Interesting that you say this. Many restaurants who have had a socialist policy of providing food without a fixed price have gone out of business. Socialism doesn’t work. Individual charity does.
lovely story - I know its only a story, but it bought me to tears - the gap between the "Haves" and the Have nots" in our cruel world just gets bigger every day. Thanks Terry
I'm glad you enjoyed the story! It's heartwarming to see how a simple act of kindness can make such a big difference in people's lives. John Carter's compassion and generosity are truly inspiring. I hope this story reminds us all to be mindful of those around us and to lend a helping hand whenever we can. Even small gestures can have a profound impact. Terry, I would love for you to share this story with your friends and family. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness and compassion. I'm sure they will be touched by John Carter's story as well. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Thank you so much for sharing this story. I truly believe there are many more stories like this that never make the daily news; only those stories with the opposite outcome. Many thanks to John and his example to us all, and many thanks to you for helping us see such a wonderful story.
04:15: John’s decision to create Haven Cares after seeing the community’s struggles shows his deep empathy and willingness to act beyond his role as a CEO.
I work in a Retirement Village and I am the Happiness Coordinator. My job is so heartwarming I get to spread cheers and smiles and make everyone feel special. I hand draw everyone's Birthday card and it includes all their favorite memories. I can't wait to go to work each day. I carry a big smile
I once went to a restaurant in my dirty work clothes and was searching my pockets for enough to buy a burger and was a bit short for money. The woman behind the counter reached in her pocket and made up the difference for the money I did not have. There are people in the world that have a care for others. I don't know who she was but the care for someone she did not know never leaves me. It happens.
God bless him. We need more people and CEO's like him. It's easy to donate a few dollars. It's extraordinary to help people out of a life of despair. "Feed a man a fish, he eats for one day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. *

I've known business people who did such things. When I was a kid, my mom was a widow with 5 kids and received help & gifts from a local business owner. Such things happen.
John Carter’s story is a powerful example of leadership grounded in empathy and action. His undercover visits and willingness to connect with those in need show a rare humility for someone in his position. By turning a personal encounter into a widespread initiative like Haven Cares, he not only addressed an immediate problem but created a sustainable solution that uplifts entire families. However, this story also sparks an important question: why does it often take personal experience or direct exposure to spark change? While John’s actions are commendable, they highlight the broader systemic issue of reliance on individual goodwill rather than collective responsibility to tackle poverty and inequality. John’s transformation of Haven Bites into a force for good is inspiring and sets an example for other businesses. But it challenges us to consider: what if every CEO embraced their power to drive such meaningful change? The true measure of success isn’t just profit-it’s the impact you leave on the community.
NONE of the fast food restaurants here in the Memphis, TN area have employees, managers, etc that exhibit any kind of caring for the customer that this gentleman expects from his employees. Hopefully he can maintain that amount customer caring going forward.
As a young kid, with an older sister and one younger, we lived in a VW van while my dad was in Terminal Island. My mom did odd jobs, cleaning houses, picking berries, making sandwiches at a butcher counter.....I don't remember exactly where we were but hadn't eaten in a couple of days. We were waiting for a Western Union from our grandmother. Finally, she said " Fuck it " and took us into a Bob's Big Boy and said order whatever you want! I remember it was the best cheeseburger, fries, salad with Bleu cheese dressing and a coke I'd even had! After we finished eating, she went up to the cashier and asked to speak with the manager! She told him she couldn't pay but would work or give him the keys to the VW van until the Western Union arrived. He couldn't believe what he just heard! He accepted the keys until the wire arrived! True story! 😮
Great story. Especially during the holidays, it is a great feeling to help others. We always participate in toy and food drives, and it is very gratifying to know that when everyone gives a little, it helps a lot of people. Merry Christmas!
I truly honestly sincerely wish everyone had a time in their life when they had no food a time in their life when they had no hope a time in their life when they had no money and I hope that when they remember that time it made them wanna do something for someone else because I remember that time I remember when people helped me when they cared about me when they wanted me to do better I never forgot and I still to this day. Remember the kindness people show me and I try very hard to always be kind to those in need whether it be a ride down the road for a mother with two children trying to get home with groceries or a homeless person looking for pots and pans at my garage sale and going home with everything they could possibly need for free it matters everything you do matters
I try to do a little by donating to our local food pantry and donating to various GoFundMe requests. It's not enough. We should all try, if we can, to help in any small way.
Awesome story. People don’t realize how many hungry children there are here in America. People who need jobs that pay enough to pay the bills and buy food. Hopefully that will change soon.
"I can't change the world. I can't change most of the bad things that happen. What I can do is try to make things better for 1 person, 1 family, at a time. And if I invite my friends and neighbors we can help more folks more often." I'm not sure where I heard that, some 60 years ago, but it's stuck with me. We need less of "there's your problem" and more "how can I help"?
True story or not, the message was clear. A child should NEVER go hungry, ware torn clothing & hand-me-down shoes from friends. I've been there & in some small way, given back, without being known. It hurst to know it will never be enough, but you must try!
Thank you so much, Tom, for your insightful comment! I truly appreciate you understanding the message behind the video. It's heartbreaking to know that any child goes without basic necessities. I guess this is fiction, but pretend it's not. Folks, if you are working in a low-price business and a man comes in with a professional haircut and beard-trim like that in the photograph, be on the alert.
This video is very interesting in that John, being the CEO,of his many different restaurants decided to go undercover to one of his restaurants, because he came from a background of poverty and I remember when I was very young, my father told me about growing up during the GREAT DEPRESSION, where food and money were scarce and all most every night, he would cry, because he was starving, that's what this video reminds me of, as food is food, but the bottom line is that food is actually MONEY, when you think about it, and in this great nation of ours, you hear and see people asking for money to buy food, which actually makes me sick, and I completely stopped giving away FREE MONEY, primarily because I don't know them, maybe they take the money and buy DRUGS, that's what I think. And I don't bother further, just walk away, it's nothing new, OLD NEWS.
