My parents were in Koscot when I was a small child in the late 60's. They lost their shirts and the house. I remember going to the endlessly boring wig parties. Mom did the grunt work and dad did the fast talking trying to woo new clients. It was a train wreck.
Excellent work Sean! I work the night shift and your videos keep me alive!!! So much more nuanced than the average pop history videos you see here, you take your time to provide balanced and detailed coverage and I cannot thank you enough!!! Love from Dallas!
Watched this and the Amway tools scam video multiple times-spine tingling to think how much power they had over government and impact on where USA is right now. Great work Sean
Heck yes thank you Sean I’ve been desperate for another legitimate Anti-MLM video, and no one else has came close to touching the subject like you do nor has there been any worthwhile documentaries at least not any easily found
My parents were drawn into Holiday Magic. They rented space from the local beauty shop in the new Mall. When it all collapsed my parents were devastated! It was a hard time in my family!
I’ve been consuming antiMLM content for quite a few years now, and your videos have been some of the absolute best. Your ability to place the events within the wider historical context really sets you apart (in addition to your rigorous research). I know MLM isn’t the focus of your channel, but I hope you continue to make these videos.
It’s incredibly impressive that you are able to put together these multiple hour videos and release them every month. Most other UA-camrs I see who do long form content will release like 4-5 times a year! Amazing work!
Thank you for documenting this journey of yours. They've passed on but over the last 20 years my parents have been in and out of various multi-level marketing schemes and I tried to grapple with fact-based refutation of some of these scams and I always came up a little bit short and I couldn't convince them to step back and take a look at how bad things were. I feel better now that my instincts weren't crazy and that there's documented examples of how this all began. Thanks again for making this a video.❤
I drank the Amway Coolaid in my 20s, luckily I didn't bring in anyone else and even made a bit of money. It lasted less than a year because my upperline kept pestering me to bring in new recruits which I didn't want to do. One thing that can be said about Amway (or at least could be said at that time) is their products were quite good actually.
People in our church sold Amway soap. The products were actually good however the crap you went through to get the soap was horrible. All the pitching and the connection to God turned me off.
@VictorianMaid99 Funny, in Eastern Europe it had nothing to do with religion as far as i know. A voluntary cultist pyramide scheme among people well-versed in pyramide schemes (most had experience) distributing job offers first, catalogues second. And we were a religious bunch too..
I love the way you structure your videos, especially the little detail of always ‘setting the scene’ by explaining what else was going on culturally and politically at that time. I’m not from the US, so that’s extra helpful. I also appreciate your very clear and calm narration.
Of all the history channels I watch, yours has rapidly become my favorite. Your depth and delivery are just so damn good! Early congrats on 100K subscribers, Sean!!!
Amazing work and storytelling mate. My jaw legitimately dropped when as I started thinking about how this influenced the current mlm scams 50 years later. All I could think of when you mentioned dare to be great cassette tapes is all the mlmers who’ve hopped on master resell rights!
If you wish to continue this series on pyramid schemes, I'd reccomend looking into the Albanian pyramid scheme debacle. When it came to a head, 2/3rds of the country embroiled in a pyramid scheme and it was so evidently bad that it prevented them from joining NATO for a while. They did end up joining in 2009 along with Croatia.
I've heard of that, just not how bad it was.. North-Eastern Europe was swept by pyramide schemes too, especially the late '90s (same as Russia). Ever heard of "Bank Baltija"? They were official banks then, having savings of most pensioners. Never again..
@@will0705 My Romanian friend used to joke that only 4 people in Romania have legal jobs and everyone else sells them and each other black market goods. Of course he was older and he lived through the soviet times, the dictators overthrow and the aftermath so who knows if he was just being facetious about the economic state of the country or if criminal enterprise was that big. I mean of course he's being hyperbolic.
I've been marketed to on separate occasions. Once, a fellow student high on EST got me to attend an introductory seminar. The high pressure nature of the presentation did not appeal to me. Also while a student, I got the AMWAY 'mystery' product presentation. It sorta backfired on my would-be benefactor. He was so cagey about the product he convinced me he was selling drugs. He was a teacher.

