  • Norman Varney describes four passive solutions to room modes for critical listening rooms.
Room modes, or standing waves, create nonlinear bass frequency response in small rooms, which cause poor fidelity in playback systems.

why not just dsp and solve all the bass problems ? I believe in acoustic treatment, but at some point it is so much easier and cheaper to fix the bass on digital level.

DSP doesn't sound that natural with large amplitude problems with low frequencies. If you have a low frequency that has a peak of let's say 10dB or higher, the best way to manage that is by treatment to get that 10dB+ peak, for example, down to a peak that's maybe only 3dB or less, then you can use DSP to fix that smaller problem. But I wouldn't recommend using DSP for large peaks in low frequencies…. I"ve talked to many acoustic engineers that they agree……. So, if you're low frequency problem is over 3dB, then get treatment.
Also, the best low frequency absorption method is diaphragmatic. It's far better than membrane or Helmholtz. But for treatment of Axial modes, you need to fair amount of surface coverage on the surfaces where that specific frequency or frequencies are located. Depending the room dimensions, you can have a small number of frequencies or a large number of frequencies that are give you the problem. But definitely, treat the lowest frequencies first before you address the rest.
There are companies that sell pre-built diaphragmatic absorbers that can do down to 30hz, OR you can build them into the walls and ceilings OR you can buy a build plan to make your own, so you can save money.

@@Oneness100 wow you are clueless :D. sometimes peaks and dips go 25db. Get a measuring mic and measure some rooms before talking non sense on the internet.

@@zergbong Whether it goes that high isn't the point. It's going to sound like crap compared to just using proper treatment..
I know people that have compared it because they build rooms for a living and they've done tests of DSP vs proper room treatment.
