I really miss the tapedeck era! You had so many choices on what deck ,brands,& features you could choose from!!!! And It was fun to play ,record & playback sounds good though!

You are so right with the Sony first.
Before that reporters used the Uher 4000. They were good.... but heavy. And power hungry. And mono. And used reels (not cassette). And repairable by technicians only. And didn't like sand. Or hot - or cold - climates.
You see where we are going here. This Sony was a revolution in every way but it wasn't cheap.
    Another great video.
Oh, in Dorset, England we had heavy Snow closing the main road to the South West (A 35).
It's all melted now, thank goodness.

Thanks for reminding me why I have a similar unit sitting in my basement for over a year now that I haven't bothered to tear into lol. Once again, great video.

In this case I see no reason to go for a bigger gauge wire. Or maybe even connectors, for the easy of repair. But electronics manufacturers from that era did not take in to account that there were people smart enough to repair things :) Ow and btw... you called it :D BTW those speakers cost nearly nothing on aliexpress. And for the counter. Maybe take it out, clean it (deoxit, IPA) and then use a decent amount of silicone lube and put it back. Might work.

Did the pinch roller spring tension seem ok. Looked a little light when You were cleaning on it...
Try a 32 ohm speaker out of a Telephone base.??? Looks to be about the same size..

i have had similar issue, so i would just recommend to change that belt - its in shape and i bet hardened a bit, that can totally cause issues. Cheers

There are some of those things that ya have to draw the line. Not all things are repairable. This allows ya to use parts in other electronics. Your friend, Jeff.

You could try blowing out the counter with compressed air or getting a drop of lube into it. The belt did look like it had some deformation so maybe a new one might fix the resistance as well? Why not replace the speaker with another one of similar diameter? It doesn't have to be the exact same original part does it?

I mean, only if someone wants to buy it that bad ... other than that, it's just not worth it. We're not recording anything on tape in 2024.

@@Shadepariah then why do the repair at all? obviously some people are interested in tapes still. Not everything is done for money.

I can rule the world, if I can only get the parts! My internal security dept. had two of those, new in the box that were never used, and were scrapped in favor of tascam digital recorders.

These were made to a high standard, compared to the entry level ones, but their compact size makes them hard to repair Finding anything other than some belts will be nigh on impossible.

Yes I know. Good luck finding the motor for example.

I always take a good high resolution photo of the pcb and wires 1st in case I break one off.
I have a Sony TCM-280 with wires that are almost the size of human hair.
I always wanted one of these.
Agreed…eBay sellers asking way too much for what these are worth.

    Right! Those are cool.
Edit: I didn't watch it all, but the pause button may cause issues.
Ok, maybe not in this case. But I had a problem with a sticking pause mechanism.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 днів тому

Fancy Sony using a rim drive for this. I assume that does everything - fast spooling, take up and capstan? I can't see another motor in there so I guess is must.
