Ian Sinclair is the voice actor for the Dub narrator and as a person who's been into anime for well over a decade I can assure you he's not just amazing in this, he's genuinely one of the best English VAs because he is always giving 110% in every role, he plays a character called Brook in the anime of One Piece and that character has such a vaste range of emotion and Ian captures it perfectly (also he's a really good singer)
My first exposure to him was Zapp Renfro from Blood Blockade Battlefront, and honestly, he's become my favorite. Everything he's in, if he's goofy, he's hilarious. When he's serious, he's badass. When he's villainous, he's intimidating or terrifying. Legend.
My first exposure to him was as Berkut, one of the single best villains in the Fire Emblem series, where his voice acting is miles above the already good voice acting from everybody else in the game. Absolutely unreal.
2:23 That's why she appears as the Joker card in op1. She's always so unpredictable, meaning she can be the one that turns the game to your favour, or the one that will doom your strategy.
@@linkedwintersI'm super late, but I definitely read it as Ishigami being nominally the lowest valued card (1) as him not being valued as highly as the other members (according to himself), even though the ace is the highest value card in poker and having an ace up your sleeve is synonymous with having the advantage (as Ishigami is actually very valued by the other members and he's a sweet guy despite his attitude)
Best part about the characters, Chika who is supposed to be the "3rd Wheel CHaracter" and she is shown to be dumb and airheaded, however in S1 she said to know (I think) 6ish languages, and also in one episode she is shown quite literally gaslight, and emotionally manipulate her friends Kaguya just to win a board game She isn't dumb, she just doesn't understand what those two are doing because if she had to confess something she would say it out right Which I think is very funny making her one of the smartest and chaotic Also Best Boy Ishigami for life
@Waves pretty sure its implied that she is a genius at any instrument showing while everyone in the student council should be considered "smart" they are not when it comes to social interactions
And the best part is that the manga continues to get better and better. The current Arc is so intriguing and amazing, so if you can't wait for the next season I highly recommend reading the manga!!!!
My shortest way to describe this show is "If Death Note was a rom-com." Not perfectly accurate, but it turns heads and perfectly defines the charm of the show's premise imo
Good way to describe it tbh. Death Note starts to flail near the end due to how ridiculous and stupid the plot points and schemes get. But in Love is War? Kaguya using a bunch of resources to convince Shirogane to buy a cell phone or to keep people out of a room is just plain hilarious. Stupid and overly complicated is what makes this show so excellent. Not to mention the narrator passing it all off as seriously as possible consistently has me dying of laughter.
Fun fact! The guy who sang the first season OP came out of retirement to do the song! Not only that, he's SUPER famous. He's kind of like their Frank Sinatra of Japan.
I love how when Kaguya is sick she casually mentions wanting fireworks and then in the season 1 finally we see how much seeing fireworks mean to her. It’s such a great little detail that I appreciate
She also lost her blank state of mind because of the fireworks mention in ep10, but there's more to that. The best part is when she is now finally able to watch the fireworks, she didn't even give them a glance and only looked at the most important thing to her life.
I love how most rom-coms they don’t confess because they’re not sure whether the other person likes them and are afraid of rejection. Meanwhile! In Kayuga-Sama they don’t confess because they’re ABSOLUTELY Positive that the other person is deeply infatuated with them and is on the EDGE of confessing their feelings and out of pure pride refuse too be the one to do so! ps Schaff If you liked this you should watch HoriMiya next. It’s much less comedic but has the same energy and is wholesome as heck!
It's actually a different reason if you read the manga. Miyuki has a completely other reason which makes him one of the best romcom protagonists of all time and flips the meaning of the show on its head
@@thevioletbee5879 agreed, everything with the main couple of Horimiya was what made it great the first half, while all the melodrama in the second half brought it down for me
Love is War is a series that can be enjoyed for equal but different reasons if you go with the sub or dub, and the narrator in the English dub is one of the main reasons for that
I'll be real, even though I love Ian Sinclair, I really hated his portrayal of the narrator and it's the main reason I couldn't even get through a single episode of the dub. No shade to anyone who loved it, but that's just my feelings on it
As a manga reader i have to say it gets so much better in every direction - comedy, romance, tragedy, character development, characters relationships... Its magnum opus of romance genre anime
Okay, I'll be real, past season 3 there will be quite a few questionable arcs. But at the same time, I think post season 3 material has some of the best moments in the entire series, especially with Iino.
The studio is not really important, the staff is what really matters. In this case the director of Kaguya is Shinichi Omata, he is probably the best Anime director working today, he is the main reason why Kaguya-sama is so good, together with the original material and its creator obviously.
You know the manga is good when the author basically looked at the erotic spinoff and said this is weak ima just make something better this coming chapter
@@Bello_6 you know the main series is good when the erotica spin off just turns into side stories and AUs of the main story *without* any fanservice. None.
I just want to say that your description of A-1 is spot on. They are known for picking *a lot* of anime per season and didn't giving much effort to any of them. But when some guy there is passionate about a certain manga, he gatheres up the boys and they *fucking deliver,* man. Kaguya and Your Lie in April are the best examples of this.
@@danielleiva3628 regardless on how you feel about the story (I, too, have my gripes with it), the production in YLIA is *absolutely insane* and one of the best of A-1 by a lot.
