    Well done on going long on the Mad Science. You've saved me a year of doing it wrong.

    and i want to see both. let it clear with time for a bit to see how that works, then run it through a filter and do a taste test to see if what you tasted was the yeast or what the yeast imparted to the mead

    Yeah, I have sort of taken to using a whole packet a lot of times. I always told people it's really hard to overpitch. Nice test, I never did a side by side and I definitely never did 500g in a gallon! Brave man!

    Stumbled across this series today because... Wait for it... I put the entire 5g packet of Lavin D47 in my gallon must.
    I also put the nutrients packet in yesterday thinking it was the yeast packet😂. After realizing my mistake I added too much yeast.
    We shall see how she goes 😅 glad there is hope

    I like the age option. Maybe cold rack will help a bit?

    The DANGER! bucket lees looks like pancake batter. Good thing we don't have smell-evision. Considering your experiment was meant for new home brewers a filter would be beyond their equipment assets. You could try an easily accessible fining agent. Thanks for this video.

    Give them a few months to clear and age, then show us the comparison. I expect the danger mead to be quite palatable after all the yeast is gone.
    As for what I want to see next... Maybe a similar experiment with nutrient levels? But please don't turn your mead salty with 500 g of nutrients =P

    I do wonder if the "stalling out" of the specific gravity reading was due to the sheer amount of yeast in solution affecting the viscosity of the fluid? perhaps after the first drop the alcohol content had already been reached and it stalled out because the hydrometer was buoyed by the yeast in the solution?? actual alcohol content could be similar even though the hydrometer reading were so different since at that point it wasnt actually reading sugar/alcohol presence so much as yeast presence.

    • @ArrowtotheMead

      That's a great suggestion! I actually tested the gravity of a new water + yeast mixture in the part 2.5 video also on my channel. You may want to check out the results... ;)

      Not viscosity. Density, that is exactly what the hydrometer measures. But yes, i was thinking the same thing

    Hey bro,
    Do you think use the overload for a pitch

    • @ArrowtotheMead
      @ArrowtotheMead 3 роки тому

      Based on what I've seen so far, I'd say the 25g bucket is completely fine, but I definitely would not advise pitching a whole pound per gallon.
      As of writing, that overloaded bucket *still* has not cleared up. At the rate it's going right now, I don't think it'll be clear and drinkable for at least a few more months, if not longer.

    I have some floaters on my mead. Is that a bad thing?

    • @ArrowtotheMead
      @ArrowtotheMead 2 роки тому

      Depends on what's floating! Many things like yeast rafts, fruit, and spices are harmless - outside of the possibility that they could dry out enough for mold to form on them.
      Mold can be dangerous, if it's mold I'd dump it. Doin the Most has a good video explaining that. If you're not sure what you have floating, I'd post a pic on one of the YT channels' Discord server or the subreddit r/mead for help with identification. I won't be able to say with sufficient certainty from a text description. There's also a section on infections with pictures in the r/mead wiki you can check as a reference

      @@ArrowtotheMead it just looked like yeast and I ain't used any fruit. I racked it into secondary at 1.009. Added oak. I did use a pack of d47 and a 1/4 teaspoon of ec1118 just for back up on 4 gallons

    • @jeffjohnson1464
      @jeffjohnson1464 2 роки тому +1

      @@ArrowtotheMead it's just yeast rafts I think. It's a traditional mead and when I put it in secondary it was already 11.4% so hopefully infections are unlikely. I appreciate your input. Thank you for your help.
