My brother and I used to fish Lake Poygan in Wisconsin, it a pretty big lake being 22 miles long, and 5 miles wide, but the deepest point is only 18 feet, we used an aluminum boat and an old green outboard that we called the one a day, ( if we could get it to start easily once a day we were lucky) the lake is pretty open and I've seen it go from dead flat, to waves '4 to '6 feet in as little as 10 seconds, so it pays to keep a sharp eye on the weather. One day we were out some distance from the cabin when I noticed that black clouds were raising pretty fast to the southwest, so I told my brother to reel in as we'd best be getting off the lake, but my brother said why? The fish are biting, so let's get enough for supper. Well just seconds after he said it I began to see lightning, and a herd of dairy cows on shore hightailed it to the barn I reeled in and reached for the engine cord, to my amazement it started on the first pull, and we headed in before we got two hundred yards, the wind came up, the waves kicked up, and a funnel cloud appeared at the West end of the lake. By the time we got in front of the cabin it was so rough that we had two choices, we couldn't try to pull up at the pier because the waves were washing over it, and if we tried we'd get thrown into the rock rip rap. So we would either have to try for the public landing next to the cabin ( it wasn't much, just a gravel road that ran into the lake) or for a channel that was a half mile away, the funnel cloud, looked like it was headed our way, so the channel was out, so I hit the tilt release for the motor, gunned it and headed for the landing just before we hit the shallows I yanked the motor up, and let our momentum carry us up on shore, my dad and my grandfather, grabbed the bow, and carried us up a few more feet we jumped out and hit the cabin, fortunately the funnel cloud stayed to the far side of the lake, and no damage was done, other than a lot of people who got the H scared out of them. But this story doesn't end there, years later I stopped at a tavern on the northwest side of Chicago to grab something to eat and a beer, and I got into a conversation with a group of guys, that were planning a late season trip to Poygan to fish the fall walleye run, I warned them of how volatile the weather could be, particularly that late into the season, and urged them to use extreme caution. A week later I stopped back into that same tavern, and the place went dead quiet, a friend of mines dad owned the place, and my friend was tending bar, so I asked him, if I had done something wrong, he replied, " didn't you hear? The guys you warned about Poygan, didn't listen and they are all dead! It turned out that the three men I warned, and two others had gone out of a resort on the West end of the lake, all five of them were in a single '17 foot open boat, a bad storm moved in( it was late November) and the boat capsized, none of the occupants was wearing a lifevest, they found the upside down boat first, and three of the deceased within a few hours, then another storm came in followed by a hard freeze, and the search for the two missing individuals, had to be called off. In January a group of surgeon spearers found one of them frozen in the ice, and the Sheriff used chain saws to recover his remains, and when the ice went out in April, the remains of the final victim were found at a marina, on the east end of the lake. The moral of this story is you now have a wife and two kids, to think about, ( particularly since your wife is most times with you) so a weather warning should never be ignored! Even so simple a sign as leaves turning over or animals acting nervous or making for cover, can mean a big change is coming and quickly!

Years ago a storm came while fishing, I beached boat at launch and we waited it out in truck. Cleared up and went back out for couple hours heard a lot of sirens thought lightning must of struck something close by. When leaving turned on radio and heard three people died under a tree in golf course next to lake!!