The A1 thing actually shows that the staff is more important than the studio. Some studios have cultivated in house directors and staff that are fantastic and are a big reason why those studios are so consistently high quality, and then you have A1 which varies wildly in quality depending on what staff they grabbed for a given show
A great aspect about this series is the platonic relationships between men and women. Kaguya and Ishigami are really close but there is never a moment where it's used as drama. Same with Shirogane and Iino, jokes are absolutely done about it but that's it. Not a single second of love triangle bs.
@@nightshade2826 well at least, there's never much dramatic interactions, but there was one chapter where some some characters decided who to ship person A of the love triangle with who. (Not spoiling)
There was that one episode where Ishigami, Shirogane, and Kaguya suffer from "shoujo manga syndrome" and it briefly turned into a love triangle between all 3, but its mostly played for laughs and also used to mock stories that use love triangles.
Regarding studios, directors and individual talent have way more of a part in making anime good. The studio mostly will act as the contractor. Kaguya-Sama is directed by Shinichi Omata who is extremely prolific. Key staff for most anime studios isn't fixed and freelancers are utilized quite a lot.
He really needs to watch Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu in order to witness how Omata is a great director (probably superior to his mentor Shinbo from Shaft) if he keeps on making more interesting stuff in the future. Also, not to watch the series finale of Rakugo since it's a tad controversial
@@diegonatan6301 yeah, but not all studios can afford certain members. For example: the veteran animator Yukata Nakamura is usually seen in studio Bones productions, yet his mastery can be seen in more shows outside (avoiding the obvious example of Cowboy Bebop, since Bones was created by staff from Sunrise). Director Masaaki Yuasa had worked as a freelancer in very few studios (4C and Madhouse) before funding his own studio, though he left that a couple years ago. Kyoani worked almost exclusively with the same professional and well paid people, except in the script department, where there's a plethora of _(mostly bad)_ screenwriters
@@renixmar3373 Yeah, lmao. Hayasaka solo chapters are great, but her arc was meh at best. Hayasaka is a curious case, where you have an interesting character... but author doesn't do anything interesting with it.
@@anonymousx2394 it drag on and the cutting up part was cringe. It was also at a time when ppl where hungry for more prez/kaguya or even ishigami stuff (rare) and her arc dropped out of nowhere
As someone who's caught up with the manga, I can say with confidence will be one of, if not the, best seasons of this show. It shifts to a more serial narrative instead of being episodic like S1, Hayasaka gets a multi-episode arc which is pog, and the culture festival, the supposed finale arc for this season, has, without legitimate contest, the most beautiful and heartfelt panel/scene in the entire series. We eat good in April bois.
@@justaloaf2698 i mean not really. If it was then I wouldn't have kept reading. But the aftermath of cultural festival, plus the thing with Ishigami, the field trip, and miko's redemption arc are all super solid
@@justaloaf2698 personally didnt agree with some of the character and plot decisions moving forward, and some arcs started off kinda weak or just kinda didnt really happen at all when they really should have, but personally i thought the manga overall is still great. certainly worth the read if you enjoyed the anime: akasaka is no slouch when it comes to writing. im also gonna be a loner forever in saying this apparently, but...rule-stickler miko is already a great lovable character lol. i dont really see why people say she needed a change of character. an arc, definitely, but not a 180. i liked seeing her contrast with everyone else - she stood out more to me that way.
One of the great things about love is war is how romance is not all that matters. Even between the five different council members, each different possible pairings have a different dynamic between them. And miyuki is the most goated romance protagonist i have ever seen. My guy climbed the social status in a school filled with elites and prodigies, and only in a year, hes not only an equal to his peers, he went beyond that and became their idol. Tamed down a girl born and raised to be a heartless capitalist overlord, won the reelection despite handicapping himself by helping his opponent on stage, pretty much saved ishigami's life, and so on and so forth in the manga spoiler territory. I didnt expect such depths on a character from a show with an entire segment about weiner jokes and underwear debate.
Jesus fucking christ the bots, if only yt did something about actual problems like this instead of fixing things that didnt need fixing like the dislike button
It might be the only anime where you'll see a boy and a girl "romantically" trying to feed eachother cake whilst screaming at eachother to just let them shove it in their mouth.
My god, the bots here are getting more and more insane. When will UA-cam do something about these disgusting p//o//r//n bots? Especially on channels aimed at a younger audiance like Game Theory?
Regarding your questions about studios and A-1, in japan, a good adaptation does not depend on the studio itself but rather the director and its connections. If you get a well renowned director for an anime you'll probably get quite a few of his friends as screenwriters, producer, animation director, etc. who are probably the best in the industry. There's very few studios that keep a consistent staff like UFOtable or Shaft but the vast majority are freelancers
The best episode is all of the ones where Chika has to teach Shirogane how to do something, they're all fantastic. Especially the singing one, that one made me smile so hard it physically hurt, it was truly wonderful
Now that you've been drawn into the beautiful, wacky world of anime, let me make a recommendation: Akira is a timeless classic that heavily inspired the cyberpunk genre and is still deemed as one of the greats. Another one of my favourites is Mop Psycho 100. What I love about this one is the art direction, sound design and the masterclass of a character mob is. I think you would really enjoy them and I'd love to see your opinion in a video! Love that you enjoyed kaguya-sama as much as I did :)
Yeah Mob Psycho has a similar feel to it's humor and storytelling to Kaguya. Schaff could enjoy it Edit: I'm gonna add in Space Dandy as well as a recommendation
+ to schaff if he reads this reply: If you're interested in romance comedy slice of life, I also recommend wotokoi, love is hard for otaku, but I only recommend it only after being heavily invested in ALOT of anime and manga
If you like “A Silent Voice” I highly recommend checking out “To Your Eternity” It was written by the same woman and holds just as much power in its writing. The anime came out just last season and there hasn’t been nearly enough appreciation for it. There’s like 2 good videos about it on UA-cam that I’ve seen.
