lost my father in the war and joined the service as a respect to him. served 36 years and still this is a fantastic sight, you yanks know much more than any other nation when it comes to respecting those who gave for their country. God Bless you all. From a Brit!!!
Just did a honor flight on the 23rd. Was my first time attending one. It was a blast, and quite an amazing thing seeing one of the Tuskegee Airmen come through and a honor to salute him. If you have the opportunity to participate or be a bystander I would highly recommend it. So many people showed up. Overall great experience, feeling.
They may not be as young as they use to be but everyone one of them has a warriors heart and well done for showing these warriors the respect they deserve
I went back to DC last May and saw the WWII Memorial for the first time (I grew up there many years ago). I knew nothing about the Honor Flights and suddenly the place was crawling with Vets from Texas. They were stunned by everyone making such a fuss, even teenagers holding 'Thank You' signs. All I heard were "Anyone would have done it" and "We were nothing special." Indeed they were our Greatest Generation.
Wish I could have been there. Those men were truly from the greatest generation. My grandfather was part of them and fought in Europe and Africa including D-Day. I truly miss him and wish I was old enough to have talked to him about his service. At the time he was just my Papa and I didn't know or understand what he had done.
i respect you brits too, carrying on the fight alone for a year. My grandmother was from Liverpool and my grandfather was in the US Army Air Corps, she never became a US citizen and stayed loyal to the crown. My grandparents were the best human beings i ever knew. Much respect to you Brits! God save the Queen!
What I find the most humbling about WWII Veterans is that they always claim "I was just doing my job". Well, that may be so. But in doing that job, regardless how small a role you played, you helped prevent evil from taking our freedom and shaped the world into what it is today. I ALWAYS make time to listen to a veteran and will ALWAYS make way for them. They bow to no one.
What a fantastic welcome home; great job, Chicago! I had the privilege of participating in one of the Chicago Honor Flights in July. It was a great experience escorting one of these heroes for the day.
I love the fact that these very special men and women who fought in WWII are being honored for their GIFT to us all. That being FREEDOM and LIBERTY. I am sad that my own Father was never able to see and do this, as he passed away in 2000. Being a Transport and Glider Pilot, he most likely would have wanted to be up in the cockpit. As this is Chicago, I will have to ask my Uncle who lives there, if he has had this honor yet, as he served in the US NAVY SeaBees in WWII.
Thanks to all vets from wwll as well as Korea Vietnam and all current ones that I support u all thru hard times and great ones as well thanks for keeping America safe from then to now and forever .wish my dad had flown out to see the vets memorial in D.C. he's looking over all of us with his brothers and sisters god bless u all
That generation is what every generation should try and reach. What they did was incredible in a very dark period of the world. Need make sure their legacy lives on for all to know.
@ JizzTechCo......The tune the pipers are playing is Balmoral......the pipers and drummers are members of the Chicago Fire Department Pipes & Drums, Chicago Police Department Pipes & Drums and the Naperville IL Fire Department Highland Guard....... These bands are regular participants in Honor Flight Chicago
What is the music called being played at the beginning? Anyway, much thanks to these veterans. Without them being there to stop the advance of the Nazis and Japanese, we'd be a completely different world.
