A GS or GSX starting procedure is this simple. Making sure the fuel tap is on and there is fuel in the carby bowls. Open the choke ALL the way and no throttle, hit the electric starter it should fire straight away, if not, close the choke and try again, if it kicks great, then open the choke 1/2 way and start it again it will run, if not, you just flooded it, leave it for 20 seconds. 1/2 choke and hit the starter it will start. That awful knocking sound is you wrecking one or more of the exhaust valves, they desperately need adjustment, the shims are way out, running it like you are won't be doing it any good. Also the exhaust studs are notorious for coming loose, they can be replaced with a 7mm bolt which will stop the exhaust leak too.
Thank you. I never started one before. I like em......Quick enough & fast enough for me. Though Im sure i will grow accustomed to 5th feeling like I'm looking for 6th. It runs nice quick to 80, Just learning it. Fun bike....... Anything else I should take care of? It has 14k. Completely stock original. I was told the coils are a typical problem? Then I hear the bikes bullet proof. I'm hoping the latter. I'm keeping this one.
Hi Andrew. Thanks for your helpful comment. Regarding the valves knocking, how would you set that before you start the bike as the engine would be cold and I believe you have to set the valve clearances only after the engine is hot?
First, hook up the batteries positive to positive and negative to negative and you won't get that BIG SPARK we heard. Second, PUT SOME GAS IN THE TANK. Your gauge reads EMPTY. Third, put down the beer when working on machinery. Things tend to go along better when sober.
Oh, by the way be careful that the ignition wire lead near the drive sproket inside the side cover is in its fitting, they come loose and rub on the chain, meaning you will loose 1, 2 or all 4 ignition signals from the end of the crank...
I have a serious problem with this mate. I mean....FOSTER'S ???!?! It's Australian for: cheap nasty beer which no-one drinks. Pull yourself together man! :-) Oh...like the GS. You might find it runs better if you get all 4 cylinders firing......
I cringed the entire time I watched this video. first of all you are jumping a 6v motorcycle battery with a 12v car battery, terrible idea. also, USE THE CHOKE MAN
Hey thanks for the comment but most bikes since about 1975 have been 12 volts. So it's perfectly good to use a car battery. The reason it didn't start immediately was because I have not primed the carbs.
That's an awesome bike. Wow
great bike!, with a little love..
camchain tension..gasket leak.. carburetor running lean...and a valve adjustment, then this hopefully runs great!

This motorcycle won SO MANY endurance races...
Very nice start to a Fantastic project !!
Missing on a cylinder or 2...had same bike and ignition coils problematic after 4:1 exhaust installed.

I had 2 1978 GS 1000's. Sidecar and caféracer

Andrew Bounader they dont have a chain. They're shaft driven
@@howardrowlands8613 wrong!!!! chain driven you muppet
Thank you, I will CK that out too.......
Luv it
It's hard to find such bikes now.
Their nice....................
If you have the choke on full you're not supposed to give it any throttle while you crank it.

Well when you spend all your cash on bikes and bike parts, something has to give.
Fair point!
I have 2 GS1100Gs and 1 GSX1100 or GS1150ES as it was known in the US.
I have a successor of this one - GSX-1100G. And also the bike from my beloved 80s - 1983 Yamaha XJ-750.
londonboards I have an all original Blue GS1100G 1982 6500km
DID U GET IT TO START
why does it sound like a lawnmower?
so is that a big common air box / filter housing ?
Sry for the late reply. Yes,I think it's common. The bikes Are Nice.......Sound way nice....on a stock exhaust
That's an A prefix for the year.
The same malady that they all have. Clogged low speed jets and generaly just filthy gunked up carburetors.
connectors, carbs n shims = open road!!
I seen enough of this shim over the bucket thing
Nice bikes..........
Lol looks like some fuel might help, but still nice.
how many gs's have you got now?
The horn button isn't the start button....geesh.......lay off the fosters and fix it tomorrow mate.
your fuel line is close...
...damn....hahaha. had them moments
Bit of a nut ?
And no gas!......
CHOKE!!!!
Orrrrrr......first non start.