@@JoNarDLoLz some characters never appear in the movie and some arcs were cut out. I would say watching the movie is the better experience before reading the manga. The manga readers would have a harder time getting into the movie from its cuts and would say it's not that good.
@@JoNarDLoLz I don't know how it is for everyone, but I stopped reading around 140 chapters because I kinda just didn't care anymore. The series drags on without really going anywhere or saying anything, the rotating side characters start getting tiring, and, if this is meant to simulate life as an immortal for the reader, great! I don't want it!
This show is just deathnote but a romcom Deathnote is seriously just a guy writing names and talking to people while pretending he isn’t writing names. The potato chip scene fits in perfectly with this series and you can’t convince me otherwise.
Generally comparing A1 to Dreamworks is on point. Sometimes they release the best shows ever, and sometimes the worst shows you will see all season (or year even). Here are three sample shows, in rising order of importance (not quality) Darling in the Franxx - a mecha show from 2018, collaboration woth studio Trigger, that was supposed to save the dying mecha genre. As it went on, the quality of writing started dropping, and by the end it became a complete dumpster fire, universally hated by the viewers. The latter half of the show was mostly handled by A1 or it's (at the time) subsidiary CloverWorks. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day - a drama series created in 2011. Generally considered one of the best dramas of the last decade, lauded for it's story, art and direction. Conditioned hundredes into crying when they hear it's ending theme. And finally - Sword Art Online, released in 2011, universally hated by anime fans the world over, while simultaneously being basically the most impactful anime OF THIS CENTURY (so far at least). SAO is credited with singlehandedly changing the anime landscape, and kickstarting the current "isekai" trend - stories in which the main character is transported into another world. While it wasn't the first story of it's kind, it opened the gates for a flood of low-quality wish-fulfillment power fantasies, with bland OP protagonists surrounded by harems of cookie-cutter female character archetypes.
The thing about Darling in the Franxx is it's EXTREMELY overstated its A-1 in itselfs fault. A lot of Trigger and A-1 is ex-Gainax, which is often known for tumbling in a downward spiral towards the third act in plenty of their shows. Super(hero) style Mecha shows can just insert a lot of hype and spectacle like Gurren Lagann and Gunbuster can go through it, but more existiential and grounded stuff can't like Evangelion's infamous budget drain or Kare Kano becoming a slideshow. So a lot of it was veterans' guidance brewing old habits. You can even see this in BNA and Promare having not only extremely similar plot points to each other, but nearly the exact same SPOILERSlolalienancientsSPOILERS twist as Franxx and KLK.
well just made clear that not all isekais are like the ones you described in the SAO section - there are pretty Good and Masterpieces isekais out there - re zero, mushoku tensei, Slime and the list goes on
Tbh, I don't really think the quality stamp fits for any studio, with the exception of Kyoto animation, Ghibli, Madhouse and maybe Bones... but aside from that many studios are rather mixed most of the time, A1, Wit, Mappa, P.A. they have classics and just plain bad stuff... it honestly just depends on who they hire, KyoAni and Ghibli are more resistant to that curse by internally educating and stuff but for the others it really depends... and sometimes you need to make a cheap production and hire an inexperienced team that has to overwork... that's the anime industry
That tragic backstory you talked about, holy crap that got to me. I won’t spoil it, but as someone who has very similar issues I can relate. I’m glad that their friends are what helped them in the end… I’m still trying to find those friends irl but that’s not the point. I shall expect more anime/manga analyses in the future.
In anime the director, key animators, etc. generally matter a lot more than the studio. Also, A1 pictures has some really amazing shows like Your Lie in April
I do find it fascinating how this is the one you'd get into as someone who generally doesn't watch anime. Thrilled, but fascinated. It has a lot of parody elements based on other anime and other genres in anime, as does komi can't communicate (I saw it flash by when you mentioned watching other anime after). So it's nice to see that a lot of the jokes still land even for someone relative new to anime.
Komi Can't Communicate is a garbage parody anime. Can it really be considered parody when the show does nothing but repeat the jokes of its predecessors? Thats just a gag anime at that point. Every character has their one shitty joke, even Komi herself, and the show never does anything interesting with it.
@@norwa3518 it's funny you say that, as the manga came out roughly at the same time as Kaguya-sama, so a lot of the anime's "predecessors" aren't actually quite that. I admit they like to lay it on thick, but personally I enjoyed it. Less than Kaguya, but there've been plenty of anime that felt like a much bigger waste of time. But I'm long past the age where I used to enjoy trying to convince strangers on the internet, so if you don't like it, that's fine. Maybe try to voice your opinion as that, an opinion. Rather than hyperbolized fact. Have a nice day.
