  • Seiko SKX013 Review 2019 - Is the famous 38mm Seiko dive watch still worth it with all the other diver watch options out there? Is the SKX013 still one of the best $200 automatic watches in 2019?
    In this review, I'll share my own personal experience of owning the SKX013. We'll discuss its accuracy, style, and utility. Do you have a modded SKX? What mods have you done? (Comment below!)

      Rus.Sel Smedley I’m glad we share the exact same feeling about this watch. It has so much importance to me because it is the only watch I wear during this crisis we’re in. And because of that, it will be a part of my personal history. Thanks for sharing the idea of wearing it on a mid brown leather strap! I think I’ll find one for it now. 👍 All in all, it is a best friend on my wrist 😁. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts about it, Russel. And thanks for coming through. Hope to hear from you again in the future! 🙏

    Best of thee SKX013 videos I have seen. Informative, non a bit pretentious, and more than simply reading the catalog stats which we can read better than listed to you parrot them. First rate, looking forward to the 1 year report.

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  5 років тому

      Bart, my friend, I cannot thank you enough for that feedback. I'm really glad you found value in my attempt to review this icon of a watch. I'm actually looking forward to the 1 year report myself. In fact, to give you my 9-month update, the accuracy has "matured" to a consistent -6 seconds per day, no damage whatsoever on the Hardlex crystal, hairline (unnoticeable) scuffs on the casing; naturally, and still haven't drained the power reserve to flatline. Do you own one, as well?
      Again, I appreciate the time taken to watch the video. Means a whole lot! -Chris

    I've had my SKX013 for five months. I like its rugged look and is one of my top 5 watches in my 22 watch collection. I wear it once or twice per week. This leads to frequent time/date adjustments and my only complaint. I find the small crown difficult to screw back down due to the large crown guards.

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  5 років тому +1

      We're right around the same timeline of ownership! Pretty cool. That's quite a hefty collection, man! I'm sure it's fun as hell tinkering around with a ton of watches on a whim hah. What's your favorite of the bunch? Have you gotten any of your grails yet?
      And as for the crown, I do think the grooves could be sunk in deeper for a more tactile grip. Thanks for tuning in and chiming in, John!

      I have the same issue with my SKX013. I find the crown screws down more easily if you turn the watch upside down. Your thumb gets a better grip on the crown.

    Excellent video! Thank you! You hit all the relevant points on the SKX013. I bought mine about two months ago and I love it so much that I spend my time watching videos about it and yours is the best! I had 21 watches, mostly Casios, and I liked them all, but now I ONLY wear my SKX013 and I'm actually surprised by how much I love it. I'm like a man who loves women and when I found the perfect girl I married her and now I don't even look at all of the others. It looks great and it feels right. It's rugged and manly and is clearly high-quality. Another great thing is that when I come home and wash my hands I can take it off and hold it under the faucet and blast water all over it. It's always clean and shiny. Thanks again for your video. I really enjoyed it!

    • @ModernRegimen

      Steve, my friend. I TRULY appreciate the kind words and vital feedback. I, like yourself, have been so drawn by the value propositions that Casio watches have to offer. In a span of a month, I bought 3 Casios; of which I still all own and actually sold and gave off a majority of my non-Casio watches. And my SKX013 is the kingpin within my entire collection. And yeah the beauty about this diver is that it welcomes a good blast of water anytime, anywhere! What strap are you wearing on the 013 at the moment? Did you get it with the jubilee bracelet or rubber strap? I think this will be my watch till I acquire an Omega Speedy! Again, thanks for taking the time to tune in, brother. Cheers!

      @@ModernRegimen I got the rubber strap, and I like it a lot. However, like you, I'm planning to indulge the love of my (watch) life and replace it with a shark mesh bracelet. I'm also intrigued by that Rally Racing strap you showed us. Since I'm done buying watches (for the foreseeable future anyway, who am I kidding?) I plan to have fun accessorizing my SKX013. I just subscribed to your channel and am about to watch all of your videos and I look forward to all to come in the future. Thanks again, my dear fellow!

