"Louise rode home on a mail train...." I remember when "remains" were carried on secondary passenger trains - mail trains - between cities, and watching a casket being unloaded from a baggage car of a train into a waiting hearse is something not easily forgotten. This is such a melancholy song anyway, but that phrase always brings back those memories from the past. Bonnie Raitt does one of the best versions of this song but for those looking for different versions, be sure to look up the version posted by Bob Woolcock on youtube - well worth the listen!
Bonnie is perfect in singing this heart-wrenching song, so beautiful musically, so sad in its tale, sung by many great singers, each in their own way, own style, Bonnie is ideal in her own way!
I love finding versions of outstanding songs, especially emotional ones. This artist and that artist bring out their inner feelings that together help the song grow. It is no longer a song - it is an expression. The wonderful lyrics of 'Louise' and the chord structure help make this a classic in my opinion. Some other examples are 'Proud Mary' which defines CCR then gets ripped by Tina Turner; Peter Sellers' unbelievable version of 'Hard Days Night' takes it to a new realm, as does John Farnham's (and others) version of 'Help'. What a beautiful and haunting version of 'Louise'. Thank you for posting. 🙂
This is my favorite version of this song. Thanks for posting. Johnny Lee's harmony vocal is exquisitely beautiful as is David's slide work on the Dobro.

Great song, and Bonnie’s version as good as any! Paul Siebel would love it too, and feel proud.. ❤

Is that David Bromberg playing the dobro ?
Yep, it's also in the description beneath the video.🙂
This is a good version, but I *still* prefer the live version on "Road Tested."
