We've got Andrew wiltse coming for a seminar soon and I'm stoked about that, we had Mason Fowler before that. My gym is mma focused so we generally lean towards no gi in our seminars.
I'm a 130Kg Judo 1st Kyu. I tend to go easy on smaller guys and try to use technique. Going easy is a difficult thing to gauge but people like to train with me so I must be doing it right. We recently had a (much smaller) black belt leave the club and on our last randori session I didn't hold back (for the first time). His face the first time i ragdolled him was priceless 😅. Size matters.
I think that's a good thing you're doing as long as people don't get false confidence when going against a bigger opponent. As I've gotten older I have come to appreciate wrestling in high school. It was always max intensity all the time, and for me at least it is far better to know your limitations vs. larger opponents so you can learn to play around it as much as you can.
I’m around 6’1 175 so I always get paired With the big boys since I’m taller. It’s so exhausting when they get me in side control and just put their weight on me most of the round
As a guy Mike's size I think Marcelo has been a big influence on me when it come to rolling with people that outweigh me by 80lbs. Once I stopped going to my back when I'm almost passed and never accepting a cross face I've done much better. Hand posting and an elbow between me and their neck is like magic. As for big guys trying to do stuff like submit you from inside closed guard, there is an interview with Travis Steven's that has really stuck with me. He said always do what is right, not what works. You were pretty much echoing that point. Could a guy his size submit me from inside my guard? Probably. Is it a correct thing to be doing? No. There are a bunch of big guys at my gym that will do the dumbest things to get a tap when they are double the size as someone, but then they complain that they can't do anything against someone their own size. Love the videos! I always laugh at something you say in the commentary.
I always thank big guys that don't use their weight on me I'm like 190 and much stronger and have a pretty extensive wrestling background. Nobody my weight or under will roll with me? Constantly having to roll with 215 plus, most try to use weight instead of technique. I still more than hold my own but man it gets old when their tactic is being bigger than you.
@@timlamb1156 from us that roll at 145 welcome to the club, but most of us dont have the luxury of wrestling people our weight or less. Everyone is bigger and our muscles hurt and joints ache.
Love how Travis went full strength and aplying maximum pressure. Best going for a choke inside the guard. This would be the equivalent of Mike going into the kids classes going full strength, out to dominate. What's the point?
I'm a 180# blue belt and we have a 300# blue that is younger by 15+ years and mostly muscle. Luckily, he knows how to roll easy and with technique, otherwise I'd be crushed almost instantly. On ther other hand, a much older and smaller brown belt can get frustrated if I'm having a good day. It's all relative.
Right somehow sweep. Even then passing the big boys is retarded sometimes. I have an over under I've used for years, try to pass this guy at 6'5 probably taller and 240 anytime I try to pass he just pushes my head into his knee and I can't move. He tries to submit but really it doesn't work but man does it hurt my face and I can't shift anything. Try to do other passes and he just man handles you into triangle, and instead of completing triangle... He does a "bolt cutter" in other words something people came up with because they can't complete the triangle. All it does is pop your back and mess your neck up for a week
I don't think I ever want to be heavier than 210 or 215. Sure it would be cool to be able to squish more people. But seems rough on the knees and I like having abs
@@Kay0Bot if they are grapplers its probably from posting/bridging/ or getting spiked on their head. No idea why a civilian big guy would have Neck problems other than mobility maybe
The Gracie brothers, Heron and Henner (spelling?), said this too. It's why my 40 something 175lb butt has hella rolls with 18 to 20 yr old 200 plus pound kids... Techniques work great, but as these kids learn it gets hard quickly...
@@3nt3rtain Agree! I feel like my technique only goes so far, especially after a few rolls with young, strong, heavy dudes. Then it just becomes me trying to stay "not crushed" by bad positions.
I don't understand the point of smashing somebody and working the top position against a guy who is 100lbs smaller than you. To me the kimura and americana are bully moves against someone that much smaller... If I'm rolling with someone significantly smaller I try to work my bottom game, maybe get 1 quick tap from the top at the beginning of the round then work from the bottom. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you learn very much working the top position against a much smaller player.
I suppose it depends on what level you're at. I am just a white belt but I always work top because I hate being on bottom and have nothing there. If they are bigger, stronger or higher belt, I work on maintaining the position. I they are smaller I go for the submission. Either way, I feel I am learning. If I were a purple belt or higher, I imagine I would feel differently.
I'm 6ft 1 in, 275pound 40 year old white belt with about 15 months of training. Against guys my size I will use my weight but most of the people in my gym are 40 pounds or more lighter than me. Toale sure I can always find training partners I tend to carry more weight on the floor like in mount with hooks I always have my feet on the ground, not floating. O focus on using only the technique and my size is the bonus for comp or a self defence situation. I find the smaller guys and gals are way too fast and agile for me and one minute they are here, next they are inverted the complete opposite way, submitting me. Now I could just sink my weight into them and not get submitted but since I'm 40 I don't have the ego of not being able to let myself be submitted by someone less than half my size. However sometimes for a second or two I will put all my weight on, just to remind them that i could smash but I choose not to. It works great and always seem to have people wanting to roll with me, as bjj is all about the smaller guy overcoming the bigger opponent.
25 pounds is 1 belt….how about age ? I am a 60 year old white belt at a Gracie school….10 months in. I go 3 times a week and days off I feel like a bus hit me.
TBH I am a normal build female and I absolutely don't like the guys that just crank sh*t at all.. I now treat all new woman in my gym with extra care, encouragement and support. And I also discuss with them who they don't want to roll with and why
I have mixed feelings on it. I'm a bigger woman, and I still hate rolling with bigger guys (or sometimes smaller) guys who can just muscle me. It sucks, but I do BJJ in large part for self defense, and realistically I gotta know how to fight back against someone who can overpower me. So I often will choose the strong guy over the more gentle, technical guy. It absolutely sucks, but if I can make it the full round without tapping, or even get into a dominant position for a few seconds I'm pretty pleased with myself. Embrace the suck as they say.
I can see what you mean with being over powered and brute strength into everything but I would be careful talking about who to roll with and not. I rolled at 145 and had the cleanest technique and flow very well in 7 years haven't injured any partners with the exception of us accidentally colliding on weird movements. Short story longI grappled with a female who was a purple and was a blue, she out weighed me by 20 lbs she was decent shape and did MMA, because of her ego she complained she couldn't beat me because of strength and complained to other people, and that could have ruined a lot of rolls. Luckily people knew me better but new students would be warded off until we actually rolled.