Losing pounds of weight on a diet of brown bread and sauerkraut under detention in Germany. Good detail. Interesting tale of conmanship, interactions of connivers and victims, the involvement of lawyer Bailey and his involvement with the con. Well written and very well narrated.
Once again, Sean; you have hit it out of the park. The level of detail and deep dive makes a topic that in all reality I could care very little about is amazing to the point where you inspire me to care about it. Spending a lifetime in church, I’ve always been aware of various different MLMs in operation. Some (like Avon) seemed more legit than others. Some friends and relatives have gotten involved in a few to varying degrees of success, but I don’t really have any horror or success stories. Either way, GREAT WORK and keep them coming! I never understood the cachet of Florida. It is notoriously uninhabitable, with horror show predators, a hotbed of tropical diseases and voracious insects, hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding. Why, i ask, would anyone live there? Why in the world would we send our vulnerable elderly there to die? To die? My oldest sister spent her final years there, (though my middle sister spent her final years in Alaska!?). Call me a coward, but after living up and down the East coast, i am happy right back here in the sensible midwest where we only have tornadoes and sense enough to provide ourselves with basements.
Well, older adults have agency, we don't force them to go to Florida. And the Midwest's got more than that lol... everywhere does now with global warming
Fl my whole life its really not that bad. The media and social media make it out to be a lot worse than it is. Hurricanes are sporadic and really only affect the coasts and panhandle. Just use bug spray and don't swim in a lake with gators. The only tropical diseases you will get is spending too long breathing miami air Edit: actually no its awful dont move here and tell everyone else moving here to stop buying all the houses
I’m a Florida native. I don’t understand your comment. That is like asking why anyone at all lives in a tropical climate - like Caribbeans, pacific islanders and southeast asians. For one, the landscape is far more beautiful and vibrant than the midwest (particularly here in South Florida) and plus we never have to worry about dangerous winter weather like you do. There are pros and cons to every place. Old people (snowbirds) choose to come here, they aren’t forced. I actually miss the way this state used to be before it became heavily overpopulated.

Oh. My. Goodness. I have been fascinated by Glen Turner since I was a child! We had a summer home in FL, and everything about GWT, Koscot, and even his castle was practically hypnotic, and I got my family to even agree to visit CFL in October so I could visit the Jaycee’s haunted house in Glen Turner’s castle, and one of the girls I knew and was friends with there’s mom sold Koscot Cosmetics, and I spent hours and hours for a few years talking with her mom. I don’t know why I was so fascinated; if I had to put it all into words, it was because child me had a hard time believing GWT existed and figuring out how he fit in to the schematic structure I was building that describes how the world worked. His talks I got a hold of (cassette tapes) whenever I could, and my parents asked a few times if I was believing this stuff, or what, and after I convinced them that I simply found him fascinating, they chalked it up to one of my weird niche hobbies. Thank you for covering him! It’s amazing to me how GWT just slipped away into obscurity; he was the kind of person who I would have thought would keep turning up like a bad penny for the entirety of my life.
I have a foggy memory from when I was a kid. The first time I saw Amway, I recall telling someone that detergent was already sold in stores. I've never seen it in my friends houses, and it would have to be everywhere for people to make money. I'm pretty sure that person was my mother
My sister's husband tried to "better his best" when they first got married. He could never talk anybody into joining under him. They even made me go to a meeting once. I was, like, 15, and bored stupid.
Just stumbled upon this video. Clear, concise information about an interesting subject without a bunch of over edited fluff. Thank you for the excellent work, I look forward to browsing the entirety of your video catalog.
Man, it sure is awesome that you're seeing success practicing honest-to-god History without turning it "pop" or dumbing it down (that much). This subject especially is important with the manosphere being so prominent among boys and young men, it's pretty crazy that they've gone from hucksters like this, to motivational speakers like Tony Robbins in the '80s and '90s charging you to come see him speak, to Andrew Tate-style gurus simply selling online zoom meetings for the same price as an actual event. There really is a sucker born every minute.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video on the Crimean War!!!! It's kinda like WW0 and it really doesn't get talked about much. I went to public school and not once was the Crimean War ever mentioned and in any social studies classes
I clicked on this video because the tile sounds exactly like the plot of the Apple TV show I watched with Billy Crudup called "Hello Tomorrow". Great video!