Ishigami is my fave character just because of how relatable he is. He clearly has a good heart and is very thoughtful but he’s also meek, socially awkward and too blunt to a fault. His arc in S2 made me so sad but also so proud of him for coming out of his shell more and showing how righteous and good natures he is
The writing in this show is actually genius. The comedy is never just random gags. It's always psychological, written in such a way that it develops the characters and their relationships so naturally, when you'd normally expect the comedy to stop to do it. This series manages to balance comedy, drama, character development, and romance, even down to each pair's chemistry, all at the same time to an S-tier level perfectly. Also, Miko is best girl. Hayasaka is overrated. Fight me.
HEYHEY now, that's quite the dangerous take you got there to be honest, after the manga, I cannot choose best girl, they're all so, so well developed and interesting it'd be unfair to put one above the other, and that applies to the boys too edit: Chika is still an eldritch monster though
Had to make a double-take when I got the notification for this. An anituber I love had a similar way to title his anime recommendations and my sleep deprived mind thought this was another channel's video. Schaffrillas making a Kaguya-Sama: Love is War video is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
I think there's a whole joke about A-1 pictures that they earned so much money from SAO, they are pumping out shows left and right, and occasionally hit a gold mine, just like SAO. But it's clear they put more effort into some shows over others. The animation of SAO season 3 was extremely beautiful. Your Lie in April I also remember looking very beautiful. As for the hierarchy of anime studios, Ufotable is above all others in terms of action. Heck, even their slice of life (that one anime where all the Fate characters are just hanging out and making food) has such a pleasing art style and animation. Right now, MAPPA is another hyped anime studio, but they are not doing it for me like WIT with aot. Though poor WIT needs a break. MAPPA too, though. I must say I personally like studio Bones a lot.
I heard some rumor or speculation that wit is still going bankrupt so don’t know how they gonna recover. mappa i can say for sure that chainsaw man would be good cause at least it didn’t get the hell hole treatment that is aot schedule and also it got more talented director, don’t know if the future anime will be good.
A-1 is DEFINITELY the dreamworks of japan, they've made some pretty bad shows but dangg they made bangers like "Your Lie in April," "Erased," and "Love is Hard for an Otaku"
OH snap schaff is talking about a non mainstream anime? Sweet (P.s. Ik this show is very popular within the anime community, what i mean is that it's popularity mostly doesn't extend outside of these circles unlike ghibli movies or death note)
@@Homodemon can you not? if you really think this is mediocre, mainstream blandness, why are you gatekeeping it? its a better use of time for all of us if you return to the mal elitist circle for apple-polishing holy mother of yuri or legend of the galactic hero. please.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a fantastic anime series and quickly became one of my top 10 favorites of all time shortly after I finished season 2. (It's currently at #5 on my favorites list) I watched it dubbed first because I knew some of the voice actors, and I have to say that this is one of the best-dubbed anime I've seen in a long time. Every character, especially the narrator, is hilarious to see. I haven't seen the subbed version yet, but I plan on doing so in the near future. This show is one of the greatest comedy series that I've ever seen, as it had me laughing out loud more than any other comedy series has. (aside from Ouran High School Host Club) For me personally, it's really rare for me to be laughing along with the events of a show/movie, so when I find something that makes me laugh, then I know it's gotta be good and I stick to it for a long time to come.
Oh my god I swear I will break these bots kneecaps and eat their flesh and then I would let them slowly bleed out and then start to chop off their limbs
If you’re starting to get into anime I definitely recommend “Mob Psycho 100”, it’s very funny and very down to earth and the animation is amazing, it’s all around just an amazing show and knowing you (to the extent a viewer can know a creator, of course) I think you would have a great time watching it :)
@@Homodemon I would love to read the manga but unfortunately I can’t afford it in full, there’s a bunch I want to read that I either can’t find access to or afford access to, some day though I will get around to them
Honestly, one thing I appreciate about this show is it doesn't have too many unnecessary pervy moments. There is like one part about Chikas boobas but it was plot related and that is about it so far. Even shows like Komi, Toradora, Nagatoro, etc have a glut of these fan service scenes that make it hard to suggest them as a normal show to watch. Anime like JJK, Mob Psycho, and Kaguya-Sama are honestly doing so much to push anime beyond the stereotypes. It is nice to not just suggest Your Name and Steins Gate to people
@@lilili765 in the manga it was a joke, satire of ecchi anime. The idea was, to avoid being classified as hentai anime, the ecchi stuff will often put everything on screen, but censored in creative ways. But the OVA didn’t do enough of that creative censorship to really come across as satire. It just came across as out of nowhere, crazy fanservice. The kind you can’t watch in polite company. Personally, I think they should have adapted Ishigami’s fever dream instead, the special chapter that was a satire of harem anime.