    Had my 007 for 4 years now, it's been worn daily and beaten like a rented mule. Still wearing it now and it's as accurate as the day I got it (loses approx 5 secs per day). Best watch ever!

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  4 роки тому

      That rented mule analogy is serious, man! Ha! And it defines the brute robustness of the watch very well. I have no sympathy for the way I treat mine either and it still floats from -4 to -7 seconds a day, as well. I can never take it off - it always finds its way back to the wrist. Cheers to you for sharing a similar experience man. It’s a future classic, for sure.. 🤜🤛

      Man, that is quite a history. I don't intend on letting my SKX go so hopefully it can last that remaining 19.5 years hah! I really admire the casing on the Sumo. • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  5 років тому +1

      Oh, interesting... I do like the style of the endmill bracelet design but what's funny is I currently have a similar occurrence with my SKX where the 7-column bracelet (shown in the video). The bracelet gives it an interesting look that I like. However, since there are no microadjustments, it's in that slightly too big or too small zone depending on the link removal. And so back to the standard jubilee, as well, for me. Hah! Enjoy that Sumo, Joseph!

    • @1968jpy
      @1968jpy 5 років тому +1

      Modern Regimen hey that’s exactly what was the issue with the endmill. It only had 3 micro adjustments so was either too tight or too loose . Was driving me crazy lol 😂. Then I adjusted the stock bracelet and put it back on the Sumo and fits like a glove 🧤. Seiko bracelets get a bad rap but honestly I love the stock bracelet for the Sumo 😀👍🏻

    Your SKX013 is perfectly aligned. I wish mine is.

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  5 років тому +1

      The slight misalignment at the 30-minute index can be forgiven for most people, I guess. But as a graphic designer by trade, it's a little bothersome. The chapter ring isn't supposed to be there just for decoration or style but it serves as a measuring point. It's like buying a ruler with the markings being off. At that point, it's not a ruler anymore. So I feel your pain just the same. Haha! Nonetheless, it's been the only watch I've worn for the past 2 months. Thanks for tuning in, man! Seriously appreciate it. 🙏

Strap on with a grey or black and white nato, becomes a nice weekend watch for casual wear, go to the supermarket, to the beach or even to the movies. Good video, well done. I couldn't agree more. It's certainly a watch that doesn't get old. Always makes its way on the wrist. I took it to Yosemite this past weekend and it had the ability to spark conversation with neighboring campers. Just too cool. I also agree that applied markers would have given the watch a boost in looks. I have a theory that they'll update the SKX in 2021 which marks its 25th anniversary. Crossing me fingers they spruce up the dial, sign the crown, and upgrade the movement. They would sell like hotcakes! Thanks so much for taking the time to tune in, Terence! Truly.

      Thanks, Randy! Mad thanks for watching the vid! Personally, I'm not too heavily interested in modding my SKX013 when it comes to anything in the casing. I'm afraid of messing with the flow of the accuracy since it's just -2 seconds off per day which is really good. However, I'm considering getting a fully lumed bezel insert from Lumed Ceramic Bezel Inserts (@lumedceramicbezelinserts on Instagram) for mine but that's the extent I'd go. Plus, I feel the cost for parts and labor when modding could just go to a future grail watch lol! That's how my mind works... I highly recommend getting the SKX013, man. The price seems to be going up as the months go by so try and get one this year if you can. If it ever reaches $300, I would then consider a different more updated diver for that price point. @@ModernRegimen do you think I'd be surprised at the size even though nearly every UA-camr I've seen has said it

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  5 років тому +1

      My first question for you is approximately what size is our wrist? I have a 6.25-inch wrist and no matter how many videos I watched about the watch, my real in-person view of the watch still made me go "Whoa, it's still slightly smaller than I imagined". And my guess for why this is is because the bezel takes up 10mm (5mm on both sides) of the entire diameter of the face making the actual face size only 28mm. My previous dive watch before the SKX013 was a Casio Duro (MDV-106) which was 44mm. So that jump in size was drastic in a visual sense. It was never a bad thing for it being smaller. It was just a new experience, so to speak. So to answer your question (lol), I think you'd be surprised upon seeing it for the first time. But that goes away as the watch starts to adapt to your lifestyle. I wear mine everyday and haven't looked back since. I hope that helps!