YAY!!!! I'm strapping myself in for this...with the big red straps! This documentary is going to...DARE TO BE GREAT! And it *is* great! Thanks for filling in the many gaps in my knowledge about the Glenn Turner phenomenon. In the mid-'80s I found his LPs YOU CAN BETTER YOUR BEST and DARE TO BE GREAT! along with several loose audiocassettes, but solid information was scant in the pre-internet era and the few random news reports and magazine articles I read didn't flesh out the story for me...till this. I wonder if mail fraud is a Florida Man pursuit--cheesy film producer Herschell Gordon Lewis did prison time for it in the '70s.
Awesome a new 2h video! Making my weekend that much better. Super glad I caught this early! Its awesome to see your channel growing since you are one of my favorite history youtubers.
Common theme as to why mlms are spreading like cancer seems to be: 1. People want to earn without working much (it doesn't help that the current economy and society glamorize jobs where you have "potential" to earn far more than the effort you put in) 2. People have grown comfortable being consumers of material goods and expensive experiences and that fuels the drive to try their "luck" in those types of jobs - its all basically gambling
Great episode Sean. Some stylistic feedback, I wasn't a big fan of the AI portraits used as placeholders when a real picture of a person wasn't available. Thanks and keep up the great work
I would like to add that the cartoony rocket was a bit jarring after all the real-life footage, which I really enjoyed. I listened to the rest of the video like a podcast, so not sure if there were more cartoony looking snippets.
OHHH YESSSSS LETS GOOOOO I genuinely get excited each time a see a new upload, I swear to god you could make these forever and I would watch every single one HOW CAN YOU MAKE THESE ONCE A MONTH??? I follow so many video essay changes that do stuff in a similar vein, and it can take them Half a year to put out something of this length and quality, Are these young UA-camrs just lazy? Do you just have the work ethic on lock? This is probably the best new YT channel I have discovered in the past 2 or 3 years I’m a history NERD, but you always manage to find some crazy interesting, relatively obscure topic to do ridiculous deep dives into Congrats on 100k, it happened fast, here’s to another, or maybe even 2 before the end of the year!
Thanks! I wouldn't call anyone else on UA-cam lazy, as getting a viable channel going is a huge amount of work. I don't have any secret, really. I just plan out what I want to do, research it, and make it as good as I can, and I work diligently at a video until it's done. Maybe someday I'll do a video about my process.
I initially subscribed after binging some of your presidential videos but I truly love and appreciate everything you put out. Between you and a couple of other channels, I was encouraged to add a history minor to my studies!
Another fascinating film, Sean. I'm definitely now going to make the effort to get hold of your fiction as well. This one was totally unknown to me apart from, I might add, things that I've seen in your other films. And this is from the person who put together the thousands of readings in the "Disinformation Collection"!
I love your videos, and have been binging on them during the last couple of months. They are essentially a master class in critical thinking. Well done!

Sadly there would be massive pushback from the modern MLM lobby if any curriculum tried to implement this.

youtube rookie of the year is back
Oh. My.
Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers! I’ve learned so much I never really knew about from this channel.
I love and appreciate what you are doing for people who LIVE for each and every minuet detail involved in a story. Thank you Sean.
Just stumbled upon this video. Clear, concise information about an interesting subject without a bunch of over edited fluff. Thank you for the excellent work, I look forward to browsing the entirety of your video catalog.
Really impressed by the amount of work that goes into these. Just looked over and saw that the counter is at 100k. Congrats.
The depth of your discourse more than compensates for the length of the presentations. Keep it up! Thanks
As an American of Russian 🇷🇺 descent I approve and appreciate this comment!
Salut
It really isn't like WW0 as it's not considered a precursor to WW1.
Wooooo 100k Subs. Congratulations! Keep up the long format videos! I love them!
In my opinion, a developed nation intelligence can be measured by MLM popularity, also countries governance qualities by MLM regulations.
I clicked on this video because the tile sounds exactly like the plot of the Apple TV show I watched with Billy Crudup called "Hello Tomorrow". Great video!
