  • A concept for how container ships should be designed to operate.
    Design Characteristics
    • The proposed concept consists of a deep-sea mother ship and numerous barges that are docked and undocked from the mother ship during the loading process.
    • The purpose of the barges is to hold the containers during the transportation from one destination to another.
    • The loading and unloading of the barges onto the mother ship is done using a loading dock at the rear of the ship.
    • The barges are exchanged during the unloading and loading process which eliminates the need for the mother ship to be in port during the loading of containers into the barges.
    • As the barges are unloaded, they become part of the wharf storage area for the containers they hold; the unloading of the containers from the barge can be done directly onto land transport.
    • The barges are designed to be operated remotely with the ability to return to port if lost at sea due to the loss of the mother ship.