The English dub of this show is a journey everyone must undergo. If the original was like a chess match of intellectuals, the dub is just constant chaotic energy.
just watching and/or liking anime doesn't automatically make you a weeb tho, a weeaboo is someone obsessed with Japanese culture, sometimes to the point where they denounce their own and wish they were Japanese themselves. schaff is likely just a guy who watches anime, so i'm not sure if it's appropriate to call him a weeb
@@ellieanated I’m so tired of people calling me a weeb just because I enjoy watching anime and manga, they use ‘weeb’ as an insult and I hate how others use it on people with the slightest contact with anime

I must say that the Kaguya Sama dub is definitely one of the better ones out there. Dubs have had a massive improvement over the last decade. Personally I prefer the sub as I feel like it captures the shows nature a bit better, though both are pretty excellent. The way the dub handles the narrator is also really unique. It sets a very different mood for the show. It trades in a bit of the seriousness for more comedy, which definitely has an effect on the show. Both directions are very good though as said I prefer the feel of the sub more as I feel most of the emotion, comedy and expression should come from the characters we get to watch and not the narrator. Don’t get me wrong, the dub narrator works and is absolutely funny as all hell, I just happen to prefer chad Japanese man. Not to mention the sub narrator can also be very funny. Both the sub and dub are excellent, though the sub pulls of the theme better if you ask me. Why did I spend so much time writing this? At 12:00 am no less. I just get really passionate when someone talks about something very close to me. Would not mind seeing more videos like this. (Also, Kaguya Sama is the best romcom anime out there and no it’s not up for debate).
I have to thank you wholeheartedly for this. I had seen bits and pieces about this from the memes it's spawned, but I never really thought it was up my alley. Well, I've finished the subbed version and am currently halfway through the dubbed version of episode one, where the narrator just completely broke me and I needed to come write this to calm down for a moment. It's amazing
one thing i adore about the show as it goes on is that despite both being geniuses at the end of the day, both Kaguya and Shirogane are awkward teens that just want to admit to each other they care about one another. Its really heartwarming. Also Ishigami best boy
Since you love Majora's Mask so much, you would love the anime "The Tatami Galaxy". It follows a university student in a time loop. Each loop starts with him choosing a club, and then ends with him somehow falling into despair and resetting. Each episode follows him during his two years in the club he has chosen and how that one choice leads to him getting to form different connections to people, as well as seeing very different sides of the same people. It might seem repetitive, but without spoiling anything, it leads to some of the strongest catharsis I've ever personally experienced in a piece of art. Speaking of art, it's in my opinion one of the most good-looking anime shows ever made, with fantastic direction and unmatched levels of creativity in terms of visually presenting its emotions and ideas. The soundtrack is also beautiful, and the show is both very funny and very emotional.
You should try Saiki Kusuo. A guy that was born all powerful with all kinds of powers, and he just wants to be normal and is extremely bored. I'm not good at explaining but It's Hilarious.
If you are looking for a comedy anime similiar to kaguya than i highly recommend watching "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K." and "Gintama". Both are comedy gold with varying selection of side characters and very rarely use the typical anime jokes (touch boob = funny). However it might be easier to get into Saiki since Gintama is long af.
Saiki is so fucking good! I rarely see people talk about it, but to be honest it's one of my favorite animes. Just constant chaotic fun is so great and rewatchable.
Schafrillas i have so many recs but i feel like you will absolutely ADORE Ranking of Kings. The openings (that 2nd one especially), animation, story, characters, and overall message are some of the best out there. Bojji is all time best boy. please check it out if you haven't!
this video is the thing that put kaguya sama on my radar of things i need to watch, and now, i've finally finished it. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THIS SHOW SCHAFF I AM FOREVER IN YOUR DEBT 😭😭🙏🙏
If you liked the comedy of "Kaguya-sama: Love is war" I would strongly recommend you "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K". I consider it to be the very best within the comedy genre when it comes to anime (with the exception of Gintama of course which is more or less on the same level for me personally) and you should absolutely watch it. Edit: Also not exactly a comedy per se but I have a feeling you would LOVE "The Melanchony of Haruhi Suzumiya".
Tbh I tried watching the first couple episodes of Saiki K and couldn't stand the style of comedy :( But I'm also pretty picky when it comes to comedy in general. I think the only anime that has EVER made me fully laugh is Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, which is just an amazing anime in general. It should still be on Netflix!
I’m so glad you like this, Schaff. As someone who’s had this series on the top of their list for a long time and has followed the weekly manga excitedly, it comes as a great surprise that this is the first anime you find worthy of a full Schaffrillas Productions review.
"There's some strong dramatic parts in season 1 and especially season 2" As someone who is updated with the manga, this statement holds up extremely well. And I can safely say, the third season of the anime adaptation will blow the entire worlds of Schaffgang away
I honestly think that what makes the anime so great, is the director, Shinichi Omata is the GOAT. Every single work this guy was the main director is art, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is probably the best anime of the 2010s. Sorry for the weird English, still learning ;)
Damn, I was starting to think I should watch this show because UA-cam keeps recommending me hilarious clips, but now I’m reminded that my favorite media review channel loves it?? I really gotta watch it soon huh
This show goes harder than anything else out there. Kaguyas expressed self loathing the Ice Princess she used to be put my own emotions and regrets into words better than I ever could. I was deprived of affection in my formative years and it deeply affected the way I view relationships and people in general, leading me to exploit my peers to get what I need from them without a trace of genuine affection. It’s hard to learn that you are worthy of love especially if you don’t feel deserving of it. Kaguyas gradual transformation into someone who was willing to be loved and love others felt as though it was pulled directly out of my own life, and it was overwhelmingly meaningful to me that I wasn’t alone. Aka Akasaka isn’t only one of the greatest comedic geniuses of the century, he’s also a man who has gained fascinating insight throughout his life who manages to effortlessly weave his poignant experience into his story and characters while maintaining the unhinged tone and personality the characters are known for. How he manages to combine all these story themes and so much more so synergistically truly makes this a story for the ages. Kaguya-Sama is special to me in a way no media will ever be again.