  • @vagotil
    @vagotil 5 років тому +2

    How do you keep them running if you wear them just couple of hours? Skx has the same movement as your snk and its power reserve is pretty short)))

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  5 років тому

      I wear my SKX mainly. And in the video I mentioned that I USED TO own an SNK. I gave it away. And I never go past 15 hours without wearing my SKX. So at the moment, it’s been about 6 months of continuous ticking. And to make things even more interesting (or odd to some), I wear this my SKX while I sleep every night. I appreciate the question and thanks for tuning in, Andrew. I appreciate it!

    • @vagotil
      @vagotil 5 років тому +1

      Modern Regimen so I hope you don’t mind then some questions)) what is your wrist size and how do you find skx vs snk (since they are in the same diameter) on the hand? How do you find their weight? I’m actually about to own skx013 over my snk. Actually it can be a good idea for some comparative video about this two models since they have both same movement, size and both are some kind of entry level watches in their segments)))
      Thanks

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  5 років тому

      No problem, man! I'd be glad to help as best as I can. My wrist size is about 6.25 inches. The reason why I gifted my SNK to a friend was because after I got the SKX, I found no point it having 2 watches with the same movement (although there's absolutely nothing wrong with that). I preferred having a rotating bezel which the SNK didn't have as it was more of a standard field watch. The casing of the SKX adds more weight to it with a noticeable difference but not heavy enough to be bothersome. As I mentioned, I can sleep like a baby wearing my SKX on the jubilee bracelet. The SNK had only one minor flaw in my opinion which was simply the crown being a tad too small. The accuracy from my experience with both watches was that they both were well within the window of what the manufacturer states. The obvious difference between both watches is the price. The lume on the SKX makes owning the watch more enjoyable than the SNK. It's just really easy to see at night and looks better on any NATO than the SNK in my humble opinion. In the end, I don't regret gifting my SNK and buying an SKX. It wouldn't be the same the other way around, meaning SKX > SNK. I hope that helps, Andrew! If you need clarification on anything specific, let me know.

    • @vagotil
      @vagotil 5 років тому

      Thanks for the answer)) I’m ok with snk but they have some things that I’ve found maybe not for me, I have 6,7” wrist and actually I’m ok with their size but the strap looks too narrow and also I’ve found myself not very comfortable with leather or nato straps. No problems with its small crown I think that’s great (if you don’t have to set them every morning because yesterday you wore them not long enough)) and the last thing as this movement needs more time on the hand I prefer something more robust. So I find 013 some kind of optimal solution since they have so many positive responses

    The lugs are too long and it’s way too thick for its 38mm diameter. The other dimensions weren’t scaled properly with the reduction in case size. That gives the 013 awkward, uneven proportions making the watch aesthetically unattractive imo.

    • @ModernRegimen
      @ModernRegimen  4 роки тому +1

      I can totally respect that opinion, man. We can definitely agree to disagree which makes this whole hobby fun. I personally don’t have qualms with the lug to lug because I now just wear it on the jubilee solely which makes the lug length inconspicuous at a glance. Also, I’m the type that doesn’t like hiding my watches under the sleeve like most so the height doesn’t bother me. Many people love the Seiko Samurai and I personally think it’s an uninspiring design. Subjectivity is a funny thing. That said, big thanks for your insights! It’s a refreshing perspective. Also, if you feel that the clasp was too hard to open on the original, all you have to do is take some pliers and spread/bend the metal part outward where it bites into the clasp just a tiny bit so that it loosens up the tightness. Hope that helps! And thanks for watching, brother. 🙏