Definitely one of the most informative, creative, and original channels on UA-cam. Keep up the Magnificent work Sean!
I wish I could consume hours and hours of your style of content. Youve inspired me to start reading again!
Common theme as to why mlms are spreading like cancer seems to be:
1. People want to earn without working much (it doesn't help that the current economy and society glamorize jobs where you have "potential" to earn far more than the effort you put in)
Another ANTI MLM Video from Sean Munger I am so excited about this. Sean Munger is the Greatest Anti MLMER on UA-camr.
But he doesn't mention the 99.7% failure rate, how can that be?
I’ve never been this early before! Been waiting for this one! 😁
Its amazing how many other scams and crimes that Koscot touches . Its truly the Kevin Bacon of crime.
Babe wake up, new multi-hour Sean Munger video just dropped
I just discovered this channel and am now wondering what else did I miss out on?! What great content!!
Thank god i was recommended this video, this channel is a GEM im so happy you made this!! Thank you so much for your entertaining and amazing work!
New subscriber here!
Thanks for doing something right algorithm!
Great job once again Sean! Would love to see one on Carl Rehnborg and the origin of Amway. It's talked about in Ponzinomics but def deserves a video!
Thanks Marco!
OHHH YESSSSS LETS GOOOOO
I genuinely get excited each time a see a new upload, I swear to god you could make these forever
and I would watch every single one
HOW CAN YOU MAKE THESE ONCE A MONTH???
I follow so many video essay changes that do stuff in a similar vein, and it can take them Half a year to put out something of this length and quality,
Are these young UA-camrs just lazy?
Do you just have the work ethic on lock?
This is probably the best new YT channel I have discovered in the past 2 or 3 years
I’m a history NERD, but you always manage to find some crazy interesting, relatively obscure topic to do ridiculous deep dives into
Congrats on 100k, it happened fast, here’s to another, or maybe even 2 before the end of the year!
@@SeanMunger that would be wonderful. Great stuff.
Never heard of you before but this is such a thorough video, added a sub.
just bought a vr headset and am going to watch this on an imax sized screen. thanks sean!!!
You are hands down my favorite history teacher. I love the subjects you choose to talk about.
Oh yeah, one of my favorite long format creators dropped a new video. My Saturday night is made, thank you thank you!
Excellent and educational! Thank you so much! 👏👏👏👍🏻😊
Almost to 100k, well deserved!! So glad I found this channel and I appreciate the hard work.
You had me at interplanetary scams. Subscribed
Always happy to see an upload from you. Thanks for putting these super detailed videos on topics and people I never would have known about before.
Thank you Sean! For anyone interested in staying informed about current day MLMs, check out the link above and let us know if you have any questions.
I have a lot of MLM questions, how do I contact you?
I am truly impressed by your videos. The depth, the presentation, and the novelty of the subject matter make your channel top-notch. Well done!
I initially subscribed after binging some of your presidential videos but I truly love and appreciate everything you put out. Between you and a couple of other channels, I was encouraged to add a history minor to my studies!
Great day when your video drops! It’s always a well-researched and fascinating ride. 😊
Another fascinating film, Sean. I'm definitely now going to make the effort to get hold of your fiction as well. This one was totally unknown to me apart from, I might add, things that I've seen in your other films. And this is from the person who put together the thousands of readings in the "Disinformation Collection"!
Have you considered joining Nebula? Your channel would fit right in there.
I would love to join Nebula. Maybe with 100K subscribers I can finally get their attention!
Amazing, he was making 40 K/year selling sewing machines in the 60s.
The sky was the limit!
And yet he blew it.
Madoff probably learned from him.
Your JFK two part series was the best out on UA-cam. Have you done Franklin expedition yet?
Trump Clone. A friend sold the makeup, it made my skin burn and it got washed of pronto!
I love your videos, and have been binging on them during the last couple of months. They are essentially a master class in critical thinking. Well done!
Fascinating topic. I didn't know, this kind of thing existed so far back on such a big scale!
You are one of the best creators on UA-cam I have to say you are exemplary in your use of visuals your voice is so relaxing and interesting and your videos are just very well done I could not applaud you more