@@fallendown8828 Things did get better for me. You need to be willing to change to improve your life, and like Kaguya, all I needed was to meet the right people to completely flip my myopic and cynical worldview. The value of human connection truly cannot be overstated, and that’s the real emotional core of this show. Thank you for your concern, I really appreciate the comment.
Looks like a lot of fun, if only the UK had some way to watch it... Another great anime that came out recently is Komi Can't Communicate which just had an English dub on Netflix. That show is about a high school boy trying to help a elegant-looking girl with severe social awkwardness make lots of friends, which is not easy task in a school filled with eccentric students. Pretty funny stuff!
Another thing is it's a straight relationship that is actually both believable _and_ healthy! It's a rarity among a lot of animes and shows now-a-days.
I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM FOR SCHAFFRILLA’S WEEB ARC Ouran High School Host Club is definitely another anime to check out, the characters and humor are just as unhinged as Love is War
I am so glad you made a video on this anime. It's an actual masterpiece that everyone should see. Also im so glad for no spoilers for season 2 episode 11, tbh I might have to say that it's one of the greatest episodes ever created. It made my cry like nothing I've ever seen and I couldn't recommend the whole show enough, simply for that episode alone.
I'm so glad you're finally tackling Kaguya-sama: Love Is War! It's one of my favorite anime, especially as of recently. Without getting into spoilers, a lot of people are a bit turned off by the later chapters of the manga, as the tone shifts gradually from comedy to drama the further you go down the story. While I understand that some people are only really into Kaguya for the comedy, I'm personally really into the drama parts as well. The story's well-written, the characters are great, there's still some aspects of comedy, and it overall keeps you on your toes! Again, I won't spoil anything, but I ask readers to give the manga a chance and check it out. By the way, Hayasaka is best girl, and Ishigami is best character.
@@firewall5189 I don’t hate her or anything. It just felt like she became the main character, and I fell out of it because I read mostly for the other characters.
My grandpa passed away recently. Its been really rough and I have been so sad these last two months. I started watching this show last week because I watched this video and, I really needed this. I needed to laugh, to be invested and to cry with this show. Thank you for sharing this video, it introduced me to something I never would've stumbled upon on my own
Everyone who watches a bunch of video essays and reviews has a moment where they see a notification, and it’s a channel they really love covering a topic they really love, and you never expected them to cover that topic, so it’s a good day Yeah this was that for me
If you found Kaguya-Sama good, you might find HoriMiya, Tonikaku Kawaii: Fly me to the Moon, and My Dressup Darling good too. All of which are wholesome and feel good anime and will wipe your exhaustion away after a days work. That being said, I dont think any of them matches the artistic contrast of melancholy and laughter of Kaguya Sama.
@@C0ndensedMilk27 It’s fine. When the same kind of stuff happens in some TV shows with actual people, I don’t think it’s worth getting worked up about it when it happens with fictional people.
A1 studios made Your Lie in April and Anohana, which are both masterpieces in my opinion, though part of Your Lie in April's greatness might come from it also being based on a manga. Fluidity-wise, the animation is meh, but they have amazing and colorful still shots.
Question: Does the Narrator not say the same lines in a similar manner in Japanese? I'm confused as to if the dub actors tried to recapture the spirit of the original japanese dub or just made it their own thing like Ghost Stories. Because Schaffrillas didn't really made that clear, I think.... I sometimes watch dubs, but almost never with Rom Coms at this point. So if I'm not gonna miss any entertainment, I would probably prefer to watch it sub.
@@ArnLPs the sub narrator is a serious japanese man. The humor comes from the guy narrating all the asininely hilarious things so seriously. On the other hand, the dub narrator is... well as you see.in the video.
I absolutely love love love love LOVE this show. Everyone is great in this show and I love a purposely over dramatic it is at time. As someone who doesn’t really like dubs, this one is SO FUNNY and heightens the quality and enjoyment of the show. But If you love this show and manga I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Spy x Family. It has a very Kaguya sama feel to it but is so good in its own original way. It’s getting an Anime very soon too. Also, Chainsaw man will make you laugh your ass off then make you cry harder than ever before, definitely recommend that one too.
Something you have to remember with A1 is that you have to look directly at the crew working on the show rather than just the studio themselves. They don't actually have a core team like say Ufotable or Mappa which is why the quality of their shows vary so greatly
I don’t personally like anime as much, but the disastrous life of saiki k is actually one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen and also has a great dub
I can't wait for you to get talked into watching FMAB. It rivals A:TLA, it's seriously that good. But since you're getting into anime, I wanted to recommend my three other favorite anime series that sadly don't get talked about much: Kino's Journey, Death Parade, and Dororo. But whatever series you talk about next, I'll be watching. From one ace to another, I love your videos and it's always the highlight of my day when you upload :D
Fmab is overrated as hell. Every bit of comic relief "gag humor" was absolutely terrible to watch. Plot wasn't great. Even so, its not a bad series. Just heavily overrated by nostalgia-craved fans.
