Mylar drum head was used as a diaphragm in one of my old truck air horn rebuilds. Good work guys.

I built a 3 chime NathanP3 tune (C#, E, & A notes) set from DozerBoyMillers plans. The first set of plans seemed to be missing something after studying them & exploded views of real train horns. I bought a 2nd set of updated plans that also included links to 3 proprietary videos & used his favorite diaphragm material, polycarbonate in 0.093 inch thickness. I noticed in real train horns smooth radiused aerodynamic transitions just inside the nozzle inlet & the same into the bell (trumpet shaped part). I bought a large tapered reamer over 1 inch at largest dia. & tapered the pvc where it exited into the bell to reduce turbulence. On the nozzle end, I had access to an old junky lathe at work & machines the nozzles (preglued to the 3/4" exit pipe), 1st with the lathe to knock the sharp corners off inside the nozzle, then switched to a mini-portable belt sander to perfect the perfect, radiused bell curve from nozzle inlet to exit pipe, just like real train horn nozzles! The diaphragm preload is done differemt with his system (no threads). I preloaded to begin blowing at 20 psi using an adjustable air regulator for tuning. My reasoning was I did Not want a low pressure "mouth-blown" version, but a real freakin" LOUD train horn!! I assembled it into a portable Show-N-Blow version with a 11 gallon 140 psi Max spare-air Craftsman tank. 1/2" id hose & ball valve to a steel pipe manifold. 1/4" id clear hose to each chamber & BAM!! Much better than I expected or imagined! I went from building to building at work & got tons of grins, laughs, shocked faces & even people leaping or jumping, though warned repeatedly! And..I even got in trouble for disrupting a big honchos international business call! OOPS!. I originally intended to install the train horn on my little economy car because I kept getting run off the road, unseen & unheard (dinky factory horn) but I had so much fun in ShowN Blow mode, I never got around to it. Paul Nice quality looking mounts & design BTW.

I want to THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge! I get SO sick of people who learn something, and then want to charge an arm and leg on Fleabay for plans! I NEVER charged people to show them what I learned as a Machinist/Toolmaker for 25+yrs,and most people who come by my place get some piddly work done for free, even if I expend a few cents/dollars on Elec.,and supplies! THAT'S what friends are for!!!

Well done! Thank you for sharing this.I should make a lower frequency horn for my emergencyehicle for just short blasts. Even though 200W electronic siren, truckers often can't hear it.

awesome videos guys, can't wait for the full psi test, you by far have the best design, just wondering how you know when you're at the right note? special tuner? and how ate you planning on putting a switch inside the truck when it comes time to install? maybe a sprinkler valve with a momentary switch on the dash?

Can you explain the arrangement of the diaphrams in detail..is there and particular spacing and how exactly does air pressure effect them..not really understanding how this all works. and clarity would be helpfull.

I like your tuning methods, I'll have to give that a try.
That upper C note is definitely hard to reach. That was one of the hardest notes to get on my horns. But it is possible to reach it.
And I recommend keeping all the air inlet holes the same size on all the horns, it makes assembly easier. Then just drop small wire crimp connectors into the air line to reduce the supplied air. These are the style of wire connectors I use. www.amazonsupply.com/wire-crimp-connectors-blue-yellow/dp/B002T1FLPM

    • @xasygrikas2490

      Ronald Baker
OK, lets say it's 1" INside diameter pipe with 1" coupling half on one of its ends - how the end with the coupling could fit through 1-1/2" threaded bushing? Outside diameter of 1" pipe is already ~1.3" - almost, almost near 1.5" diameter of bushing hole - I see no way the pipe to be 1" INside diameter.
Of course, maybe I'm wrong - explain me, please :)
