Maybe I'm in the wrong forum completely, but can someone explain to me why Japanese muskets and arquebuses don't have stocks? I figure a slightly different stance/bracing technique developed in Japan but I never understood quite what it was and how it was different.
From what I understand of it, when the Portuguese introduced the musket to Japan it was a shorter version designed for use on ships. The muskets used for land warfare in Europe not only had shoulder stocks, but also had much longer barrels than the ones introduced to Japan.
@@mezzmainia never heard it was portagual......I'm Japanese,we had muskets as soon as black powder showed up from china. The first large scale use of firearms in combat was the Japanese 3 way civil way in the 1300s by then they had already had firearms for few hundred years and were well versed in tactical use.......it was deemed to have no honor in musket combat because of the large death toll and guns were relegated to hunting and castle defense
@@jacobishii6121 Being so close to China, gunpowder was bound to become used in japan from as early as it could. However, the first recognisable musket came about in the mid 1500s when some Portuguese were force to land at Tanegashima because of a storm. The handguns prior to this in japan were effectively miniaturised cannon on sticks (hand cannon), which is why they were left primarily for castle defence as they were cumbersome and inaccurate even compared to muskets. Europe had a similar developmental process in guns, starting with small cannon on sticks then making them more complex with progressively more reliable firing mechanisms.

In Brazil this kind of cerimonial shooting is performed by "bacamarteiros", as a cultural heritage from the portuguese too.
