
Would these match better with Optima Goldbrokat E or Westminster E I would probably go with the 27.5 heavy gauge. I currently have Vision Solo's which I like, but I'm thinking the PI's may have a little quicker response. My violin is a loud, dark Guarneri model.
How do you train your ear to differentiate between the sound of different strings and also the sound of different violins? How do you know the sound you are hearing is due to the strings?
Thanks for watching! The best way to train your ears is to play as much as possible and try as many different instruments as possible. You'll over time develop the ear to tell the difference and whether the difference is due to the strings, quality of the instrument, or both :)
Well I've got a quite bright and projective violin by itself would you recommend those strings to support even more that character or the obligato for a more warm and dark sound? Also has it any relevance with the style and Era of the piece? For example obligato for romantic Era pieces like Tchaikovsky of Dvorak and p100 for composers like Mozart of Bach where you are looking for a more clear sound? By the way very good and analytical reviews!!
Good questions! OK, so sometimes bright and powerful violins (and their players) like all the power they can get, and going all in is amazing. Personally, this was my experience, I got a taste for life in the fast lane and have never looked back. (well, not completely true, but it's not about me) Other times, PI's can just be too much, and something just slightly scaled back like Vision Solo Titaniums hit the sweet spot. But then again, as your other question alluded, we don't play concertos all day, every day, and sometimes you might just want something a little more subtle. And, you can't change your strings that often, or in the middle of a recital. :-) So, sometimes a more middle-of-the-road string makes sense. What fun! Thanks for asking!
Can I ask if this string pair well with stradpet tailpiece? Will it still give the sound you played and described or will it be little metallic sound due to its titanium material in tail piece? Appreciated if you could respond curious about it 😊👍
Hey! It doesn't matter the instrument too much, and it will work. These strings are THE BEST! I use the platinum ones as a soloist in my orchestra, and they have great power with amazinf clarity and a beautiful tone.
I'm using the Fiddlerman Artist violin and Holstein 2-star bow in all of these string videos.fiddlershop.com/products/fiddlerman-artist-violin-outfit?_pos=2&_sid=14148003c&_ss=r
I do like your review of this strings :). I wonder how hard is it for kids fingers? (An 11 years old boy). I want to buy it soon for his birthday 🥳 :)). I will be grateful for respons :).
Thanks for watching! PI strings have a synthetic core and will feel softer under the fingers than steel core strings. If they are using a nice quality 4/4 violin, they would be a great choice!
If I order the Concert Deluxe Violin and want to order these strings to have put on it, how would I let you guys know? Would I just call after I place the order?
@@Fiddlershop How long do they last? And what are the warmest strings you have because im looking for a super warm sound i am verry intrested in the pi's right now
The PI strings are really powerful and direct. The Fiddlerman strings are not nearly as strong, and are a bit sweeter/brighter in tone. But, at about $100 cheaper per set, not a bad set of strings at all.
Holy crap I’m shitting my pants I need them right now for my new violin. It’s a super bright violin with superb brilliance but need more complexity in the sound. I need them I need them damn 😭
Hi Alan, for sure-I know it's time to balance things out. Actually the next set I have installed are the "Old Fiddler String Set" for about $23, so it's coming soon. And I appreciate the kind words :-)
Fast forward to the future, Peter Infeld has "downgraded" to be NOT the most expensive violin strings by several notches. Comparing Al and Ag D string, I feel Al D is not as bright and softer.
I don't think there is one perfect string set for all compositions. Because each brand / model has different tones / colors. I prefer mix. But personally I love the tone/color of Obligato.
@@Fiddlershop ordinarily that would not be heard? i didn't mean to criticize your playing ive heard that sound coming out of the most famous soloists is that just normal?
For a while I was going back and forth between Vision Solo Titanium and PI strings on my personal violin, sometimes I thought the Visions had slightly more broad, or warmth, and the PI's had more focus and dazzle, but they are pretty close!
@@Fiddlershop Thanks. Only now I'm reading your response, UA-cam didn't give me an alert. From my experience (I've been trying PIs for the fist time in the last 3 days), I agree PIs have more dazzle, but Ive found Titanium Solo to be brighter and strident, while PIs are a little bit "darker" and more resonant.
Thanks for watching! It may be possible, but you won't know until you try them out. Each instrument will respond differently to string changes :)
Thanks again, I’ve just ordered!
Fantastic! Thanks for shopping with us!
Always interesting - always entertaining!
Gee thanks!
Still obligato like sweet scream in high notes also in lowest too
Well I've got a quite bright and projective violin by itself would you recommend those strings to support even more that character or the obligato for a more warm and dark sound?
@@Fiddlershop Thank you very much!!
What violin do you use to test strings on?
