As an artist I resonate with this so much. For years I have blamed myself for not getting in touch with my art practice daily but with time I have realized that I work in cycles. Just like you described it : diving in and out of work, in and out of the external world. It is like breathing, you have to inspire, get yourself inspired, in order to expire and get art out of yourself. I guess this applies to many subjects. Now I'm just trying to follow these natural impulses and make the best of them all !

It’s important to occasionally let your animalistic urges lead you over your intellectual logic, and to do so for the sheer ecstatic joy of its own sake, rather than with a specific end-goal in mind. Otherwise you might risk building up repressed energy and exploding it all out in an even messier way later in life. Getting in touch with your shadow is one of the most important things you can do. I’ve found my life has been much richer from both hiding myself away in my philosophy and postmodern book collection, and staying up for days in the hedonistic depths of humanity at places like Berghain. If you can gain a true appreciation for both of these sorts of experiences, you’ll have a much truer and deeper appreciation for the world and life in general as you grow older.

This reminds me something my professor said when talking about Plato's Republic, when Socrates said philosophers should be rulers he is not talking merely about the lover of wisdom who's in his room all day writing or reading other philosophers with theirs heads on the clouds, but those that have experienced life, that went into war as soldiers and participate in the political life of the City, and who then turned their attention to the pursuit of philosophy.

This is why I personally admire the works of Dostoyevsky so much. That men had been through hell before committing words to the page.

@@RCWaldun but isn’t that the art?! Showing the special life you have with prose? I think people can’t just live in books, because we can’t just take but also have to transmit our being to others

One of the reasons your channel is unique, I can feel the light in your manner and your words, makes me feel this small. That I need to do much more work than I do now. You are an inspiring figure Robin.

Agree! Both self-reflection and life experiences are important and we should carry on them simultaneously. Solely on A or B is limited that you are exposed to limited resources and the maps constructed in your mind is restricted!

I enjoy this video format because the rawness and continuity of the video resembles those actual, meaningful but rare conversations you get with old people. Unfortunately, I don’t get that often with friends and family. Funny how I only get to savor more of these meaningful, sensible & reflective talks in videos I stumble on different social media apps. But yes, I certainly need more of this “putting yourself out there” or “experiencing life as it is” than quietly indulging in my cerebral sphere so I could somehow find and attract people who also want the same thing to happen: to create meaningful and sensible conversations with actual people in their immediate community.

I needed this video so much, thanks a lot. I very much identify with being this artist and literate person, and recently it has just gone full overblown where i’ve spent every day at home investigating these pursuits, even staying home most of the weekends. What I actually has found, paradoxically, is that that has killed my passion for these pursuits. These flames that once burnt so high within me have started to get smaller and smaller and I think that’s exactly because i’ve lost touch with also actually living. I burnt myself out, thus killing what I love. This def explains why my love for my passions has decreased recent months, whereas when I was actually living ASWELL they flourished and i could feel that intense passion within me. It’s crucial to have a balance, to stay in touch with real life, both for creative pursuits and happiness!

About the work-life balance, I’ve found myself in an interesting dilemma, as I had been lost in overthinking little things that happened in my day to day life. However, going back to presenciality, working is the only way real things happen in my life, and I have chosen as many responsibilities as I could in order to be the most occupied I could be, all in order to let something interesting in my life happen.
Actually, this unbalanced situation, though called dangerous, is saving me, who knows for how long.

Found this vid at a timely moment. I spent the two big pandemic years in profound isolation, but immersed myself in a massive art project. By the end I had nearly 100 finished works of art, and was standing atop my magnum opus... but I was eager to keep working, hungry for the next challenge. Suddenly my inspiration kept falling through, my ideas thwarted or swept aside by obstacles, distractions, calamities... finally I had an epiphany, and it was exactly this. It was time to go out and meet Life again. I had poured my four decades of experience into my Big Project, and in a sense, had poured my own wellspring dry. Only the World, its sights and sounds, its places and people, can renew that fount. Slowly but surely, I am re-acclimating myself to the outside world, its hubbub and confusion, and my own inescapable awkwardness in it.
Very glad to have found this channel; although obviously geared to young students, its helping me transform a midlife crisis into an opportunity for finding new focus in personal and intellectual growth. Many thanks and keep up the excellent work.

I love your videos, they often calm me down about the future and life actually. I feel that you are showing this type of golden mean, it fits with this one's topic, finding this connection with artistic work and real life, and with your dreams and passion and the realistic, raw world. And you show how to seize from this life in our own way. I really take a lot from your work, thank you for that! And I'm also catching new words (as a non native speaker), i wish I could have someone like that as an English teacher :))

I find this applies to spiritual pursuits such as meditation too - in many meditation circles they may idolise the hermit lifestyle of meditating as on retreat. Jack Kornfield explores this in “After The Ecstasy, the Laundry”. But Jack Kerouac had the right idea too in “Dharma Bums” - embracing the world and getting out there on the road as a Bodhisattva ;)
I like the format, reminds me of UA-cam wandering on smaller videos of one take opinions or vlogs.

Thanks Tom! And I completely agree. Based on my limited knowledge of Eastern philosophy I think the principle way in which Zen differs from Buddhism is that Zen seeks to pursue a kind of monastic ideal while Buddhism thrusts people back into their direct sufferings/pleasures of life, and I really liked your insights on meditated related to this video.
Cheers man! And thank you for this comment. :)

I believe that this differentiation you pointed out at the end, of workaholic and hedonist, is kind of unnecesary and just makes it harder to understand what's that balance we are looking for. I prefer to put things even simpler, we are just people trying our best to be happy, and the humanities are not what we live for but , fundamentally, what make us live. To my view we might be assuming a slightly erroneous approach when discussing this topic.
Btw I saw someone ask you to turn on auto cc and I completely back the suggestion, as a non native speaker who is still learning, picking up words or expressions from educated persons like you happens quite frequently.
