    Perhaps the finest saxophone technique on this planet. Ever. I think so.

      naw man, check out some of these mental classical cats. Deborah Richtmeyer and a few others are just completely bananas, but for jazz guys, Chris is it.

      No doubt, great player, great chops, but to me 'technique' goes well beyond that.. I don't think there will every be anyone that surpasses what Trane did in his (short) lifetime. Consummate control of the axe, pure emotion, and absolute committment. Plus he ALWAYS played the blues...

      Selmerpilot Get the hell out of here. No way deborah can conceptualize and execute the shit Chris is.

      agree, but as far as pure technique is concerned many modern classical players have equivalent or greater technical acumen.

    I love Chris style and timing, particular 7-8 min. It would take me 3 hours practice a day to do ONE of his 64note licks, but he wills string together 20

      He’s been a bad cat ever since I can remember. I remember late nights at the Mill hearing him battle for hours on end playing every single lick in the book and still not repeating one thing but playing in his own unique way. This is how everyone who aspires to play should play. I love to hear his thoughts in motion. I can’t ever remember him playing anything that didn’t impress me on another level.

      His sound is so enormous! Unreal. I played once with him with the big band at UT. I thought the band was so loud, and then he came in and literally filled the entire room with his sound on top of the 18 piece band!!

    It would be cool to see him play on the streets like this. Who would recognize his art?

    • @peterjohnstoltzman
      @peterjohnstoltzman 4 роки тому +2

      Joshua Bell the violinist was part of a social experiment like that in the DC subway. Google it, it’s fascinating! Most people don’t realize, and it shows how much social context-venue, expectations, attire, etc-play a role in our experience of “art.”

      Just imagined how Chris learns nowadays, it's hard to find better improvisers on this planet.

    • @promerker1892

      Patrick Gampp I know this is late, but he doesn’t look for better improvisers, he looks for different improvisers. Anything that’s different from his style is something he can learn and incorporate