@@norwa3518 Personally, I think FMAB is just a solid show with likeable characters and a concise plot. It isn't the best out there IMO, but it's just solid all the way through. It's good but not THAT good.
I binged watched it in two days, and I have to say this was lovely. The artistic direction is honestly amazing, the jokes are awesome (I liked the fact that they don't shy away on doing dirty jokes which is uncommon for a romcom like this) but how they constructed the love story... Well, it felt weak at a certain point, I'll be honest. Going over and over and over and over was honestly a bit overwhelming sometimes, but it helps building up the ending, kind of reminding how exhausting and consuming it is to love someone and not being able to confess to them; also side love stories make it more organic, and it's overall, still, one of the most enjoyable shows I've seen in a long time.
Oh man seeing you enjoy zany humor AND emotional scenes in one makes me really, REALLY wanna rec Gintama (look up some clips!), But a lot of people agree that the first 50 or so eps are something to get through to get to the good stuff - bc it's there for setting up the whole story in really, stupidly subtle ways. Honestly it's my absolute fav anime bc of how it breaks the 4th wall CONSTANTLY and how it makes me both laugh to tears and just outright cry (esp towards later arcs). I feel like anyone that enjoys Kaguya, myself included, would enjoy Gintama, but it does have a steep entry "fee" i guess, sighs..... And also it almost has 300 eps. So it is an investment ;;;;; Still my absolute favorite series though
I'd love to see him review Gintama too, I think the humor would be right up his alley. But yeah, sadly it has too large of a barrier or entry to check out
I've honestly never really gotten the "first 50 episodes are a barrier" thing bc I was personally hooked by gintama from the very first chapter lmao. I feel like a lot of people who say that go in expecting more of a shonen and get episodic comedy instead, which can be jarring, but above all else I think gintama's just something to enjoy as you go. That might be my perspective as someone who wishes I could experience the whole thing blind again though lmao, I want to experience Sorachi's rollercoaster of emotions once more 😭😭
If you're into this show, then you'd also love Assassination Classroom which is about a normal class where the teacher is an octopus monster the students have to kill. Great dub, great characters, equal parts comedy, heart, and tragedy. And it has Ian Sinclair as a villain!
Seeing a brief mention of Cowboy Bebop in the video made me realize how much I'd love to see what you'd think of it in a review or just general thoughts video. It's easily one of my favorite series of all time for reasons you've probably already heard a thousand times from 200 people, but its status is well deserved as a classic of animation. And on the actual topic of the video, I definitely am more interested in watching Kaguya-Sama now after seeing this video. I've had it recommended before, but always thought it didn't go beyond "haha funny anime girl" and never looked into it. Now that I know it's more than that I'll bump it up on my to-be-watched list
7:42 I see you have found our Lord and savior of all dubbedanime Ian Sinclair. I only watch dub anime if I know he's in it because he just makes everything amazing.
Now I hope he reviews One Piece.

@@jonnjones8263 I've looked at the episode count. How do you even start something so long?
My first exposure to him was Zapp Renfro from Blood Blockade Battlefront, and honestly, he's become my favorite. Everything he's in, if he's goofy, he's hilarious. When he's serious, he's badass. When he's villainous, he's intimidating or terrifying. Legend.
My first exposure to him was as Berkut, one of the single best villains in the Fire Emblem series, where his voice acting is miles above the already good voice acting from everybody else in the game. Absolutely unreal.

Why so serious
Best part about the characters, Chika who is supposed to be the "3rd Wheel CHaracter" and she is shown to be dumb and airheaded, however in S1 she said to know (I think) 6ish languages, and also in one episode she is shown quite literally gaslight, and emotionally manipulate her friends Kaguya just to win a board game
She isn't dumb, she just doesn't understand what those two are doing because if she had to confess something she would say it out right

My shortest way to describe this show is "If Death Note was a rom-com."
Not perfectly accurate, but it turns heads and perfectly defines the charm of the show's premise imo
Considering what happens later in the manga with Shirogane study habits... Yeah Death Note rom-com is really damn accurate.
It doesn't turn to shit halfway through so it's no Death Note

I love how when Kaguya is sick she casually mentions wanting fireworks and then in the season 1 finally we see how much seeing fireworks mean to her. It’s such a great little detail that I appreciate
Same, i was like "hey, that was hinted before, i remember" such great times
She also lost her blank state of mind because of the fireworks mention in ep10, but there's more to that. The best part is when she is now finally able to watch the fireworks, she didn't even give them a glance and only looked at the most important thing to her life.
I love how most rom-coms they don’t confess because they’re not sure whether the other person likes them and are afraid of rejection. Meanwhile!
Not the biggest fan of YLIA, but I'd rather defend Shinsekai Yori, Silver Spoon and the Doukyuusei movie
@@danielleiva3628 regardless on how you feel about the story (I, too, have my gripes with it), the production in YLIA is *absolutely insane* and one of the best of A-1 by a lot.
Your lie in April got me hooked on slice of life/romance stuff tbh lol. Definitely a big favorite for me!
