  • Aired Sunday 10:45 PM Feb 09, 1992. Colin travels light through Central Asia. And as always, his route and mind works in boy scout manner. Unfortunately I bumbled and caught it on tape after halfway. But the highlights are Colin driving at sunset and at night. The soundtrack and local songs are excellent. Especially on the train, in which Colin explains why he became a travel writer. Not to "escape" but "psychic restlessness". I only wish we could have seen what happened after he crossed the Amu Darya at the end. This is were Lord Bragg shines. (During the drive at dusk Colin said the death of his sister was the end of a happy childhood yet the cut scene at his London home chimes the recorded message from his sister which clearly was his adopted sister)

Glad you liked it. Quite amazing how very little of Colin's TV work is available. He is a really nice bloke as well

Colin Thubron did a brilliant documentary about Xinjiang in China in 1988. Beautiful observations, enlightening interviews and stories, stunning cinematography, and sights of a now largely lost world. Its called Great Journeys: the Silk Road. It used to be up on UA-cam but is now sadly not anywhere online.

Yes I have that documentary but it appears to be copyrighted and youtube wont allow an upload. The end scene where Colin trudges across Wakkan corridor, stepping across a stream to the end titles music, they wouldnt ever allow a small snippet to be uploaded. A rare few of us appreciate Colins tv work, thank you for watching!

@@birdanceThat's fantastic. I recorded it from TV onto VHS tape in the 90s but somehow it inevitably got taped over. Would you be open to sharing it ? I could provide an online private storage location where it could be uploaded. Can I contact you via the website in your bio?

I am amazed by the respectfulness and openenness that Colin Thubron shows in his travelling, in his arrival to places, in his way of addressing the people he encounters in his way. Along with his grave, profound voice, this makes his documentaries moving. He is a poet travelling; a poet of travelling too.

Yes but a lot of that is down to his background. It would be difficult for a person from an ordinary background to do what he does. He has the confidence of the upper class person. Nothing against him personally of course.

I was travelling last year around Kyrgyzstan. Then I came across Colin Thubron's books. Helped me to understand my own (difficult) experience of travelling to that part of the world! As much as understanding it is possible. The first opening sentence of this film is already so true...

It's good to know something I taped on TV and rare is useful to really good people. Colin's dusk drive is tour de force symphony, while others, funny because he is a gentle folk.

The book produced as a result of the travels depicted in this documentary (The Lost Heart of Asia) is probably my second favourite book of his. High praise indeed.