I'm using the Fiddlerman Artist violin and Holstein 2-star bow in all of these string videos.fiddlershop.com/products/fiddlerman-artist-violin-outfit?_pos=2&_sid=14148003c&_ss=r
Superior entertainment. Thanks. Have the viola version and they are admirable..
Thanks for your kind words!!
Lmao what a coincidence. Yesterday I came to your channel to see if you made a video about them
I'm glad you found this just in time!
Do you have a comparison for this PI 100 vs Larsen Tzigane?
I don't believe I ever played those in the same video, but that would be an interesting comparison.
If I order the Concert Deluxe Violin and want to order these strings to have put on it, how would I let you guys know? Would I just call after I place the order?
Hi Christie! Yes, you can call us or email us at support@fiddlershop.com Thanks for asking!!
I would like to try obligatos with PI E string. These GDA are too much power for my violin 🎻
Please let us know if you do 😃
Oh I saw they r purple hahahah is a sign that will me amazing on my violin this tone is how I imagine it. I'll research on those in kind of in love
Love the sound! Wanna get theese but they are so expensive
Hi Keith! Yes, they are expensive but sooooo magical. We do price match, if that would make a difference.
@@Fiddlershop How long do they last? And what are the warmest strings you have because im looking for a super warm sound i am verry intrested in the pi's right now
And how long they last until u need to change
No wonder Peter broke up with Micheal, he was playing around with Red and Dominant-rix at the same time. 11:05
Thanks for watching!
A melhor até agora som maravilhoso e elegante ....
Muito obrigado!
I know you said these are your favorite, for the Master violin... These vs. Larson il canonne
Oooh, I should have thrown those on the comparison part.
How do these strings compare to Fiddlerman strings?
The PI strings are really powerful and direct. The Fiddlerman strings are not nearly as strong, and are a bit sweeter/brighter in tone. But, at about $100 cheaper per set, not a bad set of strings at all.
does anyone know what the "a little bit more meteor" mean in 8:17?? /(ㄒoㄒ)/~~
"meatier" hahahahahahahaha
Could someone please tell me the name of the piece he's playing?!! My brain is tired of looking for it
Found it! Looked through all the comments haha it's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D. Can rest in piece now 😪
Happy to hear!!
Holy crap I’m shitting my pants I need them right now for my new violin. It’s a super bright violin with superb brilliance but need more complexity in the sound. I need them I need them damn 😭
Will you ever review super cheap strings? I'm talking like
Hi Alan, for sure-I know it's time to balance things out. Actually the next set I have installed are the "Old Fiddler String Set" for about $23, so it's coming soon. And I appreciate the kind words :-)
@@Fiddlershop Thanks, I look forward to more great content!
I find them wonderful on modern instruments.
Happy to hear!!
How they keep the tunning?
I feel incompetent because idk the name of the song he plays in every demo but i always hear it
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D
Fast forward to the future, Peter Infeld has "downgraded" to be NOT the most expensive violin strings by several notches.
Comparing Al and Ag D string, I feel Al D is not as bright and softer.
Thanks for watching!
I don't think there is one perfect string set for all compositions. Because each brand / model has different tones / colors. I prefer mix. But personally I love the tone/color of Obligato.
Agreed! Thanks for sharing, Avni! :)
@@Fiddlershop May I ask you to review Pirastro Flexocor Permanent? If posssible..
Is this titanium E string
Shlomo Mintz told me that in his opinion these are the best strings available!
The Peter Infeld are a great set of strings! We set up some of the higher level instruments with PIs. Thanks for watching!
Could you play the Pink Panther theme on a viola?
If you play violas. You are fiddles.
Thanks for watching! Pretty sure Michael can play it on viola :)
Sweetie PI!!!!!!
Perfeckttttttttttttt
Thaaaaaaanks! 😃😃
I bought the Peter Enfeld model after watching this video
DO THEY COME IN DIFFERENT GAUGES?
OMG WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING? NO, THEY ONLY COME IN MEDIUM TENSION!
I AM DISABLED, THATS WHY
Wow
Those text messages 🤣😂🤣😂
i hate that jzishy clicky sound when your bow changes direction
That's fair, just keep in mind the mic is only about 3 ft away from me, and it's a pretty boomy room.
@@Fiddlershop ordinarily that would not be heard?
i didn't mean to criticize your playing
ive heard that sound coming out of the most famous soloists
is that just normal?
@@roman14032 it’s normal for good players. I guess you don’t like violin?
How do they compare to Titanium Solo?
I prefer the PIs, they also feel a lot better under the fingers.
I will leave the Larsen gold Cannone to the wealthy 🤪🎻
Ha ha! Thanks for watching!
eww, goo goo dolls / i guess, im blowin money on these
haha...I know.
@@OGibbles do you ever get any whistling on these strings?