I think many regard a-1 as the McDonald’s of anime. A-1 also has many cases of overworked staff and several attempted suicides
So does that make SAO the Trolls of A-1 Pictures?
The A1 thing actually shows that the staff is more important than the studio. Some studios have cultivated in house directors and staff that are fantastic and are a big reason why those studios are so consistently high quality, and then you have A1 which varies wildly in quality depending on what staff they grabbed for a given show
They just grab out of the bucket for every show, and it's a total wildcard!
A great aspect about this series is the platonic relationships between men and women. Kaguya and Ishigami are really close but there is never a moment where it's used as drama. Same with Shirogane and Iino, jokes are absolutely done about it but that's it. Not a single second of love triangle bs.
Well, there were two triangles (and it's seams the final will bring one more)
@@redkraken6516 god damnit I hate those
@@nightshade2826 well at least, there's never much dramatic interactions, but there was one chapter where some some characters decided who to ship person A of the love triangle with who. (Not spoiling)
Did you forget Mama Chika?!
Exactly! Studios are basically just the place where the staff meet to work.

Generally comparing A1 to Dreamworks is on point. Sometimes they release the best shows ever, and sometimes the worst shows you will see all season (or year even).
Here are three sample shows, in rising order of importance (not quality)
Darling in the Franxx - a mecha show from 2018, collaboration woth studio Trigger, that was supposed to save the dying mecha genre.
While we're on A-1... Another thing I love that was animated by them was Shelter

Yeah that's A1's legacy alright.
I like how a lot of fans were introduced to the series by the fujiwara's dance sequence in the 3rd episode
Fujiwara as a whole made the show famous

That tragic backstory you talked about, holy crap that got to me. I won’t spoil it, but as someone who has very similar issues I can relate. I’m glad that their friends are what helped them in the end… I’m still trying to find those friends irl but that’s not the point. I shall expect more anime/manga analyses in the future.

I really didn’t see the ending to that, the way it gives you a different kind of ‘happy ending’ is incredible.
Fight me.
We all know Ishigami is best girl, boy and everything else

The humour in this series is top-notch! The mind games between characters is really fun to watch as well.
Now this is definitely the perfect way to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Sonic movie being released.
Love how everything gets called back on in the latest chapters in the most satisfying ways possible.

I have to thank you wholeheartedly for this. I had seen bits and pieces about this from the memes it's spawned, but I never really thought it was up my alley. Well, I've finished the subbed version and am currently halfway through the dubbed version of episode one, where the narrator just completely broke me and I needed to come write this to calm down for a moment. one thing i adore about the show as it goes on is that despite both being geniuses at the end of the day, both Kaguya and Shirogane are awkward teens that just want to admit to each other they care about one another. Its really heartwarming.
Also Ishigami best boy
Ishigami started out as a "one of us" and grown into "what all of us should strive to be"
Since you love Majora's Mask so much, you would love the anime "The Tatami Galaxy".

Same, same and the same. I couldn't have agreed more and i also binged it for two days straight, it was amazing
Oh man seeing you enjoy zany humor AND emotional scenes in one makes me really, REALLY wanna rec Gintama (look up some clips!), But a lot of people agree that the first 50 or so eps are something to get through to get to the good stuff - bc it's there for setting up the whole story in really, stupidly subtle ways. Honestly it's my absolute fav anime bc of how it breaks the 4th wall CONSTANTLY and how it makes me both laugh to tears and just outright cry (esp towards later arcs). I feel like anyone that enjoys Kaguya, myself included, would enjoy Gintama, but it does have a steep entry "fee" i guess, sighs..... And also it almost has 300 eps. So it is an investment ;;;;;
Still my absolute favorite series though
I'd love to see him review Gintama too, I think the humor would be right up his alley. But yeah, sadly it has too large of a barrier or entry to check out
I've honestly never really gotten the "first 50 episodes are a barrier" thing bc I was personally hooked by gintama from the very first chapter lmao. I feel like a lot of people who say that go in expecting more of a shonen and get episodic comedy instead, which can be jarring, but above all else I think gintama's just something to enjoy as you go. I see you have found our Lord and savior of all dubbedanime Ian Sinclair. I only watch dub anime if I know he's in it because he just makes everything amazing. This man is so dedicated to his craft and he loves it so much I have so much respect for him. I had no clue he was the narrator for kaguya but now that I know I will promptly binge watch both seasons.
Yes this show is so good, the humor holds up and it’s the right amount of trope and good genuine humor
If you are searching other great shows to watch, please check this ones!
Land of the Lustrous: talking stones fight ghost form the moon, the characters and animation are amazing.
Made in Abyss: the anime equivalent of dropping two kid is the most dangerous desert in Australia, it has great world building and mysteries.
Mob Psycho 100: This is difficult to explain, but it is really fun and has really good writing
Re:Zero: Dark Souls the anime... great characters, great world building and great mysteries
Promised Neverland (ONLY SEASON 1): you need to watch first ep to see
Nichijou: slice of life but it is fucking bonkers and over the top
How about Madoka Magica and Revolutionary Girl Utena
Gurren Lagann man, come on.
Ian Sinclair is one of the best voice actors working today- I have never seen (or guess HEARD) him in a bad role. He is amazing
Im so excited for the third season that comes out soon
